BOTH parties must have their e-mails to me by that point. While I was away in Peru, Brian astutely pointed out that you should be keeping track of the 110% rule. I'll reprise his e-mail here. 4.1. REGULAR SEASON During the NSHL regular season, players are permitted to play no more than 110% of their NHL games played. Any games played over this limit will result in the forfeit of the game by the player's team. Limits may be verified by any owner, although the honor system will be the primary method of enforcing this rule. The maximum usage rule is designed to prevent abuse of players with low playing time." If you are unsure of where the players on your roster currently stand in regards to the 110% rule, now is a good time to check and make any adjustments to ensure you don't go over. Please be aware of this, because violators will be IP'd, which leads to a variety of penalties. Enjoy an excellent newsletter this biweek, featuring the writing talents of George Torres and Lee Yelshin! But first... ********************************************************************* WELCOME TO CHRIS BEDDICK! As of February 1, Chris Beddick is the new owner of the Empire State Americans, poised for their first playoff berth in franchise history. Prior to taking over the Americans, Beddick had been doing an admirable job helping keep the Fort Garry Fiddler Crabs at the top of their division. Chris has already made his mark on the club with three transactions and promises of more to come. Please welcome Chris in the traditional NSHL fashion (usually a series of ridiculously one-sided trade offers). Chris steps in for Steve Beren, who has done great work building a young talented club since its 2002 inception. Steve is one of the most passionate individuals I've come across, which has benefitted him well in this league. As many of you know, one of Steve's other passions is politics, and it's a big year in election circles, so Steve is stepping down to pursue those interests. He will remain as an associate, and I'm sure that we will see him back soon. ********************************************************************* WEEK FIFTEEN/SIXTEEN IN REVIEW: The Buffalo Bulldogs went a perfect 8-0 over Week 15/16, led by thirty-goal scorers Martin St. Louis (37-53-90) and Ilya Kovalchuk (31-37-68). And all of that effort? Gets them a spot fifteen points behind overall league leader Brooklyn in the Northeast Division. The Fourteenth are just that - fourteen points better than any other team in the NSHL, and feature the league's first hundred-point player in sophomore Alexander Ovechkin. One reason for Buffalo's success this year? A perfect 8-0 in shootouts! Out in the Northwest, Nevada and Vancouver have started to push towards the top of the division, with the Thunder just five points back of league-leading Fort Garry. The Seattle Rainiers continue their slide down the ladder. And what do you do when you're pushing towards the top of the division? If you're the Vancouver Whitecaps, you turn over a large portion of your roster! Junu Kim added seven new faces to his roster today, two weeks before the trade deadline. Headline the new Whitecap acquisitions is netminder Niklas Backstrom, who was 14-15-0 with a 2.47 goals-against average and 91.5% save percentage. The rookie goaltender was the fifth-overall selection in last September's entry draft. While the Houston Aeros continue to increase their lead in the Central, the woeful Massasauga completed another "perfect" 0-8 biweek and are now 6-55-3 after sixty-four games. Their 11.7% winning percentage would be the lowest in the history of the NSHL. Minneapolis seems ready to add another talented player to youngsters Anze Kopitar (10-29-39) and Phil Kessel (15-5-20). Speaking of rookie netminders, how about Josh Harding? After making a three-game cameo last season and one game in November, the Montreal Wanderers took the wraps off of Harding in early February, with Harding playing six of Montreal's eight Week 15/16 games. Despite playing for a squad last in the Eastern Conference, Harding's season stats now stand at 5-2-0 with a 1.00 goals against average, 97.1% save percentage and three shutouts. Will Harding take the job from Fredrik Norrena the rest of the way? Time will tell! ********************************************************************* OOPS! HOUNDS GO 7-0-1 AFTER CONCEDING PLAYOFFS WITH TRADES by George Torres, Hampton Roads owner Here were the Hampton Roads Hounds at 28-22-6 and just fallen out of the playoff race losing the number 8 seed and worse yet, the club was aging rapidly and had no scoring bite at all. First goes John-Michael Liles to the North Calgary Hawks for its 1st round pick in this September's draft. Before that, Jason Chimera went to Vancouver for its 2nd round pick, then the crazy GM dealt Nathan Horton a young 22 year old (along with Geoff Platt, and Michael Grabovski) to St Michaels for troublesome Mark Bell, Bryan Pothier, two prospects (Troy Brouwer and Andre Sekeras) and four draft picks (BUF 1, NEV 2, MAN 3, BRK 4) which will take effect next bi-week. Surely, this signaled the end of contending status and back to the drawing board mode for the aging Hounds with Mike Rathje, Keith Carney, Glen Murray, Owen Nolan, Jozef Stumpel, Bryan Smolinski, and Ian LaPerriere approaching 35 or there with Carney at 38. Paul Kariya, and Randy Robitaille and Johan Hedberg not far behind. Then, a strange thing happened. The Hounds had its best bi-week ever going 7-0-1 losing a shootout at home to Stone Harbor, but running the table the rest of the way. Coincidence? I think not. Except for Capital City, the remaining clubs had losing records and so the Hounds were able to put together a very good streak. The Hounds are not an elite level team as they were last season. They are in the middle of the pack and with age concerns, management decided to concede the race this season and start rebuilding for another run in a few years. Losing Nathan Horton was really tough, but getting two prospects such as Brouwer (who I saw In Norfolk last season) and Sekeras plus the four picks give us hope for the future. Pothier gives us immediate help at RD this year and depth next year. Bell, oh well he was great as a Norfolk Admiral 7 years ago. The Hounds have three picks in the first round, three in the second, two in the third, and two in the fourth. Hopefully we can score some future players with these 10 picks. The last draft brought us Joe Pavelski in the first round, Michael Grabovski in the second (a bust IMO), Tom Gilbert in the third who will start at RD (I hope) next season and David Clarkson in the fourth who could be on my checking or energy line. Didn't turn out too bad. Did we pull the plug too early? Maybe, but as a rising six year vet of this great league I plan to be around to start over and be here a few years down the road we'll see how it turns out. Someone once said that the road to success is always under construction. Wish I could remember who? ********************************************************************* LOGJAM IN THE EAST by Lee Yelshin, Manayunk owner The standings for weeks 13 and 14 in the Eastern Conference revealed a very interesting situation: a three-way tie for fourth place in the standings, with the seventh place team only one point behind. St. Michaels, Florida, and Long Island each had sixty-one points, followed by Manayunk with sixty. This knot was somewhat isolated from the rest of the East, with the three tied teams eight points behind Quebec City at the top of the Atlantic, and with Manayunk leading Corner Creek by six. So weeks 15 and 16 could be make-or-break time for playoff slots, with much to be gained by teams willing to seize their destiny. The Hellcats had the greatest influence over their situation, as they had a home-and-home with both the Privateers and the Bullies. Half of Florida's games would be with its closest rivals. St. Michaels and Manayunk just had the home-and-home with Florida, while the Berserkers did not have a game scheduled with any of the other three. Well, there really wasn't a lot of seizing, but it was a very interesting two weeks. Florida made the most of what they were handed, beating St. Michaels twice and splitting the pair with Manayunk. The Hellcats racked up a 4-3-1 record for nine points, with three of the wins and an overtime loss on the road. Interestingly, the Bullies also wound up 4-3-1, and with three wins and an overtime loss on the road. It took a shootout for Manayunk to gain two points at home for its four games. Next in the standings will be the Privateers, who really haven't lost much ground with a 2-5-1 record for five points. But the long faces belong to Long Island, who picked up three points with a 1-6-1 record. But there's eighteen games left in the season, thirty-six potential points. That's probably nowhere near enough to catch Brooklyn, but there's plenty of room to contest the remaining seven playoff slots. This could be a barn-burner of a finish! ********************************************************************* RAINIERS CONTINUE TO TUMBLE DOWN THE MOUNTAIN by Doug Norris, Seattle Rainiers owner With two weeks to go before the 2008 trade deadline, the defending champion Seattle Rainiers find themselves in an unusual position. And not a particularly comfortable one. Seven points out in their division, the Rainiers are just two points above eighth seed in the Western Conference. And so the club management must decide - are they buyers or sellers? If buying, the club has definite needs. Dwayne Roloson and Vesa Toskala aren't performing up to the level shown last spring. Beyond Ed Jovanovski and Brian Rafalski, the blueline lacks from another Cup-level defenseman. And after the trade of Mike Sillinger earlier in the campaign, the Rainiers find the need for another two-way pivot. On the other hand, if the Rainiers decide to cash in their chips, who goes? Jovanovski could fetch a pretty price, as could Jaroslav Spacek. Up front, teams have expressed interest in Mark Parrish, Alex Tanguay and Andrew Brunette. So what will happen in the Emerald City this spring? Wait two weeks for a sneak peek. ********************************************************************* WEEK FIFTEEN/SIXTEEN RESULTS: Lyndonville 1, at Brooklyn 3 BRK Michael Nylander - two power-play goals, takeaway BRK Olaf Kolzig - The Bulldogs were perfect this week, with their only sin being in the same division as the Brooklyn Fourteenth. Helping out in a big way this biweek is sophomore defenseman Phaneuf, the first blueliner to take home POTW honours in 2007-08. Two goals plus twelve assists helped get Phaneuf to a plus-nine in Week 15/16 for the minute muncher, who also contributed five takeaways and eight hits to the Buffalo cause. +/- SOG G A PIM PP SH FO-W AC IT TA HIT SP AS 01/30 at NCH 2 2 1 2 0 0 0 0-0 45 25:19 0 3 0 2 01/31 at CGC -1 1 0 1 2 0 0 0-0 46 26:04 0 1 0 1 02/02 vs CGC 0 0 0 0 2 0 0 0-0 38 20:59 0 0 0 1 02/04 at ESA 2 3 0 1 0 0 0 0-0 50 29:09 1 0 1 3 02/05 at LIB 1 1 0 2 0 0 0 0-0 45 25:15 1 1 1 2 02/07 vs ESA 1 4 0 1 4 0 0 0-0 36 20:50 1 0 3 3 02/08 vs LIB 1 5 1 2 0 1 0 0-0 48 27:51 1 2 1 2 02/11 vs FGF 3 4 0 3 2 0 0 0-0 44 25:27 1 1 0 2 Week 15/16 finalists include Nevada's Pavel Datsyuk, Vancouver's Henrik Zetterberg, and Marc Savard, newly of the Seattle Sasquatch. 2007-08 NSHL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK: October 31: Daymond Langkow, Florida November 14: Henrik Zetterberg, Vancouver November 28: Jarome Iginla, Pittsburgh December 12: Alexander Ovechkin, Brooklyn December 26: Mats Sundin, Houston January 16: Daniel Alfredsson, Capital City January 30: Daniel Sedin, Corner Creek February 13: Dion Phaneuf, Buffalo ********************************************************************* GOALTENDER OF THE WEEK (WEEK 15/16): Josh Harding, Montreal.
