The Berserkers were only in danger once, in a 4-3 overtime win in Corner Creek, but Steve Rucchin saved the day with a marker in the extra frame. The surge moves the Berserkers up two spots to #6 in the Norris Power Index, second in their conference only to the Quebec City Patriotes. The Patriotes also had a stellar biweek, going 6-1-1 to move into the lead in the Atlantic (wins tiebreaker over St. Michael's). The Privateers won the head-to-head matchup by a 3-1 count, however. The two divisional heavyweights do not meet again until mid-March, when they play twice in a four-day span. Behind the play of two-way star Kris Draper, the Corner Creek Green Calves made a move in the East this biweek, winning six of their eight contests to settle into the conference's fifth playoff seed for the time being. In Topeka's game in Hampton Roads on January 18, the Scarecrows scored eight goals. That's not particularly surprising, since Topeka scores a lot of goals. What *was* unusual was that star center Joe Sakic figured in all eight of the Scarecrow tallies, with two goals and six assists! Wow! ************************************************************************** BONDRA UNVEILED TO BE A SASQUATCH by Scott Shigemi, Seattle Sasquatch owner Seattle, WA (AP) - In an effort to solidify themselves as playoff contenders, the Seattle Sasquatch announced today a deal with the Brooklyn Fourteenth. At the beginning of the season, Seattle acquired Kevyn Adams from the Fourteenth. This time they get a more legitimate goal scorer in Peter Bondra. "It was news to me," responded the veteran forward. "I knew they put my name out there, but never did I imagine that I'd wind up on the other side of the U.S." Seattle's offense has been dreadful for the past two seasons. Since trading away all-star Alexei Yashin, the Sasquatch has ranked among the lowest goal scoring teams in the NSHL. This season has seen their left wing scoring drop to a season high of nine goals. Kevyn Adams who has played in 42 out of 44 games is Seattle's top left wing. The Sasquatch hopes that Bondra will re-ignite their lackluster offense, providing David Vyborny a playmate. "We looked at our roster and determined that additional offense was required if we are to lock down one of the playoff spots," General Mananger, Ken Dryden said. "Bondra provides us with an additional scoring threat and some veteran leadership. With some of our developing talent and his presence, we should be able to make a strong push to the finish line." Moving in the opposite direction, Brooklyn receives one of Europe's up and coming prospects in Pavel Vorobiev and a draft pick (BRK05#2). Vorobiev was ranked tops in the 2000 NHL entry draft. He brings what scouts deem to be the "complete package." The draft pick was previously acquired in the Kevyn Adams trade when Seattle sent Jiri Hudler and David Tanabe to Brooklyn. ************************************************************************** BONDRA HEADS WEST by Jeff Tsuruoka, Brooklyn owner Brooklyn, NY - The latest victim of the Brooklyn Fourteenth's rebuilding is the franchises all time leading scorer and a shoe-in for an eventual NSHL Hall of Fame. Peter Bondra was traded to the Seattle Sasquatch. In return the Fourteenth re-acquired their own second round draft pick and also got the very highly regarded prospect Pavel Vorobiev. "What it came down to," said team owner Jeff Tsuruoka, "was sitting down with Peter and discussing where the team was going and finding out what he wanted to do. He said that his preference was to stay in Brooklyn, but that if I could find a fair deal for him - and he didn't have to go anywhere he didn't want to go - that he'd be all right with it. Seattle was on his short list of cities. We can't say enough about what Peter's meant to this team." Bondra received the news while at practice. "I'm sad to be leaving Brooklyn. I've accomplished so much here. It will be hard getting used to playing anywhere else. I will play my hardest for Seattle, but I will always be in Brooklyn." ************************************************************************** RAFALSKI THE MISSING PIECE? Faced with a potentially dangerous injury situation, the Seattle Rainiers took a gamble and hopefully picked up the piece of the puzzle that will allow them to successfully defend their Farley Cup title. The Fort Garry Fiddler Crabs sent blueliner Brian Rafalski to the Emerald City, where he will join Ed Jovanovski and Nick Boynton to form a solid trio. "With the number of players we have banged up back there, it was a no-brainer," according to Seattle GM Doug Norris. "In particular, [Jovanovski] and [Spacek] are both out two-to-four weeks, and with the competitiveness at the top of our division, we can't afford to sit back for that length of time." Rafalski could be the all-star defenseman that the Rainiers have coveted ever since the decline and trade of Eric Desjardins a few years back. Local hockey pundits believe that he is the best puckmoving blueliner in Rainier history, which isn't difficult when the other contenders include Jovanovski, Desjardins and the immortal Steve Duchesne. Said Norris: "Brian will give us a new dimension to our attack. We've always had the forwards that can put the puck in the back of the net - now we'll have one more way to get it to them. And Brian's a lot more responsible defensively than people give him credit for." The Rainiers had to give up one of their prize prospects in return for Rafalski, in portsider Oleg Saprykin. The former Thunderbird had been in and out of the Seattle lineup, and was recently relegated to the press box in favour of veteran Brian Savage. But the coaching staff still has high hopes for the Russian. "Oleg's going to have a long career in this league," said Norris. "He's a guy that you don't want to trade, especially within your division. We wish him well, and we'd love to have him back in Seattle someday." ************************************************************************** WEEK ELEVEN/TWELVE RESULTS: Capital City 1, at Brooklyn 1 (OT) CCC Ed Belfour - Super Joe does it again for the Scarecrows, whose fans are used to his heroics by now. Sakic recorded five multiple-point games in Week 11/12, of course being paced by his eight-point, plus-six performance in Virginia on January 18. For the biweek, Sakic totalled eight goals and twelve assists! +/- SOG G A PIM PP SH FO-W AC IT TA HIT SP AS 1/12 vs. Buffalo 0 4 1 1 0 0 0 12-8 46 25:38 2 1 0 3 1/14 at Long Island -1 2 0 1 0 0 0 11-7 38 21:25 0 0 0 1 1/16 vs. Pittsburgh 1 5 1 1 0 0 0 11-5 37 19:55 1 0 0 3 1/17 vs. Capital City 1 6 0 1 0 0 0 12-7 42 22:47 0 0 0 2 1/18 at Hampton Roads 6 5 2 6 0 0 0 18-11 48 26:52 0 0 1 3 1/20 at Minneapolis 0 5 1 0 0 1 0 14-9 47 26:05 1 0 0 2 1/22 vs. Houston -1 7 1 2 0 1 0 10-7 35 19:35 1 0 1 3 1/24 at Houston 0 4 2 0 2 1 0 16-6 45 24:59 1 1 0 2 Long Island's Zigmind Palffy, Montreal's Mark Recchi and St. Michael's Scott Walker also carried the load for their respective clubs this biweek. ************************************************************************** GOALTENDER OF THE WEEK SHS Marc Denis. It's tough toiling for a team in the Eastern Conference's basement, but Denis has performed quite admirably in the face of nightly danger. Week 11/12 saw Denis raise his game to another level, though. Facing thirty-six or more shots in each contest, Denis held the fort and gave his team a chance in all seven games.
