Therefore: All players must be scheduled for a minimum of FIVE SHIFTS (15 action cards) per regulation game, not including overtime. In the case of computer managers, these shifts must be scheduled within the first eight shifts of each period. I will amend the New Owner FAQ to reflect this. Note that if you are using four rolling lines in the first two periods, this requires your fourth line to see a shift in the third period. ********************************************************************* WEEK ONE/TWO IN REVIEW: Two goaltenders started out the NSHL season in fine form - one youngster and one veteran. Florida's Ray Emery and Brooklyn's Olaf Kolzig each registered four shutouts in the season's first eight contests, and in the process, put together some remarkable whitewash streak. In the end, Emery totalled 233:40 without a goal while Kolzig finished with 194:36. Wow! On the back of Kolzig, the Brooklyn Fourteenth were the big team story of Week 1/2, going a perfect 8-0 to climb atop the league's initial standings. The defending Eastern Conference champions are now on pace for...wait for it...164 points! And all of the NSHL is wondering..."can they do it?" More goaltender news was in the form of bad news, as a rash of netminder injuries forced franchises to dip down into their farm clubs for help. Roberto Luongo, Vesa Toskala and Marc-Andre Fleury will all miss time in Week 3/4, although none are expected to be out for a long period of time. Other big names experiencing long injuries are Marian Gaborik, Peter Forsberg, Patrik Elias, Mats Sundin, Martin Havlat, and John LeClair. Expect the Wanderers' front office to petition the league to abolish the shootout. Montreal fell thrice in the postgame tiebreaker this biweek, dropping games to Pittsburgh, Quebec City and Stone Harbor. Rumours of Ed Belfour's demise have been greatly exaggerated. The forty-one year old stopped forty one Hampton Roads shots to shut out the hometown Hounds, 1-0, on October 28. ********************************************************************* HOUSTON AEROS REPORT by Mike Kuduk, Houston owner AEROS SPUTTER BEFORE RECORD CROWD With the Toyota Center fully booked for a concert by Disney diva Hannah Montana, the Houston Aeros opened their pursuit of the Farley Cup looking more like bit skaters in Holiday On Ice, dropping a 3-0 decision to the more motivated Hampton Roads Hounds. The game was moved to the vacant Houston Astrodome three weeks ago, after arrangements could not be worked out with downtown arena management. The Aeros used the ice making equipment from the old Summit, now Lakewood Church (maybe a motivational speech by Reverend Osteen will wake them up for their next game), and set up the rink at the Fannin Street end of the Dome. Temporary seats were erected in the infield, and largely due to special pricing ($10.00 per seat in the 700 level), the paid attendance was 28,594. Despite the huge crowd and noisy introductions of the 2007-08 team, the Aeros fell asleep at the control yoke, getting outshot 13-7 in the first period, with Tomas Vokoun failing to stop a Glen Murray slap shot from just inside the blue line a minute into the contest. The Aeros would not play a significant role in the contest until late in the second period, however a Nathan Horton goal early in the third would end the rally. GM Mike Kuduk was upset with the team's performance. "You would think with all these people in the stands, we would have been more charged up. If this game was successful, I had plans to have two or three more games here at the Dome, as the logistics went really smoothly, and the ice stayed good throughout the contest. But if this team continues to play like this, the Tomball Civic Center might be more appropriate." The Aeros have three more games remaining in this home stand. TIPPETT MISSILE EXPLODES IN THIRD AGAINST BULLIES Aeros coach Dave Tippett went ballistic in the third period of last night's 6-3 loss to Manayunk, with a display the 16,365 fans will not likely ever forget. Houston loafed through the first two periods, getting outshot 33-18 and outscored 4-0. The breaking point was Anson Carter's goal 3 minutes into the third, which put the Bullies up 5-0. Tippett jumped out from behind the bench to greet Patrik Elias, Stu Barnes, and Jeff Halpern, who has the misfortune of being on the ice for the goal. Tippett got eye-to-chest with Elias, whose ugly giveaway led to the goal, and then proceeded to berate his linemates. Coach Tippett was not done yet - he started pulling out sticks from the stick rack, throwing them first on the ice, then at the bench, on a verbal tirade the entire time (from what fans were saying behind the bench, none of what could be repeated in public). Afterwards, he stormed off to the locker room, and shortly thereafter left the building. GM Mike Kuduk said, "With the way we were playing, I don't blame Dave at all. And if he didn't do that, I would have - just after the game." Mike is awaiting a decision from league president Doug Norris and disciplinarian Brian Leahy regarding the likely suspension Tippett will face for his tirade. GM Kuduk indicated that if coach Tippett misses any games, he will be behind the bench. With intrigue like this, who needs reality TV? ********************************************************************* WHAT GOES UP MUST COME DOWN - HAWKS WIN TWO OF FIRST EIGHT GAMES by Jason McCorrister, North Calgary owner In 2006-07 the North Calgary Hawks set an NSHL record with 124 points in a season. They had one of the top lines in the league in Rolston, Brind'Amour, and Selanne as well as one of the best powerplays and an amazing goaltender. With such an incredible season, the team really set the bar high. Flash to the first bi-week of the season and it is easy to see that the times are changing. With an infusion of young talent into the western conference following the post-lockout bonus draft, many of the Hawks' rivals have improved drastically. Couple that with retirements, a sub-par season for guys like Modano and Zhitnik, and add in some weak defense ratings and you have a recipe for disaster. Thus far, the aging team has been outplayed by 20 somethings, only managing to win two of its first eight games. It's looking like it could be a long year for the Hawks. General Manager Jason McCorrister has said that the team has three choices: dismantle and rebuild; reposition his team as a 30~Rish team; or let his team play it out and hope for a bit of luck come the post season. "A lot will depend on the mood of the league," said McCorrister on Tuesday. "If teams are willing to trade younger, talented guys for our vets, then you may see some moves. Otherwise, we'll make one more run at the cup." ********************************************************************* KABERLE DROPS, RAINIERS NEED A DEFENSEMAN by Doug Norris, Seattle Rainiers owner When Frank Kaberle felt his shoulder twinge at practice the other day, the entire city of Seattle went on injured reserve with a giant headache. "It originally got banged up during the Finals last spring," remarked team doctor Todd Phillips in a press conference on Monday. "Early in the summer, we made the decision not to have surgery because it would heal on its own. That healing process has taken longer than was expected." With Kaberle expected to be out for at least two months, the Rainiers' situation on the blueline doesn't get any better. Behind the top six of Jaroslav Spacek, Ed Jovanovski, Brian Rafalski, Chris Chelios, Bryan Allen and Nick Boynton, the club has...who? Danny Richmond, Oleg Tverdovsky and Derrick Walser are the top blueliners on the farm in Tacoma, but a championship-caliber club really shouldn't be relying on any of them. And it's not as if the top six are iron men. Rumours are that the club is offering any of the following: Andy McDonald, Kirk Maltby, Petr Nedved, Mark Parrish, Ladislav Nagy, or any of the team's 2008 entry draft choices. When asked about top Tacoma forward Valtteri Filppula, Norris said "Anything's possible." RAINIER NOTES: * Vesa Toskala's groin injury has forced the recall of Philippe Sauve from Tacoma. Sauve is not expected to see any action behind Dwayne Roloson for the short time Toskala will be out. * What is Brian Rafalski more proud of - eleven assists in the first eight games, or a plus-ten over the same timespan? "I've been really concentrating on my defensive angles and gap control, so I'm excited that it's working so far. But I've been lucky, too." * Mike Fisher - tied for fifth in the league with 14 takeaways. But he's only taken five minor penalties over that span. Has he learned to control his anti-social behaviour? "I still like to hit. There are a few guys I won't be sending Christmas cards to," joked the forward. ********************************************************************* WEEK ONE/TWO RESULTS: Vancouver 3, at Brooklyn 4 BRK Jarret Stoll - Appearing in all eight, Langkow scored eight times and totalled fifteen points, meaning that he was in on 56% of Florida's tallies. Langkow's best performance was a three-goal, eight-shot outing against the Massasauga on the 19th, his third game in three nights. The native Edmontonian is now tied for the league lead in goals (with Bill Guerin and Thomas Vanek) and points (with Daniel Alfredsson). Congratulations! Well, I'm overriding that with another convention - if you somehow manage to get four shutouts in a single biweek, then you deserve an award. This week, both Olaf Kolzig (Brooklyn) and Ray Emery (Florida) managed the phenomenal feat. Overall, Kolzig went a perfect 7-0 with a 1.00 goals-against average and 96.4% save percentage, while Emery went 5-1 with a 1.41 goals-against average and 95.4% save percentage.
