Week 11/12 present some fascinating matchups! Look for great articles from Jeff Tsuruoka and Brian Leahy this week! Also, please get your all-star nominees in to me by January 24 at the latest. We're still working out a plan for next season's NSHL activity. Hopefully the league and players will make this a moot discussion, but I'm not optimistic. Lastly, my apologies for the late newsletter - I've had the flu since Tuesday morning, and I've been throwing up almost constantly since then. ************************************************************************** ALL-STAR NOMINEES NEEDED! The NSHL's annual celebration of the league's top players will kick off in about one month, and we need your input as to who deserves an invitation! By January 24, please submit to me six of your players for the annual all-star ballot. One player eligible to play at each position should be nominated, with left and right defense counting as separate positions. Preferably, the nominated players will have played primarily at those positions during the first half of the 2004-05 NSHL season. If you have any questions or comments about the process, please contact me. In addition, if you're interested in hosting the Ninth Annual NSHL All-Star Classic, please contact me immediately. ************************************************************************** WEEK NINE/TEN IN REVIEW: There are two new teams at the top of the Eastern and Western Conferences, and they got there on the strength of some impressive marks in Week 9/10. First, let's go to the Eastern Conference, where the St. Michael's Privateers moved past Quebec City with an undefeated 7-0-1 record. St. Michael's were paced by Brian Rolston in their move to the top, securing four big road wins. In fact, the Privateers' lone blemish was a home 2-2 draw with North Calgary. One of St. Michael's' big wins an impressive 2-0 win over the Houston Outlaws, which was the only defeat of the biweek for the new Western Conference leaders. Houston went 7-1 for Week 9/10, and now have scored 174 goals in forty games to lead the league. There's another divisional leader who climbed over their colleagues, and the Fort Garry Fiddler Crabs hope to stay there. An undefeated 6-0-2 record puts the Crabs two points over the Hawks and four points over the Rainiers. Also entering the fray in the league's most competitive division are Bill Scott's San Francisco Hedgehogs who went 5-1-2 to move into the conference's seventh Farley Cup spot. Jeff Tsuruoka did his part over Week 9/10 to stimulate the league's economy. Seven trades were conducted over the holidays, with the Brooklyn Fourteenth taking part in each of them. As the Fourteenth continue to look towards the future, the biggest name changing hands was power forward Mike Grier, who headed to Winnipeg with hot prospect Kris Beech going eastward. ************************************************************************** TRADEWINDS TEAR THROUGH BROOKLYN by Jeff Tsuruoka, Brooklyn owner During a season in which most team owners are clutching their players and draft picks for dear life Brooklyn owner/GM/coach Jeff Tsuruoka decided to buck the trend, making several deals this biweek. Team captain Mike Grier was a casualty of the rebuilding process, traded to Fort Garry for prospect Kris Beech and a 2nd round draft pick. "We're sorry to see Mike go," said Tsuruoka, "but we had a chance to pick up a kid like Beech and we took it. We have to look towards future seasons at this point. Mike will be missed terribly, but he'll get the chance to go deep in the playoffs with Mo's club and we wish him well." Grier did not seem surprised to be on the move. "When you're pushing 30 on a team that's clearly thinking about tomorrow you have to be ready to go at any time. I'll miss the guys here. They'll be fine. There's a lot of character in that locker room." Also on the move is goaltender Garth Snow, sent to St. Michaels in a deal for young forward Boyd Gordon that involved a swap of first round picks. "Yeah, we gave up a chance at a very high pick," said Tsuruoka. "Frankly, we haven't had a whole lot of success with high picks as an organization, and Boyd was out there. He's a kid we know, we love his game. He's tough, smart, and at 20 is already a responsible defensive player. Forwards Niklas Hagman and Erik Nickulas, acquired from Minneapolis and Quebec respectively, will be stepping right into a young Fourteenth lineup. "We like the grit these guys bring to the rink," said Tsuruoka. "They're battlers, and that's what we need right now." Finally, Brooklyn acquired some blue line depth by trading for Aki Berg. Forward Trent Whitfield went to Pittsburgh in return. SEEN AND HEARD AT KONSTANTINOV HALL - During a January 10th game against the Seattle Raineers somebody switched the video and audio of a Chris Simon highlight reel shown during a break in play. The video spot - which usually features big hits and goals involving Simon played over Anthrax's song "I Am the Law" - featured a montage of candid snapshots played over Elvis Presley's "Hunk of Burnin' Love". The team was remarkably tight-lipped about the identity of the prankster, though one source assured this reporter than Steve Ott had absolutely nothing to do with it. ************************************************************************** COUGARS BACK ON TRACK WITH SOLID PLAY by Brian Leahy, Capital City owner (AP) LINCOLN, NEBRASKA...Fortunes appear to be turning around for Capital City after the team posted their first winning bi-week since the opening set of games in Weeks 1 and 2, when the Cougars collected 5 wins and 3 losses. Weeks 9 and 10 saw Capital City finish with 5 wins, 2 losses and 1 tie. The two losses came in a 1-0 nailbiter at home against Lyndonville and a 4-3 defeat on the road at St.Michael's. "I think our lines are finally starting to gel and our defensive corps are working better," said Cougars coach Brian Leahy. "Plus, the defense is really starting to help cut down the amount of quality shots our goalies have to face." Goaltenders Ed Belfour and Manny Legace have had a tough time for most of the season so far. Both have had trouble finding rhythm and consistency and, because of that, both are being given the opportunity for their share of game starts. This past bi-week, each netminder started 4 games. Belfour finished 3-1, while Legace tallied a 2-1-1 record. MILESTONES Milan Bartovic, rookie winger taken in the 2nd round (39th overall) in the 2004 NSHL Draft, played in his first NSHL game this past bi-week. With an injury keeping fellow winger Luc Robitaille out at home against the Florida Hellcats, Bartovic was inserted as the 3rd line left winger and scored his first goal on his first shot (and only shot thus far) during his second shift. Slava Kozlov and Adrian Aucoin assisted on the tally. With Robitaille returning to the lineup, no word from the team on whether Bartovic will see action in the upcoming bi-week. Also notching his first NSHL goal was Joffrey Lupul. Lupul, another 2004 NSHL Draft pick (1st round, 15th overall), scored his goal on the road at Buffalo and opened the scoring during a 4-3 victory over the Bulldogs. In 24 games so far this season, Lupul has a goal and an assist. NOTEBOOK Veteran winger Luc Robitaille, in his sixth year of captaincy for the Cougars, is still leading by example. He's currently 4th on the team in points with 29 points in 38 games and tied for 2nd on the team in goals with 12. Of his 12 goals thus far, 3 have been game winners and he has scored both of the teams game tying goals. ************************************************************************** WEEK NINE/TEN RESULTS: North Calgary 0, at Brooklyn 2 BRK Olaf Kolzig - In their climb to the top of the Northwest, the Crabs were paced by their first-line pivotman, Joe Thornton. Thornton had at least one point in all eight of Fort Garry's Week 9/10 games, including multi-point games in seven of the eight! In the end, Joe finished with four goals and fifteen assists against some very tough competition, earning the Player of the Week award in decisive fashion. +/- SOG G A PIM PP SH FO-W AC IT TA HIT SP AS 12/23 vs FLO 2 0 0 3 0 0 0 9-6 36 21:51 0 0 0 2 12/28 vs NCH 2 5 1 3 4 1 0 12-7 37 20:31 0 1 1 2 12/30 vs LYN 0 6 1 1 4 0 0 8-5 43 25:31 0 0 1 1 01/02 vs LIB -1 1 0 1 0 0 0 7-3 34 19:13 1 2 1 1 01/03 at SHS 1 4 0 0 4 0 0 0-0 44 26:16 2 3 1 1 01/05 at LYN -1 2 1 1 2 1 0 12-7 38 21:55 0 0 1 1 01/06 at BRK 3 4 1 3 2 0 0 13-6 45 24:25 0 0 1 1 01/09 at CGC 2 2 0 3 2 0 0 13-7 43 24:32 1 0 0 1 Other top performances came from Thornton's teammate Marian Hossa, Privateers Scott Walker and Brian Rolston, Capital City's Slava Kozlov, and the Sasquatch's Kevyn Adams. DiPietro only played in the Sasquatch's road games, but look at the results!
