Thanks again to Jeff Tsuruoka and Brian Leahy for their great articles, and thank you to everyone who has sent me captains thus far. A few "action items" in this biweek's newsletter, so please read it. And awaaaaaay we go! ********************************************************************* PLEASE SUBMIT YOUR ALL-STAR GAME NOMINEES! The NSHL's annual celebration of the league's top players will kick off in about one month, and we need your input as to who deserves an invitation! By December 24, please submit to me six of your players for the annual all-star ballot. One player eligible to play at each position should be nominated, with left and right defense counting as separate positions. Preferably, the nominated players will have played primarily at those positions during the first half of the 2007-08 NSHL season. If you have any questions or comments about the process, please contact me. In addition, if you're interested in hosting the Eleventh Annual NSHL All-Star Classic, please contact me immediately. ********************************************************************* SOONER IF POSSIBLE! Games for this biweek are due on December 24th - Christmas Eve. I'll have a laptop computer with me while I'm at home in Seattle over the holidays, but the more games I can process before I leave, the better for me (and the sooner I can get you a "new"sletter. So particularly if you're the type who plays all of your games at once - I'm not implying anything here - then the sooner the better for me. Thanks! Also, the block after this one (Week 11/12) will be three weeks in length. ********************************************************************* WEEK SEVEN/EIGHT IN REVIEW: Very rarely is a penalty shot awarded in overtime. Even more is when the shot is awarded to a defensive defenseman. But Scott Hannan made it pay off for the Houston Aeros, beating Nikolai Khabibulin on the shot awarded after he was pulled down by Craig Rivet. Final score: 2-1, Houston. Wow - if the playoffs started today, then all six teams from the Northwest Division would make the playoffs! Don't expect it to last, however, because the super six go at it again with a divisional-centric slate in Week 9/10. One thing might not change - the Fort Garry Fiddler Crabs have opened a seven-point margin on the rest of their division (and conference!) ********************************************************************* NSHL'S ALL-TIME GREATEST TIME? MAKING THE MOST OF A LATE CAREER KICK AT THE CAN by Jeff Tsuruoka, Brooklyn owner Jeremy Roenick thought his career was over. "I thought I was done, that I was going to play out the string in Long Island, shake some hands and that would be that. And I was OK with that. It's been a hell of a ride." Then the trade deadline came around and Brooklyn came looking for a defenceman. Roenick found himself included in the deal which sent Kyle McLaren to Brooklyn and brought Jiri Hudler and Tom Poti to Long Island. "Pat asked me about it first, if I was willing to move at this stage of the game after spending my whole NSHL career here but I decided I wanted one more kick at the can. The Bezerker organization has been nothing but class as far as I'm concerned." Roenick says that he felt at home in Brooklyn from the start. "They wanted some veteran leadership for the playoff run and I told them I was their man." Just when things started to get rolling in the postseason Roenick suffered a significant knee injury. "I really thought I was done then." But he managed to heal quickly - at least enough to get back into the lineup for the Farley Cup Finals against the Seattle Rainiers. The Finals did not go well for Brooklyn, but that disappointment has only served to fire up Roenick even more. This season, the veteran is playing regularly and has been an integral part of his team's solid start. An injury to forward Matt Pettinger landed Roenick on the right wing next to Alexander Ovechkin - and he's made the most of that time. "A fire hydrant could put up points playing with that kid," said Roenick. "His enthusiasm is infectious. I feel like a kid out there again. Plus my experience helps him keep getting better. It's all good." For his part, Ovechkin is also happy to have JR around. "He is such good player," said the Fourteenth's star wing. "He is like big brother for me." Big brother, Alex? "Ok. More like crazy uncle," said Ovechkin with a grin. ********************************************************************* COUGAR NOTES by Brian Leahy, Capital City owner (AP) LINCOLN, NEBRASKA.....The Cougars had a reversal of fortune this past bi-week, notching a 6-2 record after posting a dismal 2-6 record in the previous bi-week. The only losses? A shutout on the road at Buffalo and a heart-breaking shootout loss at home against border rival Topeka. Now, with a modest 4-game winning streak in hand, Capital City is set to play a bi-week against the likes of Brooklyn, Corner Creek, Hampton Roads, Houston (home and home), Topeka, Pittsburgh and Minneapolis. "The games against our division are always tough," said Coach Brian Leahy, "and having to go on the road against Brooklyn will make this next bi-week that much tougher. But I think we've turned things around and are playing some good hockey right now." Consistency is the key. The season for the Cougars thus far has been quite up-and-down. For one, starting netminder Marty Turco has an 11-11 record, while backup Manny Legace is sporting a 7-3 record. While Turco was once thought as a clear cut favorite to start the majority of games, Legace has put in his two cents to make sure he isn't forgotten in the discussion. TRADE WINDS BLOW IN A FAMILIAR FACE The first trade of the season for the Cougars saw veteran forwards Jason Blake and Alexei Yashin dealt to Nevada in exchange for Daniel Cleary and Pavol Demitra. With Demitra, it is his second stint with the club, for he was on the roster when the team first moved from Indianapolis back in 1999. He was later dealt to Houston in the Spring of 2001 in a multi-player deal that saw Viktor Kozlov, Mathieu Schneider and a #1 pick (Filip Kuba) come back the other way. In his previous 3 seasons with the Indianapolis/Capital City franchise, Demitra amassed 107 goals and 197 points in 217 games. "We're thrilled to have Pavol back," GM Brian Leahy said, "and Dan Cleary should fare well here, also." Leahy went on to add that both Yashin and Blake were in the final years of their respective contracts and had indicated that they both wished to test the market in the off-season. "Both Jason and Alexei contributed a lot to our club during their time here. But, the risk of losing them without getting anything back was there and looming big. With Pavol, we get someone that can play all 3 forward positions and Dan definitely helps us on the left side." Asked if any further trades are on the horizon, Leahy only had this to say, "we don't have anything active at the moment, but we are always keeping an eye out to see if something can help our team improve. At the same time, we're willing to give the current lineup some more time to show what they can do." NEWS & NOTES With the departure of Jason Blake, the vacated "A" was given to fellow winger Daniel Alfredsson. He joins defenseman Paul Martin wearing the "A", while Joe Sakic is in the midst of his 2nd year as team captain. Speaking of the recent trade, Mathieu Schneider, acquired on April 18, 2001, is the longest serving, uninterrupted tenured player on the current Cougars squad. Veteran winger Scott Mellanby is next, having joined the club in May of 2002. ********************************************************************* PENALTY KILLERS CALLED ON CARPET by Doug Norris, Seattle Rainiers owner The good news in Seattle? A league-leading thirty-six goals with the man advantage, coupled with a top 26.7% power play percentage. The bad news? The Rainiers are allowing goals on 22.4 percent of all opponent power plays, a number coach Doug Norris calls "unacceptable". "Maybe it's my fault - we've certainly been extra aggressive because we have the forwards for it - (Mike) Fisher, (Chris) Drury, Patrick Marleau...but if we're not scoring goals, maybe we should tail it back." The Rainiers only have one shorthanded goal. Asked if the recent loss of Mike Sillinger via trade has hurt the team in this area, Norris left no doubt. "Obviously. But our other players can step up if they really want to. And if they don't want to, they probably don't want the ice time, either." RAINIER NOTES: * Brian Rafalski finally got off the schneid this biweek, and he did it in a big way. After scoring his first thirty-two points of the 2007-08 campaign via assists, Rafalski tallied twice in a 4-1 win in Fort Garry December 1. The pintsized dynamo now has thirty-four points. "I was starting to press a bit," he admitted after the game. * On the other end of the spectrum, Mike Fisher has eleven goals and only five assists. * Who's in goal? Dwayne Roloson and Vesa Toskala have alternated games all season for the club with the exception of the games Toskala missed with a groin pull. Norris says that he's waiting for one to take the reins, but so far neither has impressed. Toskala's 90.7% save percentage and 2.44 goals-against average, while better than Roloson's, are nothing to shout about. Look for the club to make a move for a proven number-one - dangling either (or both) of their 2008 first-round draft choices if necessary. ********************************************************************* WEEK SEVEN/EIGHT RESULTS: Minneapolis 2, at Brooklyn 4 BRK Alexander Ovechkin - Yeah, this one probably wasn't very close. Brooklyn leads their conference by a six-point margin, and they owe it in large part to their third-year Gretzky Trophy candidate. In Week 7/8, Ovechkin had *twelve* goals and six assists while finishing plus-ten. In a testament to Ovechkin's importance, in Brooklyn's first home loss of the year, he was help pointless. +/- SOG G A PIM PP SH FO-W AC IT TA HIT SP AS 11/28 at CCC 0 4 1 0 2 0 0 0-0 37 21:43 1 0 2 3 11/30 vs MIN 3 6 2 1 0 0 0 2-0 39 21:33 1 0 1 3 12/01 at ESA 2 6 2 0 2 0 0 1-0 33 18:26 0 0 0 2 12/02 vs ESA 3 7 2 1 2 0 0 0-0 34 19:27 1 2 2 3 12/03 vs BUF 0 3 0 0 0 0 0 1-1 38 20:30 0 0 0 2 12/05 at BUF -1 5 2 0 0 1 0 0-0 40 22:06 1 2 1 1 12/07 at LYN 0 5 2 0 0 2 0 0-0 43 24:21 0 0 2 2 12/10 vs CGC 3 8 1 4 0 0 0 0-0 41 22:03 1 1 1 1 Other worthy finalists are Martin St. Louis of Buffalo, Tomas Kaberle of les Patriotes, Rod Brind'amour in North Calgary and Mattias Ohlund of Fort Garry. 2007-08 NSHL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK: October 31: Daymond Langkow, Florida November 14: Henrik Zetterberg, Vancouver November 28: Jarome Iginla, Pittsburgh December 12: Alexander Ovechkin, Brooklyn ********************************************************************* GOALTENDER OF THE WEEK: Martin Brodeur, Pittsburgh. The hard-luck goaltender of the biweek as well, Brodeur has done everything in his power to keep the Sound Chasers afloat in a tightly-competed Central Division, although he hasn't gotten as much help as he would like. Playing in all eight games this biweek, Brodeur stopped 227 of 244 shots (48 of 59 Goalie Ratings) - and in his four losses, his team scored a total of two goals for him. Can the potential Hall-of-Famer finish the job? No one wants to face him in the playoffs, that's for sure.
