During the week of March 21 through March 27, I'll first be in Tucson for Milliman's Health Forum, then I'll be in Phoenix to see my brand-new niece. Therefore... ...I'm declaring this a triweek (unless some brave soul wants to do all of the bookkeeping that I do while I'm gone). All game reports are due March 28 at the usual time. Week 21 will begin March 30, and end on April fifth. Some great articles by owners this biweek - make sure and check them out! ************************************************************************** TRADE DEADLINE PICKS UP IN THE LATE HOURS It seemed as if the 2005 NSHL trade deadline would come and go with not so much as a whimper. Most of the "big deals" had already been completed prior to Week 17/18. Then the Joe Nieuwendyk trade hit. Lyndonville owner Mark McNeil had been looking to get Nieuwendyk somewhere to play when it became evident that he didn't fit into the Blades' system. The Topeka Tarantulas, fighting for position in the crowded Western Conference, finally bit and acquired the star forward. Also moving teams today are Dave Andreychuk, who seeks the Farley Cup now with the Long Island Berserkers, and Dmitri Kalinin, whom Andy Bartalone traded his first-round pick to Topeka to acquire. One sad sidelight on trade deadline day is what looks to be the end of pivot Adam Oates' career. Oates was released by the Minneapolis Massasauga today, and unless picked up as an emergency replacement has probably played his final NSHL game. Happy trails to Adam! If over, Oates retires with 98 goals and 382 assists in 580 regular-season games for six NSHL franchises. If it's not over, then he'll add to that (duh). ************************************************************************** WEST SWEEPS ALL-STAR WEEKEND The Western Conference dominated action in the 2005 NSHL All-Star Weekend, held in picturesque Denver, Colorado over the weekend. First, the West's rookies stormed out to a four-goal lead over the East's first-years, then held on for a 6-3 win by scoring the last two goals of the game. "[The East] was getting pretty close there," said Niko Dimitrakos, "so we decided that we had to put it back into high gear at the end." Vancouver's Patrice Bergeron was named most valuable player of the rookie game with his two goals. In the main event, the West ripped East starter Robert Esche for four first-period tallies in a 6-2 win featuring a combined eighty-six shots on goal. Pittsburgh's Keith Tkachuk carried the day with two goals on the evening, while the West goaltenders of Roberto Luongo, Tomas Vokoun and Miikka Kiprusoff combined to stop forty shots and eight of nine Goalie Ratings. Perhaps most surprising was West captain Joe Sakic's double-minor for high-sticking early in the game. San Francisco's Michael Ryder continued his phenomenal freshman campaign by appearing in both the rookie game and the "official" All-Star Classic. When asked if, in his wildest dreams, he imagined that his NSHL career would start off as well as it did, he remarked that his "wildest dreams didn't include hockey." Ha ha, Mr. Ryder. ************************************************************************** PLEASE READ THIS And by "this", I mean this section, not the headline above (although you're free to read that as well). I've been asked to refresh people's memories about how to report games once played. (1) Attach the boxscore as a PLAIN TEXT ATTACHMENT. Here's a hint - open it before you hit "send" (in WordPad, or NotePad, or whatever) and see if the boxscore part (the part with all of the player stats in it) shows up properly, i.e. not split in half by an arbitrary line-length carriage return. (2) Attach the export file AS A ZIPPED ATTACHMENT. (3) If you'd like, attach the play-by-play file, etc. (4) If you'd like, place three stars of the game and/or game summaries, highlights, etc. in the body of the message. Those of you that do this, I appreciate it greatly because it adds to the flavour of the league. One thing - some of you have taken to adding these things to the boxscore attachment, which causes my analysis software to crash. Please either attach it as a separate text attachment, or in the body of the e-mail itself. (5) Send the result to nshlgroups@yahoogroups.com AND TO YOUR OPPONENT. The second part of that is important, and if I have to start IPing people that aren't paying attention, I will. Secondary notice - you don't need to add the Commissioner's address, or Brian's address, or Eric's address, or Dane Muramoto's address, or whatever, to the distribution list (unless they're your opponent). If we need to get the games results, then we're already subscribed to the list. Please let me know if these instructions aren't clear enough. ************************************************************************** WEEK SEVENTEEN/EIGHTEEN IN REVIEW: Someone must not have told the Houston Outlaws that they had clinched a playoff spot after Week 15/16 action, because the Outlaws were on fire this biweek, going a near-perfect 7-1 to raise their record to a mammoth 51-15-5-1, good for 108 points. In fact, with ten games remaining the Outlaws have a very good chance at eclipsing the league record of 121 points, set last year by Long Island. The bad news for the Outlaws? Their one loss came at the hands of the other division-leader in the conference, the Seattle Rainiers. The Rainiers and Outlaws have perhaps the league's longest rivalry, dating back to the days when the Outlaws were the West Coast Dopplegangers led by then-commissioner Richard Farley. Should the teams meet again, it could be the battle of the year in the NSHL. The Rainiers' first concern, though, is the rest of their division - specifically Fort Garry and North Calgary, each of whom sit just two points behind the Emerald City mountaineers in the Northwest standings. Although all three teams have guaranteed themselves a spot in the playoffs, it would behoove this trio to strive for the #2 spot in the conference, ahead of the equally-tough Topeka Tarantulas. Perhaps Houston's Farley Cup playoff invitation was mistakenly sent to the city by the bay? After a strong midyear performance put them within snorting difference of the division leaders, the San Francisco Hedgehogs turned tame in Week 17/18, dropping all eight of their contests by a combined score of 31 to 13. The Hedgehogs' performance has given hope to the Sasquatch, who looked all but dead in the water two weeks ago but are now just two points behind San Francisco with ten games to play. To answer your next question, the Sasquatch and Hedgehogs meet once in the league's final month - on March 14 at the Cow Palace. Expect blood. Speaking of teams falling by the wayside, last season's defending conference champion Florida Hellcats won just once over the past two weeks, and now sit six points out of a playoff spot in the relatively mild East. ************************************************************************** SPIDERS DEADLINE DEALS Topeka readies for playoffs with eye on the present/future Doug North, Topeka owner Even with a league lockout looming, the Tarantulas weren't about to stand pat. Topeka made a deadline deal to help solidify a run (final???) for the Farley Cup as well as a couple trades to help with rebuilding this aging squad. To help this year, Topeka acquired Joe Nieuwendyk and Marek Malik (and LYN #4). Topeka gave up it second round pick along with prospects Tomas Kloucek and Denis Arkhipov. "Joe will help us in a number of areas," said GM Doug North. "He's great on faceoffs and the power play. We can see him either playing center behind Sakic and Richards or playing LW on one of the first two lines. With Rem Murray hopefully back for the playoffs we will have four very solid lines. We hated giving up a second rounder but we plucked Kloucek off of the waiver wire and Arky hasn't progressed as well as we had hoped so this was a risk we were willing to take." Acquiring Malik ended up triggering an unexpected trade that was engineered just before the deadline as Topeka dealt Dmitri Kalinin to STM for BRK #1 pick. "Marek was acquired to be our sixth guy but he can handle playing on the second pair with Scott Stevens," said North. "Dmitri has done alot for us this year but when we found out we could get a top 10 pick in the next draft (whenever that is!!!!) we just couldn't pass that up. We have to have an eye toward the future........guys like Chelios, Stevens, Yzerman......they can't go on forever. We felt we had to this step or else this entire team is going to get OLD all at once." Following the deals, Jan Hlavac found himself on the outside looking in and he was dealt to BRK for LYN #3. "We wish him well but to be honest we don't wanna see BRK make the playoffs," North chuckled. "We'd LOVE a lottery pick!" ************************************************************************** THE FLORIDA HELLCATS: HEAVEN AND HELL by Robert Ryan, Florida owner Only a little less than one year ago today the Florida Hellcats were favored to win their first Farley Cup against the Seattle Rainiers. After compiling a franchise-best 53-19-8-2 record during the 2003-04 regular season it seemed like the only answer to the season would be a Cup win against Seattle. Mike Modano and Vaclav Prospal each scored over 100 points in the regular season and Glen Murray put in an incredible 57 goals. Robert Svehla had 55 assists and Sergei Zubov, 47. Shane Doan, Petr Sykora, Shawn Bates and Chris Gratton seemed to score at will. Dwayne Roloson and Marty Turco were the best one-two combo in the league. Oh, how far the mighty have fallen. Svehla and all-around forward Ulf Dahlen retired. Robert Reichel was shipped off. Jochen Hecht was added early in the year for Sykora just to balance the left side. The scoring was dreadful this year. Everyone, except Doan, were having off years. Way off. Something needed to be done. General manager Rob Ryan, swung into action. In probably the biggest trade of the year Murray, Zubov and Roloson were traded for Todd Bertuzzi, Jeff Friesen, David Hale, Christian Ehrhoff and goalie Martin Prusek. Then Mike Modano was shipped out for Scott Barney and a draft pick. The scoring is still way down and the goaltending has become average. One of the biggest losses for the franchise was the loss of intimidating defensemen. Svehla was one of the best along with Hal Gill. But this year it seems like the whole defense corps is afraid to take the body, Gill, Niclas Havelid and Nathan Dempsey included. So where does the franchise go from here? From time to time, I have had to "reset" the franchise and get it going in the right direction. This is one of the most trying times of the Hellcats. To go from 53 wins one year to less than 30 the next is quite a downfall. But the Hellcats have gotten younger. The left side has much youth and potential in Hecht, Prospal, and Friesen. The right side has Bertuzzi and Doan. Christian Backman is one of the up and coming defensemen in the league along with Lubomir Visnovsky and Dempsey. Gill, Hale, Havelid and Ehrhoff man the top seven spots on defense. The future of the franchise, however, lies in names such as Ray Emery, Brooks Laich, Noah Clarke, Brad Boyes, Brad Fast, Simon Gamache, Jason Williams, Allan Rourke, Jim Fahey and Chris Kunitz. These players will need to step up and be the future Doans, Murrays and Modanos of the club. I have retooled the Florida Hellcats and given them a more youthful glow. Whether it works remains to be seen. ************************************************************************** WEEK SEVENTEEN/EIGHTEEN RESULTS: Minneapolis 0, at Brooklyn 8 BRK Jeff Halpern - goal, three assists BRK Nikolai Zherdev -
