The National Strat-O-Matic Hockey League Newsletter League Established May 1, 1997 Volume #11, Issue #10 - January 16, 2008 ********************************************************************* Current League Officers: Commissioner: Doug Norris Vice-Commissioner: Brian Leahy (7/15/07 to present) Email the whole league: mailto:nshl at yahoogroups dot com NSHL Chat List: mailto:nshlchat at yahoogroups dot com Web Page Administrator: Guy Caron League Web Site: http://nshl.org Files Adminstrator: Brian Leahy / Tom Vinacci League Files Site: http://www.highrantdistrict.com/SOM/NSHL Team Websites: Capital City Cougars: http://members.tripod.com/~CapCity/ Seattle Rainiers: http://math.colorado.edu/~norrisdt/rainiers/rainiers.html ********************************************************************* BEGIN NOTES: An excellent newsletter this biweek - mainly due to the great writings by our league owners. I love reading these, and I hope that you do as well - they give the league a sense of depth that isn't found in many leagues of this type. Two new policies implemented immediately, and documented here for posterity's sake: (*) The biweekly deadline for games played will now be Sunday at 9pm Eastern Time. Under the current system, I can get 80% of the games processed on the weekend; however, I cannot do most of the newsletter until all games are in. Since some people push the boundary - even bend the boundary - I usually cannot do anything to the newsletter until Tuesday evening at the earliest. (*) For every game in which the home team has skaters violating minimum usage rules, an explanation should be part of the game report. Thank you for your help with these! ********************************************************************* WEEK ELEVEN/TWELVE IN REVIEW: Before you go any further, take a gander at the Northwest Division standings - not only are all six teams well above the 0.500 mark, but the distance from top to bottom is eight points. I certainly cannot remember a division race this tight this late in the season. On the other end of the spectrum, Brooklyn still leads out east, going 7-1 in Week 11/12 to take a fourteen point lead on the Northeast Division and Eastern Conference, led by the play of All-Star starters Alexander Ovechkin and Olaf Kolzig. Zdeno Chara had a big night when his Berserkers hosted the Vancouver Whitecaps on January 10. In Long Island's 5-2 victory, Chara had two assists, five takeaways and three hits! Throw in Bates Battaglia's four takeaways, and it's no wonder that the potent Vancouver offense was limited to twenty-five shots on goal. If you're looking for top goaltending performances, then look no further than Montreal's fabulous Forum on January 13, as the Wanderers hosted the Seattle Sasquatch. The Sasquatch outshot the home team by a 47-21 margin, but lost the game, 2-1, thanks to an 11/12 GR performance from rookie netminder Fredrik Norrena. What's the all-time league record for Goalie Ratings faced in a single game? I'd like to know if you have a candidate that tops this one - on New Year's Day, Florida's Ray Emery was peppered with *seventeen* GRs from the awakened Houston offense - as you may expect, the Hellcats were drubbed by the Aeros by an 8-3 margin. And it wasn't just Florida that Houston took care of in Week 11/12 - the Aeros dropped a perfect 8-0 biweek on the rest of the league to pull within five points of the Capital City Cougars for division (and conference) supremacy. No one has been eliminated from the playoffs just yet, although Minneapolis has a plausible shot at achieving that dubious distinction over the next two weeks. It appears that the Massasauga will be adding yet another talented young player to their stable of youth, and could be a force soon. ********************************************************************* 2007-08 ALL-STAR GAME The 2007-08 NSHL All-Star Game will be held in beautiful Topeka this year, as players, coaches and fans converge upon the Kansas capital for a four-day celebration of hockey. The Eastern Conference starting lineup will feature two individuals who were unanimously voted to the honour - Brooklyn's Alexander Ovechkin and Buffalo's Martin St. Louis. They will be joined on the top line by Quebec City product Daniel Briere (the most astute draft selection in league history?). Holding the fort defensively will be a pair of Slovakians, Lubomir Visnovsky (Florida) and Zdeno Chara (Long Island). Starting in goal will be fan favourite Olaf Kolzig (Brooklyn). Out West, the starting right wing position was determined in a run-off ballot, with North Calgary's Marian Hossa edging out Jaromir Jagr in a tiebreaker that was nearly as close as the original vote. Hossa joins a starting six all from the Northwest Division - Henrik Zetterberg (VAN), Jason Spezza (SES), Kimmo Timonen (FGF), Dan Boyle (SES) and Roberto Luongo (FGF). With all of those Northwest Division players on the West squad, it only makes sense to have a Central Division coach, right? Brian Leahy of the Capital City Cougars used a strong week 11/12 to edge past Doug Norris and Murray Moman, and he will coach the West. The Eastern Conference coach will be the man whose team has an incredible fourteen-point lead on the rest of the conference, Jeff Tsuroka of the defending conference champion Brooklyn Fourteenth. Congratulations to both! Full voting totals are later in the newsletter; reserves will be selected by the conference coaches and announced shortly. Thank you to all who voted! ********************************************************************* LET'S MAKE A DEAL by Trader Dan Irvine, Nevada owner Some ask, what is it like being in 5 leagues? How do you find time to keep track of all your rosters, play games and most of all make as many trades as you do? Simple: I don't work, I manage SOMH teams for a living. Just Kidding. I find trading the most enjoyable part of SOMH. Just cannot stand to stand pat too long, after a while you get tired of looking and playing with the same cards over and over again. Sometimes making deals just to change up the rosters a bit. Sometimes making a deal that I may have lost on but a deal that facilitates another deal where I can gain on. Just all part of the fun! A typical day would be to wake up and check my emails for results and any trade offers or responses from any of my offers out there. Then check in with my scouts and assistant GM's on the teams for a briefing as to what we can expect for the day and if they have anything on the burner I should know about. Then I actually go to work, and throughout the day I would check my emails only about 20-30 times so I don't miss anything important like something SOM related. Or maybe an important email from Doug! Maybe Tommy will have something to say in an email: Then check standings, other team rosters looking for potential deals and have my staff provide me with up to the minute statistics and any new information on the wires. Then I may send out an offer or 2 and wait for the responses. So that's 5 leagues times 2 offers per day, not bad eh. So I say let's make a deal. There has to be other fanatics out there like me, isn't there??? Even with all that activity and time I still had time to win 5 Conference titles and 4 Championships in the last 3 years :). Now only if I can beat Mr. Norris' team. :( Now where have those offer sheets gone? Trader Dan ********************************************************************* VIEW FROM THE CLIFF by Chris Malitsky, Stone Harbor owner The 2007-08 NSHL season has quickly cruised past its halfway point. At the beginning of the year, Sound GM Chris Malitsky was hopeful another flurry of trades had moved his team into a level of play that would get them respected and from a team known as a perpetual also ran. High expectations have lead to the reality of another dismal showing. The team started off quickly, but their play has tailed off dramatically. Every small injury to a starting player showed not only the lack of team depth, but the ever present chasm between the starting players and the starters of other teams. M alitsky was sure his young goaltender Henrik Lundqvist and what he thought was a solid and deep defense would keep his team in many games. However, something is not clicking the way it should with this team - AGAIN. This is particularly frustrating for the GM as he thought this team was the most talented he has had to this point. That is why a phone call from Brooklyn GM Jeff Tsuruoka looking for help did not go ignored. The call came at just the right time for the Sound GM, who can be triggered into trading frenzies. Brooklyn was inquiring about Sound d-man, Barrett Jackman. Jackman was having a very solid season, maybe even a career year, so it was no surprise Tsuruoka was inquiring. Other GMs have made requests during the season as well. Malitsky toyed a bit with what Brooklyn had available, then steered an offer their way including winger Mike Comrie and center Brendan Morrison. The offer from Malitsky included two players who the GM thinks extremely highly of. But he saw the need to look ahead again. His asking price was young defenseman, Paul Ranger, BRK #1, and young winger Martin Erat. Brooklyn bit on the package that helps with depth this year. The Sound in turn get more building blocks in their rebuilding cycle. This cycle appears thus far to be nothing more than a mouse on a wheel chasing a piece of cheese. When asked about the deal, Malitsky was quoted as saying, "What else can I do? This is a tough league with many "haves" and some "have nots". The "have nots" have continued to try to build, but the top teams have way too much talent to start with and deal from. This is not going t be easy." Far to say his task was impossible, the GM did seem clearly annoyed at the current situation. The team also announced the claiming of forward Erik Rasmussen and the release of for Darryl Bootland. Many expect the Sound GM to be moving other players so do not be surprised to see more deals geared toward the future. ********************************************************************* COUGARS GAIN TOP CONFERENCE SPOT; TOUGH ROAD AHEAD by Brian Leahy, Capital City owner (AP) LINCOLN, NEBRASKA.....The past few weeks have been very successful for the Cougars and, as of this article, currently have them atop the Western Conference dogpile as well as the Central Division. There's no time to sit back and enjoy the view, though. The upcoming slate of games is a potentially trecherous one: two teams nipping at their heels in the conference standings - Fort Garry and the Seattle Rainiers - will be home-and-home opponents for Capital City. Always tough Long Island and North Calgary are on there, too. A long flight to Corner Creek doesn't help things and the week finishes off with a visit by Sidney Crosby and company from Vancouver. "No doubt, we have a tough upcoming schedule," said Cougars coach Brian Leahy. "It will definitely test us to see if we're as good as we think we are or if there are problems we need to fix. Better to do so now than come playoff time." It's no secret that the main ingredients for the Cougars success thus far has been that of the contributions by captain Joe Sakic, Daniel Alfredsson and stellar goaltending from the tandem of Manny Legace and Marty Turco. Sakic currently has 21 goals and 70 points, while Alfredsson is about to eclipse the 30 goal mark with 29 and 64 points through 48 games. Both forwards, along with Slava Kozlov, defensemen Joe Corvo and Mathieu Schneider and goalie Manny Legace are All-Star nominees. PROSPECT WATCH The cupboard is pretty bare for the Cougars in terms of youngsters on the current roster. While some have seen spot duty, none of the players selected in the past two NSHL drafts is seeing much in the way of playing time this season. Though, according to coach Leahy, that might start to change. "We have to give them more chances to be evaluated as practice time isn't enough," said Leahy. "I'd like to insert them into the lineup now and again to give some of the regulars a break. The problem is, every game is meaningful and you don't want to tinker with the lines all that much and upset the chemistry." Looking towards the future, though, one wonders how much longer management can rely upon the veterans before the wheels inevitably come off. With some of the roster most likely not coming back after this season and none of the current crop of young players looking like they will fill their spots without a doubt next season, the Cougars must be feeling some pressure to win now. Management has shown no intentions of going into rebuilding mode or gutting the roster to try and get drastically younger. That has made it tough to make any transactions during the season. "It's been tough talking deals with other teams because our assets mainly lie in the players frequently in our lineup from night to night and I'm reluctant to tinker much with that at this point," remarked Cougars GM Brian Leahy. NEWS & NOTES Capital City submitted a bid to host the 2008 NSHL All-Star Game. With its new Qwest Center building, which opened earlier this season, ownership felt it would be a good stage to show off the new facilities. The team is expected to find out on Wednesday, when the league office is expected to make the announcement. The Cougars have hosted the All-Star Game once before, back in 2004 (a 3-2 victory for the Eastern Conference). While Capital City has a brand new building for the showcase game, the league tends to prefer to have the game played in a different venue each year...Also a possibility for the upcoming All-Star Game is that Cougars coach Brian Leahy may be selected to head the Western Conference squad. If that happens, it will be his first selection. [Editor's Note: this was written prior to the announcement that Topeka would be hosting the 2008 NSHL All-Star Game. However, Leahy was named to head the Western Conference squad, and he and his players will have just a short trip to the game.] ********************************************************************* AEROS FLIGHT BRIEFING by Mike Kuduk, Houston owner Houston coach Dave Tippett reportedly gave an inspirational speech at the team's Christmas dinner on Christmas Eve. Whatever he said, he needs to bottle it and sell it, because the Aeros haven't lost a game since, and today is January 15. Captain Mats Sundin said, "Oh, he didn't say anything really new. The walls didn't shake or anything. He just pointed out our team's strengths, and sort of inspired us as to what was possible." The loose play which had characterized most of the first half of the season for the Aeros has more or less completely disappeared, and better communication in the offensive zone has been evident. During the last eight games, Houston averaged scoring 5 goals a game on the road, and gave up only 7 goals in four home games. Backchecking has been solid, and the Houston netminders have not been asked to perform the sort of heroics they were regularly doing to keep the Aeros in their games early in the season. "Our defensemen are starting to use their size to their advantage, and that is starting to take away scoring chances for the opposition. And on offense, we're really starting to move the puck around and find the open man. Basics, basics, basics," said Tippett recently. If only it were that simple.... ********************************************************************* THE BULLIES WANT TO MOVE WEST! by Lee Yelshin, Manayunk owner After spending the season so far picking up six to nine points per biweek, it seemed like the Bullies had a lock on the last playoff spot and an outside chance at a .500 season. Then the team began an extended Western visit for weeks 11 and 12. The Bullies wound up 6-2, winning all four away games. Dominik Hasek was 4-2 for this series, earning a 91.8 save percentage. Notable scorers this biweek: Mike Knuble (5 goals, 2 assists) Marco Sturm (4 goals, 7 assists) Petr Cajanek (7 assists, 4 in the game vs. CCC) The team is seriously considering a move out West. One of the challenges affecting the team this year is a serious identity crisis. The top twelve forwards are seventy games short of a full season, with four skaters needed to rest ten games or more throughout the season. Four substitute forwards have been used, and you can expect the top two to be using all of the available games. The top six defensemen are short 42 games, all but one of which are due to short seasons for Bouillon and Roche. Three additional defensemen have been used to fill the ranks. Hasek can cover a good six games per biweek, but the Manayunk second string goalie, Sabourin, will be using all of his games, and #3 MacDonald most of his. Chances are, teams won't be seeing the same Manayunk team twice this season. ********************************************************************* SELANNE HAS NO "FINNISH" by Jason McCorrister, North Calgary owner Teemu Selanne was the trigger man for the Hawks' record breaking season in 2006-07, pacing the team with 57 goals and taking sixth place in league scoring. There were high hopes that Selanne would lead the team this year with his great PP shot, but a slow start sent him down the depth chart. He lost first line duty during an early slump and was replaced by Jagr. Then, the 25-year-old Alexander Frolov outplayed him, forcing the Finnish Flash onto the third line. Even with first powerplay duty and a healthy amount of regular icetime, Selanne has put up ho-hum numbers - 22 goals in 48 games. He's third in team scoring and is only slightly ahead of Brind'Amour who has 20. "It's been a tough season," said Selanne, the frustration written across his face. "I'm getting the shots, but they just don't seem to find the back of the net." Indeed, the veteran always seems to be in the right position to score, but somehow comes up short. "I'm as surprised as you are," said captain Rod Brind'Amour. "He's still getting the chances. His feet are moving - he's getting breakaways - and then, nothing. He'll get it going. You just wait!" In what is likely his last season in the league, it would be nice to see one of the NSHL's classiest players "finnish" in style. ********************************************************************* RAINIERS TO GET NEW DIGS, EMERALD ARENA BREAKS GROUND by Doug Norris, Seattle Rainiers owner Big news in the Seattle sports community came about today, when ground was broken on the new Emerald Arena, the soon-to-be home of the defending Farley Cup champion Rainiers. The Rainiers have been playing in Key Arena since the team's 1996 inception. Located in the popular "Sodo" region of Seattle, the Emerald Arena will be located on the northwest corner of South Holgate Street and 4th Avenue South, just south and east of Safeco Field. Barring construction delays, the arena is expected to open in December of this year. "To put it mildly, we're very excited," said Rainier owner Doug Norris, who took part in the groundbreaking ceremony. "The city [Seattle] has been very accomodating with our needs, and this state-of-the-art facility will help fans get closer to their team." ********************************************************************* 2007-08 ALL-STAR GAME STARTERS (EASTERN CONFERENCE) LEFT WING BRK Alexander Ovechkin 24 CENTRE QCP Daniel Briere 9 BRK Michael Nylander 6 LIB Vincent Lecavalier 4 STM Brad Richards 4 FLO Daymond Langkow 1 RIGHT WING BUF Martin St. Louis 24 LEFT DEFENSE FLO Lubomir Visnovsky 12 QCP Tomas Kaberle 10 MAN Roman Hamrlik 1 SHS Barret Jackman 1 RIGHT DEFENSE LIB Zdeno Chara 11 BUF Dion Phaneuf 10 BRK Mike Commodore 1 LYN Bryan McCabe 1 MAN Michal Rozsival 1 GOAL BRK Olaf Kolzig 19 FLO Ray Emery 5 ********************************************************************* 2007-08 ALL-STAR GAME NOMINEES (WESTERN CONFERENCE) LEFT WING VAW Henrik Zetterberg 9 TPK Zach Parise 8 SEA Patrick Marleau 7 CENTRE SES Jason Spezza 13 NCH Rod Brind'amour 4 VAW Sidney Crosby 3 NEV Pavel Datsyuk 1 SEA Chris Drury 1 PIT Saku Koivu 1 CCC Joe Sakic 1 RIGHT WING FGF Marian Hossa 7 (won tiebreaker) NCH Jaromir Jagr 7 PIT Jarome Iginla 4 SEA Dany Heatley 3 CCC Daniel Alfredsson 2 NEV Bill Guerin 1 LEFT DEFENSE FGF Kimmo Timonen 12 HOU Nicklas Lidstrom 8 SES Ruslan Salei 3 PIT Mattias Norstrom 1 RIGHT DEFENSE SES Dan Boyle 17 PIT Scott Niedermayer 6 SEA Brian Rafalski 1 GOAL FGF Roberto Luongo 17 NCH Miikka Kiprusoff 5 PIT Martin Brodeur 2 ********************************************************************* WEEK ELEVEN/TWELVE RESULTS: North Calgary 3, at Brooklyn 6 BRK Mike Commodore -
