The biggest by far saw the upstart Vancouver Whitecaps - in their first ever postseason series - knock off the powerful Houston Outlaws. Led by second-overall 2006 draft choice Sidney Crosby, the Whitecaps stormed out to a three-games-to-zero lead over Houston, only to find out that you need four games to advance in the Farley Cup playoffs. Houston won each of the next three games by multiple goals to earn the coveted Game Seven on home ice. It was then that the Houston gas tank fell empty, as the Outlaw gunners could not get past Kari Lehtonen (38 saves) in a 3-1 defeat. Crosby was named one of the game's three stars in the final three games of the series. The other upset involved Sweden's favourites, the Corner Creek Green Calves, who battled the Lyndonville Blades for seven long games before securing a 6-4 win with Brian Gionta scoring twice for the victors. "It's almost a worst-case scenario going all seven games, and having to cross the Atlantic every other day," remarked Green Calf Kim Johnsson (who had three assists in the decisive game). "We're fortunate to move on." The reward for the Whitecaps and Green Calves? Their conference's top seeds, each rested and ready after dispatching their opposition in four games apiece. Behind the stellar play of goaltender Tim Thomas, the St. Michael's Privateers swept Quebec City to the golf course, allowing just six goals in the four-game sweep. Out West, the most dominating playoff performance belongs to the league's top team. The North Calgary Hawks blew out the Seattle Sasquatch by an aggregate of twenty-one to six. Teemu Selanne set the pace with a four-goal outburst in Game One's 10-3 drubbing, and Miikka Kiprusoff held back all Seattle comers. For some strange reason, Kiprusoff was on the bench for Game Four - although North Calgary management denied that their star netminder had an injury. Jamie McLennan filled in admirably to complete the sweep. Two more series ended in sweeps, with Manayunk dispatching Buffalo in four straight. Looking for their first series victory, the Bullies picked up veteran netminder Dominik Hasek, and the Czech stymied Buffalo time and time again. The series-clinching game went to extra time before Patrice Brisebois beat Rick DiPietro 18:41 into overtime. Capital City and Fort Garry combined for thirty-six goals in their four-game series; unfortunately for the Fiddler Crabs, the Cougars picked up twenty-three of them en route to their own sweep. Bolstered by the trade deadline acquisitions of Mario Lemieux and Greg Johnson, Capital City overwhelmed Fort Garry's scorers and goalie Roberto Luongo. The Cougars next face the Seattle Rainiers, who took care of Hampton Roads in five games. Despite seven goals from sophomore Eric Staal, the Rainiers defeated the Hounds on the strength of thirteen different goal scorers. Ed Jovanovski returned from a groin injury to rejuvenate the Seattle blueline. The final series also went five games, as the Alexander Ovechkin-led Brooklyn Fourteenth eliminated the Florida Hellcats. After rebuilding in the season prior to the lockout, the Hellcats were a surprise playoff entrant, and the once-Gulag pulled ahead to a three-game lead. After Florida salvaged some pride with a Game Four win on home ice, Ovechkin scored twice the following game to advance. ************************************************************************** BERSERKERS WIN 2007 DRAFT LOTTERY The NSHL entry draft lottery was held at 9pm EDT on Sunday, April 8. 1. MICHAEL'S by Andy Bartalone, St. Michael's owner April 7, 2007 As the weather on Tilghman Island changes from winter to spring, and the longshoremens days get longer with changing of the clocks, hockey fans of all shapes and sizes come down US Route 50 to Maryland 33 and drive 9 miles to The Cove. Home of the St. Michael's Privateers. St. Michael's has filled thier 20,600 seat arena 37 times this year, and set organization records for wins and home wins, as well as attendance. St. Michael's sold out thier first two home playoff games within twenty minutes of clinching first round home ice about three weeks ago, and tickets through the final have been sold out since twenty four hours later. The entire eastern shore of Maryland has been electric going into this week's matchup with the Quebec City Patriotes, a team that we have historically had problems with, no matter where the game was played. A week later, St. Michaels has swept the Patriotes, but it wasnt easy. Three games were decided by one goal and the two big contributors have been mid-season acquisition Brad Richards (3g, 5a) and goalie Tim Thomas (.947 Save%). When interviewed after thier series clinching win at Quebec City, the team boarded thier plane and were back in Baltimore by 2am. With this spring snow storm bringing us a white dusting, the only question at this point is who will be thier round two opponent. ************************************************************************** NAGY, RAINIERS AT ODDS AS CLUB ADVANCES Although much of the talk on local sports talk radio centered on the Rainiers advancing past the conference quarterfinals to face the Capital City Cougars this week, it's not all sunshine and lollipops in the Emerald City. The absence of Ladislav Nagy from the club's playoff series is apparently not due to an injury suffered by the Slovakian winger, but due to a dispute between Nagy and coach Doug Norris on the former's efforts on the ice this year. According to his agent, Nagy has left the club and will await a trade over the offseason. Nagy, who has dropped from a career-high sixty-nine points in 2003-04 to just eleven goals and thirty-two points this year, spent nearly half of the year on the sideline with a back problem. The club had no official comment on the matter, only to say that Nagy was not suspended and that they were not looking to trade him. ************************************************************************** EASTERN CONFERENCE QUARTERFINAL RESULTS: #8 QUEBEC CITY PATRIOTES vs. #1 ST.
