Special thanks to Scott for an article to add some flavour. If you can still get your computer managers out with due diligence, I'd appreciate it. I'll have an official league plan to present for next (2005-06 NSHL) season, most likely by the weekend. Sadly, it's really looking like the league (NHL) will force us to have to use it. Lotta injuries this biweek. Wow. Be careful out there, folks! Finally, the league files are up and available at the usual locations. Enjoy! Special note for Rob: the league files are up and available at the usual locations. Enjoy! ************************************************************************** TWO BIG TRADES! Two large-scope trades this past biweek in the NSHL, one of which featuring two of the league's top players while the other moves an up-and-coming youngster. The North Calgary Hawks traded original franchise member Martin Brodeur today, to Pittsburgh in exchange for top forward Pavel Demitra. Brodeur, who had been a member of the Hawks organization since the then-Toronto club moved to the NSHL in the summer of 1997, had fallen out of favour in lieu of Finn Miikka Kiprusoff. In Pittsburgh, he'll get the chance to regain his number-one spot if he can hold off incumbent Curtis Joseph. The fate of Tommy Salo - who has struggled of late with the Sound Chasers - is still up in the air. Meanwhile, Demitra should add to the North Calgary stable of top forwards as they battle for positioning with Fort Garry and the Seattle Rainiers. Nikolai Zherdev, the second overall selection in last summer's entry draft, was also dealt today, but he won't even have to change apartments if he doesn't want to. The young Russian went cross town from the New York Lancers to the Brooklyn Fourteenth, in exchange for two draft choices and pivot Kris Beech. Zherdev was fitting in nicely with Erik Cole on the Lancers' top line, but now will work his magic on the rebuilding Fourteenth. ************************************************************************** ALL-STAR STARTERS AND COACHES ANNOUNCED: The NSHL's Ninth Annual All-Star Classic will be held in picturesque Denver, Colorado this upcoming week. Said the Commish: "If and when we decide to expand again, Denver's a place we are highly considering. They've got a great fan base and we're excited to bring this event to the Pepsi Center." Coaching the Eastern Conference's all stars will be Quebec City owner Jean-Francois Boutet, who has paced his long-time struggling squad to first overall in the conference with a 36-14-4-2 mark. At least two of Boutet's charges will be joining him in Denver, with right wing Bill Guerin and defenseman Sean Hill being voted to the starting lineup. "It's a real honour," according to Hill. In goal for the East will be Lyndonville's Robert Esche, while the other defenseman will be Corner Creek's Bryan Berard. Joining Guerin up front are two players at opposite ends of the geriatric spectrum - Buffalo youngster Ilya Kovalchuk, and Manayunk's ageless wonder Mark Messier. Goodman's Outlaws have already amassed eighty-four points on the strength of a 39-11-5-1 record. Goodman will take at least one of his Outlaws to the All-Star Classic, as Chris Pronger will line up yet again on the blueline. Pronger will pair with Capital City's Adrian Aucoin. The starting front line will consist of Pittsburgh's Keith Tkachuk, Topeka's Joe Sakic and San Francisco's Martin St. Louis. In goal, possibly the least-surprising starting player, is the Fort Garry Fiddler Crabs' Roberto Luongo, who already has nine shutouts to his name. Houston is at the forefront of teams that could clinch postseason berths in the upcoming biweek, with a magic number of just nineteen. On the other hand, the Minneapolis Massasauga are almost certain of bowing out of the playoff derby within the next two weeks (tragic number of fourteen). Look out West, as the Northwest Division's top three teams all earned at least thirteen points out of a possible sixteen. Fort Garry paced the way with fourteen to move into a divisional tie with the Seattle Rainiers, but the North Calgary Hawks stay perched just one point back. ************************************************************************** SEATTLE - PRO OR ANTTI LAAKSONEN? by Scott Shigemi, Seattle Sasquatch owner Seattle, WA (AP) - Until recently, Antti Laaksonen had been one of Seattle's primary defensive specialists. He lost his job to Kevyn Adams at the beginning of the season and now it seems that he's become completely replaceable as it was announced that he would now play for the Topeka Tarantulas. The deal announced to the press involves Mariusz Czerkawski returning to Seattle from Topeka for Antti Laaksonen. As is the case with many players, the Sasquatch were pro-Laaksonen when they drafted the checking wing back in 2000. It took him a year of toiling in the minors before he was given a permanent roster spot, but once began playing; he quickly found a home matched up against the best offensive players Seattle's opponents could dish out. Laaksonen is dependable in his own zone, while at the same time he can find a few sparks of offense that many role-players enjoy. "I've had four fine seasons in Seattle," Laaksonen said. "Since expansion, the team has struggled and is starting to get back on its feet. I'm just sad that I will not be part of it. But to be given another chance at playing along side Steve Yzerman, I'll be sure to make myself useful and play my best." During Laaksonen's breakout season, Mariusz Czerkawski had his second best season. The year Seattle drafted Laaksonen; Czerkawski hit a career high in goals and points (42 and 79). The 42 goals stand as the all-time team high. He came within one point of matching the 79-point total the following year, but his goal production tailed off by nine. Following those two outstanding seasons, his numbers fell off dramatically, returning to levels he produced when the team was in Detroit. As a result, he was traded to Topeka in a not so brilliant deal (from the Seattle point of view) with Steve Yzerman for Radek Dvorak and Janne Laukanen. "Getting a second chance is what any professional athlete dreams about," responded Czerkawski to the news that he was returning to Seattle. "This is what I'm getting and I hope to make the best out it." First glance at how the two players will help their new teams, Antti Laaksonen probably will not get his wish to play on Steve Yzerman's line. Instead it's believed that he will hold down the left wing spot that Mariusz Czerkawski vacated on Topeka's third line. This provides the Tarantulas a fairly solid checking line with Laaksonen, Eric Belanger and Daniel Alfredsson. For Czerkawski, he may find playing time opposite any number of Sasquatch wings, none of which he has had any significant time playing with. But to see him crashing the net with playmaker and defensive conscious Radek Dvorak may be the pairing he needs to get back on the scoring track. It would be a fitting match since Dvorak was once part of the earlier Czerkawski deal. ************************************************************************** WEEK THIRTEEN/FOURTEEN RESULTS: Hampton Roads 2, at Brooklyn 6 BRK Brendan Witt -
