After two big deals in the last newsletter, the big one (in both quantity and quality) comes in this one. Both the Florida Hellcats and the Lyndonville Blades are finding themselves lower in the 2004-05 standings than they are accustomed, and Rob Ryan and Mark McNeil dropped the hammer on what could be the biggest trade of the year. Going to the Blades is star winger Glen Murray, who had struggled this season after consecutive seasons of 47 and 57 goals. Murray had been with the Hellcats for more than seven years and was instrumental in the team reaching the Farley Cup Finals last spring, but had recently engaged in a media war with Florida management. Lyndonville is also dealing a star-crossed forward of their own in right wing Todd Bertuzzi. A starter in last year's All-Star Game, Bertuzzi is coming off seasons of 47 and 53 goals, but was stuck on just eleven tallies after fifty-seven games. Both teams are hoping that a change of scenery is all that it will take in this case. Also changing hands are a pair of netminders hoping to escape the stigma of being backups. Dwayne Roloson heads north to Lyndonville after sharing time with Marty Turco in Florida - despite being named a Sawchuk Trophy finalist last year, the thirty-five year-old has never played in more than forty-three regular season contests. Can he take over the top spot in western New York? The Blades were willing to give up hot prospect Martin Prusek to find out. Also changing hands in the transaction were hard-luck winger Jeff Friesen and young defensemen David Hale and Christian Ehrhoff (all headed to Florida), and vet blueliner Sergei Zubov, whose seventy-eight postseason appearances rank third all-time in NSHL history. Florida also traded another long-timer this week, dealing Mike Modano to the conference-contending North Calgary Hawks in exchange for prospect winger Scott Barney and a draft choice. Modano had been with Florida for nearly eight years, and has played in the past three All-Star Games, but has just seven goals this season. ************************************************************************** ALL-STAR ROSTERS: Full All-Star rosters were selected by coaches Goodman and Boutet. Let the complaining begin - but remember, if you want to complain about a player not being selected, you have to also pick a player to be removed (keeping in mind that every team needs a rep). Have at it, citizens! The All-Star Game will be Saturday, February 26 in Denver, Colorado. St. Michael's had a pretty fine biweek, going 7-0-0-1 to move into a three-way tie for the top spot in the Eastern Conference. And it's a good thing for them that they did, since they were able to keep equally-hot (6-0-1-1) Montreal from catching them. Two scoreless ties?! Minneapolis has now been officially eliminated from Farley Cup contention. The next to go likely will be Vancouver, although the Whitecaps are technically still alive. On the positive side of the same coin, the Houston Outlaws' magic number for clinching a playoff berth is three. Any combination of Outlaw wins, Outlaw ties, Sasquatch losses and Sasquatch ties that total three points will put Houston into the playoffs. Can they do it with only eighteen games remaining? Time will tell! The distance between the top three in the Northwest doubled over the last biweek! That's right - from one point to two points, as North Calgary (86) has a slim lead over the Seattle Rainiers (85) and Fort Garry (84). Two scoreless ties?! Okay, it's time for "Do Your Own Joke", regarding the scoreless ties between Pittsburgh and Florida, and Manayunk and Quebec City. Make it better than this one: "What, did they forget to bring the pucks?" That shouldn't be hard. It's all in the delivery, though, so maybe you just didn't read it right. Try saying it out loud, for Pete's sake. ************************************************************************** COUGARS SEEK TO SOLIDIFY A POST-SEASON SPOT by Brian Leahy, Capital City owner (AP) LINCOLN, NEBRASKA.....The NSHL is currently at a point in the season where most teams are fairly certain of their fate. Either the team is out of the running for the playoffs or fading fast, and looking towards next season by making trades for the future and giving some veterans a chance to play for a contender or they're confident of their place in the playoffs and are gearing up for their drive to play in the Farley Cup. In the past few weeks, the Cougars have done as much as they can to not only gain a place in the playoffs, but to make sure they don't slide back to the point of being on the bubble and possibly losing out come season's end. Capital City is 10-1-1 in their last 12 games and 11-3-2 overall in the past two league bi-weeks. Coming from a team that historically did well at home, but either at or below .500 hockey on the road, their inspired play of late has certainly increased player morale all around. Currently, the Cougars are tied with the Pittsburgh Sound Chasers for 7th place in the Western Conference at 70 points each on the season thus far. Just one point ahead of them both are the San Francisco Hedgehogs. The Seattle Sasquatch sit 10 points behind Capital City, but with 18 games remaining in the season, being caught is still possible. Also, with the trade deadline looming at the end of the bi-week, Cougars management seems content with going to war with the group that took them this far. "Right now, we feel that if we took away any of the pieces of our puzzle, at this point it would jeopardize team chemistry," GM Brian Leahy said. "It's too far along into the season to bring in someone new, not enough time for a new player to the squad to gel with line mates and vice versa." ALL-STAR COUGARS Adrian Aucoin was named a starting defenseman for the Western Conference All-Stars and will pair with Houston's Chris Pronger on the blue line for the 9th annual mid-season classic. Eric Goodman, coach of the Houston Outlaws and selected to coach the Western Conference all-star team, has not yet announced the reserves to fill out the rest of the squad. Defenseman Paul Martin and forward Joffrey Lupul have been nominated by the Cougars coaching staff to play in the All-Star weekend's Rookie Game. Word should come shortly as to whether one or both will be selected by the league to participate. Martin has been mainly playing on the left side of the 2nd defensive line, alongside veteran Mathieu Schneider. Martin, the 20th overall pick in last September's entry draft, has notched 3 goals and 20 assists and played in every game so far this season. Lupul, also a first round pick at 15th overall last September, has found it a bit more difficult to crack the team's lineup on a regular basis, floating between the 3rd and 4th lines on the right wing and amassing just 5 goals, 6 assists and 11 points in 45 games this season. NEWS & NOTES Adrian Aucoin, currently with 19 goals, 45 assists and 64 points in 64 games so far this year, is aiming to become the first Capital City defenseman to finish the season as the team's top point-getter. Slava Kozlov is second on the team, 11 points behind with 18 goals and 35 assists in 53 games...Defenseman Mathieu Schneider potted 2 game-winning goals last bi-week, both coming on the road against Minneapolis and Manayunk. Jason Blake holds the team lead so far this season with 5 game-winners to his credit. ************************************************************************** WEEK FIFTEEN/SIXTEEN RESULTS: New York 1, at Brooklyn 3 BRK Nikolai Zherdev -
