After knocking off powerful Houston in the first round, surely the Vancouver Whitecaps couldn't reprise their performance against top-seeded North Calgary, could they? Could they? Well, no. But one of the league's youngest and most talented teams has a lot to look forward to after pushing the Cup favourite Hawks to seven games. Freshman sensation Sidney Crosby's game-winning goal in a 3-2 Game Five victory gave the Whitecaps two chances to end things and advance to the conference finals in their first postseason. However, the Hawks came out guns blazing in Game Six, scoring twice in the first minutes and four times in the first period en route to a 7-1 drubbing. The snowball continued to roll in the deciding seventh game, with North Calgary pulling out a 5-2 advantage. The Hawks will now face the Seattle Rainiers, who somehow outlasted the Capital City Cougars, whose moves at the trade deadline improved the team beyond their fourth seed would have you believe. After relinquishing home-ice advantage in Game Two, the Rainiers regained things with a 5-2 win in Game Three. With the series tied at two games apiece, Seattle took home 3-2 and 7-6 wins in the final games to advance. Player of the series Manny Legace faced fifty-three shots on goal in each of the final games, but nearly stole the show. In the series, Pavol Demitra is most likely gone for the entire conference finals with a leg injury, while Seattle is relatively healthy. "But we're all banged up at this time of year," said Rainier Dwayne Roloson. "If you're not, then you're not working hard enough." Out East, things were much more strightforward as the conference's top two seeds wrapped up their semifinal series in a total of nine games. After switching to Curtis Sanford, it looked as if the Manayunk Bullies might give Brooklyn a run for their money after Sanford posted a must-win 32-save shutout in Game Four; however, the Fourteenth closed things out at home with a 2-1 win. In Brooklyn's four victories, the Bullies scored a total of four goals as Olaf Kolzig shut the door. In the other series, the Privateers of St. Michael's made short work of their opponents from across the pond. This series was closer than it appeared upon first glance, with each of the first three contests decided by one goal (including a Game One overtime thriller decided by Filip Kuba while shorthanded). Shawn Horcoff paced the Privateers in a 6-1 Game Four win, putting them into the conference finals against fellow charter member Brooklyn. The Fourteenth will be missing Jeremy Roenick and Kyle Wanvig for the East finals, with the Privateers likely dressing a full-strength lineup. Stay tuned for more from what's sure to be two wild conference finals! ************************************************************************** 2007 NSHL AWARDS BALLOT: This is for the first part of our two-part voting procedure, in order to narrow down the finalists for our league awards. Please vote for as many candidates as you would like (including write-in votes if you desire) up to the maximum number for each category. Votes are due by one week from the date of this newsletter (or Friday, May 4, 2007). All owners and associates are encouraged to vote. The categories are deliberately open-ended to allow each voter to decide what he feels is important. Use statistics to guide you, but your vote should be based on whom you honestly feel deserves the award based on the season just completed. Candidates may be written in if you so desire. You are encouraged to consult the NSHL Register and the league file for statistics, as well as your own recollections of games. Please do *not* consider postseason games in your voting. If you have questions, please contact the commissioner. Mario Lemieux and Greg Johnson, acquired at the trade deadline from the Buffalo Bulldogs and Luc Robitaille, a hold-over from the days when the franchise was known as the Indianapolis Chiefs each had their turns at the podium for their own retirement press conferences during the first three days of this week. LUC ROBITAILLE - THE CAPTAIN Luc Robitaille, a formidable left-winger and, prior to this past season, team captain for the Cougars for six seasons. He finished his 11-year NSHL career with 227 goals, 262 assists and 489 points in 717 games. His best season came in 2001-02 when he notched a career high 38 goals and 79 points. With the many acquisitions the Cougars made during the off-season, Robitaille saw his role with the team diminish and with that, relinquished the team captaincy to Joe Sakic. Still, he wanted to play one more year and hope to be part of one more great Cougars team. Robitaille did play 62 games in 2006-07, but often on the 3rd or 4th line on the left side. He scored just 7 goals and tallied 4 assists and saw no ice time during the two rounds the Cougars played in the playoffs. Robitaille will be honored in a pre-game ceremony sometime early in the 2007-08 NSHL season on a date yet to be determined. LATE ARRIVALS - LE MAGNIFIQUE, GREG JOHNSON He wasn't a Cougar for very long, but he definitely helped the team in its playoff run while it lasted. Lemieux's NSHL career was a short one, having also retired once previously between 1998 and 2001. He was a member of the Buffalo Bulldogs for five of his seven NSHL seasons, including the cup winning squad back in 2001-02. When the Cougars obtained him at this year's trade deadline, it was for one reason and one reason only - the playoffs. He played in all 10 playoff games for Capital City, scoring 4 goals and 3 assists, including the game-winning goal in game four of the Western Conference semifinals against the Seattle Rainiers that, at that point, tied the series at two games each. He centered the third and fourth lines over the course of the playoffs, though the line combinations were certainly not the usual third or fourth line types of players. In his press conference, he thanked the fans for their support and to Cougars management for bringing him in for their playoff run. Greg Johnson, who arrived in Capital City along with Mario Lemieux at the trade deadline, played well defensively and on the penalty kill, despite not making an impact on the scoresheet during his time with the team. He appeared in 16 regular season games and none in the playoffs and recorded no points. It was actually the second stint on the Cougars for Johnson. The first time around, though, he never made it to the ice. Back in July of 1999, Johnson was traded by the Lyndonville Blades in exchange for Mike Knuble and Eric Messier. Just under a month later, he was sent packing to Buffalo for goaltender John Vanbiesbrouck. NEWS & NOTES: With no picks in the first three rounds of the NSHL draft next September, Cougars GM Brian Leahy will spend the off-season evaluating the current roster to see what changes might be in order. The goaltending tandem of Marty Turco and Manny Legace appears to be set for next season, though. Core players such as forwards Joe Sakic, Daniel Alfredsson, Jason Blake, as well as defensemen Philippe Boucher and Mathieu Schneider are locked in and are most definite to be in training camp for the Cougars come next September. ************************************************************************** 2007 VEZINA CUP TOURNAMENT CANCELLED Brian Leahy, Capital City owner (AP) LINCOLN, NEBRASKA.....In a press release issued to the media earlier today, organizers of the Vezina Cup post-season invitational tournament stated that there will not be an event this year due to lack of interest. "While we did have a few of the teams that were eligible to participate express interest in competing in the tourney, we did not have enough teams respond to make the event functional," said Brian Leahy, who has run the Vezina Cup tournament since its inception in 2003. Leahy is also owner, GM and coach of the Capital City Cougars, whose home arena plays host to the annual post-season event. The eight teams that do not qualify for the Farley Cup playoffs are eligible to compete in the tournament. Leahy stated that it serves as a way to get some of the younger or depth players a chance to play in competition before management has to make any roster decisions during the off-season. "We could put the tourney on with even just six of the eight teams, but beyond that, the event structure does not work as well," Leahy said. "While we're disappointed we could not field an event this year, we will certainly look into the possiblity of having the event again next year." ************************************************************************** NSHL CAREER LEADERS (through 2006-07) Goaltender leaderboards will be in newsletter 10.19!
