In order to get there, both had to endure exciting series against the top seeds in their conference. In the first season post-lockout, ABC and CBC were the real winners, breaking records across the continent and recording nine of the month's most-watched programs. The top East seeds, Brooklyn and St. Michael's, met in the East finals, and it started with a bang as both teams opened things up. The squads combined for thirteen goals in Game One with the Privateers' Martin St. Louis beating Olaf Kolzig early in overtime. Brooklyn recovered to take the next three games, the last two at home, to build a three-games-to-one edge in the series. The top-seeded Privateers once again needed extra time to win Game Five, but blueliner Jason Smith extended the club's lifeline by beating Kolzig 14:16 into overtime. Back at home, the Fourteenth advanced to their first Finals in nine years on the shoulders of Lemieux Trophy candidate Alexander Ovechkin. The first-overall selection in last September's draft (at a heavy price), Ovechkin scored all three Brooklyn goals and Kolzig (29 saves, 4/4 GR) did the rest in a 3-1 win. Out West, the Rainiers and North Calgary Hawks have met in the playoffs in each of the past three seasons, and each time the series has gone six games or longer. For the first six games, this one was a Dickensian tale of two cities, with the Rainiers dominating Games Three, Four and Six at Key Arena and the Hawks controlling action in Games One, Two and Five. In fact, in Seattle home games, the Rainiers outscored North Calgary by a 17-5 margin. In the Hawks' home building, North Calgary held a 15-9 advantage. It seemed to be a fait accompli that these trends would hold true in Game Seven. Early in the third period, the Hawks looked to take control of the series when Brian Rolston beat Dwayne Roloson to give his club a 3-2 lead. However, with 6:55 left in regulation Andy McDonald did what he's done so many times this season, beating Miikka Kiprusoff with a clutch goal to send the game to overtime. Barely eight minutes into the Game Seven overtime, after the Rainiers had killed off two North Calgary power plays, Seattle blueliner Nick Boynton fired a slapshot from the top of the faceoff dot to beat Kiprusoff with a 1-16 split roll. The Hawks can look back and say "what might have been"? What if top sniper Pavol Demitra hadn't missed the entire postseason with a knee injury? What if Kiprusoff hadn't succumbed to food poisoning prior to Game Three? Regardless, it was a classic battle between two powerhouses, and the Rainiers move on. Barely. So there you have it, the Fourteenth and the Rainiers - two original franchises with different names the last time they met in the Finals (the Gulag versus the Pirates). Can Jonathan Cheechoo and Dany Heatley outscore the freshman wonder Ovechkin? Will Kolzig outduel Roloson? The entire series will be live in prime time on ABC, so keep watching! ************************************************************************** CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT PROPOSALS DUE JUNE 15: Please get your amendment proposals to Patrick Shea by June 15th.
