When you send your game results to the games list, YOU MUST ALSO SEND IT DIRECTLY TO ME, BRIAN AND YOUR OPPONENT. I hope that you and yours all have a most excellent holiday time, filled with family time, rest, relaxation and good times. Something to note is that you have three weeks (instead of two) in order to report your Week 11/12 results - they are due on Monday, January 8. Please re-read the preceding paragraph. Also to note is that I'll be in Port Orchard / Seattle / Sunnyside, Washington from the 21st through the 28th, and will be harder to reach. Please be patient. :-) Everyone please welcome our newest associate, Francois Lessard! Some excellent perspective articles from the owners of the Bullies and Sound; hopefully you enjoy them! I just ate five pork chops. ************************************************************************** PLEASE SUBMIT YOUR 2006-07 NSHL ALL-STAR NOMINEES: All-Star season is nearly upon us! The 2006-07 NSHL All-Star Game will be held in beautiful Minneapolis, Minnesota, and hosted by Mike Steudle. What I'd like from each of you are your nominees for the all-star ballot; one from each position on the ice (left wing, centre, right wing, left defense, right defense and goal). Ideally, your nominees would be players who played the noted position regularly, but do what you can. Nominees are due SUNDAY, January 7. Thanks! ************************************************************************** WEEK NINE/TEN IN REVIEW: The Brooklyn Fourteenth have jumped out to a large twelve-point divisional lead in the Northeast Division. How did they do it? By racking up fifteen out of a possible sixteen points over their Week 9/10 schedule, that's how! In fact, the only team to knock off the club - the Lancers - took had to go all the way to a shootout to do so. The Fourteenth credit Lemieux Trophy candidate Alexander Ovechkin for the surge; the young Russian is now the NSHL's goal-leader with thirty-seven. We now have a race in the Atlantic! The Privateers and Bullies are separated by a single point after a frantic biweek, but the surprise is the Montreal Wanderers. Montreal unloaded many of their top names over the offseason in an effort to retool; however, the Wanderers went 7-1 this week and would be in the playoffs if they were to start today! Nikolai Zherdev currently leads the club with 45 points in 35 games. Out West, four teams have gained a bit of separation from the rest of the pack - the North Calgary Hawks (60 points), the Seattle Rainiers (57), the Houston Outlaws (55) and the Fort Garry Fiddler Crabs (54). Although the Outlaws are the only team in that group from the Central, don't give them the division crown just yet. Chasing them - and only seven points back - are the feisty Capital City Cougars. Look for all of the clubs to attempt to improve their position with a transaction or two in the next few weeks. Right wing Daniel Alfredsson had a spectacular game on December 6th as a part of Capital City's 12-0 dismantling of Long Island. The Cougar had a nine-point night with three goals and six assists, and was plus-eight on the evening. Alfredsson's linemates Joe Sakic and Jason Blake both contributed and benefitted to/from the effort. Eric Lindros' season may be over. The North Calgary forward, who has been in and out of the lineup with a myriad of aches and pains, had to be carried from the ice on a stretcher after suffering a severe concussion against Nevada on the 14th. He regained consciousness en route to the hospital, but although he hopes to return this year, but Calgary doctors are painting a different picture. ************************************************************************** THE BULLIES AT THE HALFWAY POINT by Lee Yelshin, Manayunk owner In the October 4th Newsletter, Doug Norris presented a surprising scenario for a post-season that was 82 games away. At the time, I thought that since Doug is a mathematician, I'm sure he ran extensive, repetitive simulations of the season, using predicted skaters and linemates. He probably crunched the numbers from hours on end. Or, being a mathematician, his brain is often in an altered form of conciousness. His prediction of a second-place standing and a trip to the Cup final for the Bullies could have been the product of an extremely intense hallucination. Seriously, that was a level of performance well above my wildest expectations for the year. Sure, I had a pretty good Bully-like team. Most of the forwards shoot and pass about the same. I have more K passers and defense 4s than I think I've ever had, and most of my usual players will be around all season. The draft treated me well, with four acquisitions expected to play their full allotment of games. And the completion of a trade with Brooklyn gave me a second defense-heavy line. But was Doug completely off in another universe? Or is he sporting a extra-large pair of crystal balls? Around weeks 5/6 I was starting to believe the latter. After a 4-4-0 start, Manayunk went on a loss-less streak that surprised me. I had a 6-0-2 record for both 3/4 and 5/6, and the Bullies jumped to never-seen heights of the Farley Cup Playoff Watch and the Norris Power Index. And weeks 5/6 was a tough one, with all the teams within three points of mine. The next two biweeks brought me closer to reality, with a 4-2-2 and 3-4-1 bringing the team to 23-10-7 at the almost-halfway point. What about the second half of the season? The Bullies head out west for weeks 11/12 (west Pennsylvania, at least), with no in-conference opponents. Injuries could be an issue, especially against the conference-leading Hawks. But I think the outlook is good for some decent results. Thank you, Doug, for the vote of confidence, and I'll see what I can do to live up to the goal you've presented. ************************************************************************** VIEW FROM THE CLIFF: SOUND ANALYSIS by Chris Malitsky, Stone Harbor owner While the NSHL slowly winds into another Christmas season, Sound GM Chris Malitsky chuckles at what could have been. He still likes the makeup of his team, but wonders what his team would be like right now if injuries would be removed. He also has one name at the top of his head: Marian Hossa. Hossa becomes the enigma, but he was the price for the current heart and soul of the team in Bryan McCabe. Come to think of it, the core of the team was put together back in Malitsky's first week as GM of the team. Ryan Miller, Marc Denis, McCabe, Brendan Morrison, Mike Comrie, and Brad Stuart were all traded for in that first week. McCabe has given everything he can to carry the team on the ice and Morrison has been a very serviceable forward. But can McCabe's heart replace Hossa's firepower? That is a difficult question to answer, but the team has been struggling to find a sniper or a group of players to find the net in the absence of a true sniper. And Malitsky's plan could have been tested completely if players like Jason Allison, Steve Konowalchuk, and Josef Vasicek have stayed healthy and if Kyle Calder and Jamie Lundmark continued to developed as he had planned. Because the team has not been performing to the expectations of a playoff season, the GM has taken another redirection by trading off a decent chunk of his non-core players. The above list, coupled with newly acquired Pavel Datsyuk and Lee Stempniak as well as Vasicek were held on to, while a new flurry of trades to help playoff bound teams, have welcomed the arrival of young grinder Scottie Upshall and playmaker David Vyborny. But missing from the puzzle is still that sniper Malitsky covets. He sees teams with multiple snipers and sees their collective success. And he wonders when, if ever, he will get his chance to assemble enough talent to pull the franchise from the throes of the weak. Well, with a little change of misfortune and the help of two first, a second, and two third round draft picks next year, may help but in the meantime, there will be plenty of vodka flowing for the GM as he maintains his patience in hopes to bring McCabe a cup for all he has toiled for him on the ice. He also feels he has found his franchise goalie in Miller, and has some nice talent in his forward ranks, but he still lacks the scoring punch to bring the team to the next level. McCabe may be Malitsky's man, but the GM needs to bring him help as the team longs for a playoff showing and a quest for the Farley Cup. ************************************************************************** LEAGUE LEADERS THROUGH FORTY GAMES: GOALS: BRK Alexander Ovechkin, 37. generally I hold my players to a higher standard when it comes to player of the week honours, so they usually have to go "above and beyond the call of duty". Having said that, I present to you Jonathan Cheechoo. In his Week 9/10 games, Cheech scored eleven times and added twelve assists, putting forty-four shots on opponent goals and finishing plus-eight on the biweek. He'll need to continue if the Rainiers are to keep up with the rest of the conference powers. +/- SOG G A PIM PP SH FO-W AC IT TA HIT SP AS 12/06 vs STM 1 9 1 1 0 1 0 1-0 38 21:36 1 1 1 2 12/08 at FLO 1 4 1 2 2 0 0 0-0 35 18:27 0 0 1 1 12/10 at FGF 3 7 0 2 2 0 0 0-0 40 22:09 1 1 0 1 12/12 vs VAW 2 6 2 3 0 2 0 0-0 29 16:14 0 1 2 1 12/13 vs NEV 0 7 4 0 0 3 0 1-1 32 20:04 0 0 5 0 12/14 at SES 3 6 2 3 2 0 0 0-0 42 22:13 1 0 0 2 12/17 vs NCH -3 3 1 0 0 1 0 0-0 33 19:17 0 1 0 2 12/18 at VAW 1 2 0 1 0 0 0 0-0 51 29:10 1 0 1 0 Other solid biweeks came from Capital City's Daniel Alfredsson, the Hawks' Paul Kariya, Fort Garry's Joe Thornton and Montreal's Mark Recchi. One reason (Alex Ovechkin) was mentioned there, but it doesn't matter how many goals you score if you can't keep the puck out of your own net.
