Who's the biggest name? That just might depend on what happens over the next few months. Chris Beddick also announced this biweek that his Americans will be relocating to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and will be known as the "Hornets", in recognition of the longstanding minor league franchise in that town. If there is no relocation or realignment, this would put Pittsburgh's two franchises in separate conferences (not that there's anything wrong with that). If you're thinking of relocating, please let me know what you're planning, so that I can have these things in the back of my head instead of focusing on work and whatnot. And if you're interested in realigning, please let me know when you can. How's everyone doing with the 110% rule? An excellent newsletter this biweek with some great articles from Doug North (pre-All Star festivities), Jason McCorrister, Brian Leahy, Mike Kuduk, and Rob Ryan. Enjoy, and good luck the rest of the way! ********************************************************************* WEEK SEVENTEEN/EIGHTEEN IN REVIEW: The Corner Creek Green Calves are back at 0.500! After going 7-1 in Week 17/18, the Calves have overtaken Empire State and now hold a five-point margin over the Americans for the eighth and final playoff spot in the East. Speaking of the playoffs, does anyone in the Atlantic Division want to be there? The six clubs combined for just twenty-nine points, an aggregate winning percentage of 30.2%, and were "led" by the "perfect" performance of the Montreal Wanderers. The Wanderers dropped all eight of their games, and are now the first team in the East to be officially eliminated from Farley Cup contention. The Topeka Tarantulas may be out of the playoffs, but don't tell that to goaltender Ed Belfour. Belfour stopped forty-seven Nevada shots (10/10 GR) in a 5-0 shutout victory over the Thunder. Pittsburgh's Martin Brodeur still has playoff aspirations, which he showed in a 2-0 38-save shutout of the defending champ Rainiers on February 15. The Privateers' Antoine Vermette had a Gordie Howe hat trick in the club's February 20 game against Buffalo, finishing things by squaring off with sniper Ilya Kovalchuk. NSHL Challenge - are there any other Howe hat tricks in the league's history? Let me know! On February 25th, league leader Brooklyn had a 4-0 lead over St. Michael's with just seventeen minutes left. Then Antoine Vermette scored. Then Branko Radivojevic and Brad Richards scored. Then Filip Kuba scored. Then Dan Hinote scored, sealing a 5-4 come-from-behind victory for the Privateers, who notched five third-period tallies! The same night, the Seattle Rainiers were hosting Topeka, and Dany Heatley showed why he's one of the game's premier players. Heatley scored five times for the Rainiers, adding two assists, and was plus-six in Seattle's 8-1 win. Along with Andy McDonald and Patrick Marleau, the Rainiers' line combined for sixteen points! ********************************************************************* 2008 YOUNG STARS GAME: by Doug North TOPEKA- The 2008 AllStar Weekend began this evening (the 28th anniversary of the Miracle on Ice!!!) in the Topeka Expocenter with the Young Stars game. (When I put these teams together I tried to represent as many teams as I could while covering all positions. I tried to get players who had been drafted within the last two years.) Things started slow but the scoring heated up as the game went along. The line of Wolski, Crosby and Perry combined for 12 points and lead the West to a 7-4 win over the East. The game was dominated by the goalies in the first 30 minutes. When Backstrom and Lunqvist exited, the West lead 2-1 but found themselves shorthanded on a penalty by Phil Kessel. (BTW all teams played 3/3 and there was no intimidation to try and simulate an all star game atmosphere. I did accidently click yes on 2 INT but neither resulted in a takeaway or penalty......sorry.......habit!!!!!!!). Enter Norrena and Halak...........open the floodgates!!!!!! Alex Ovechkin scored on the ensuing power play to tie the game at two. Three more goals were scored in the period and the West took a 4-3 lead after two periods. The East's Michel Ouellet tied the game early in the third. Corey Perry then scored two straight goals and Sid the Kid delivered the knockout punch for the 7-4 win. The East outshot the West 45-44. The starting goalies faced a total of 5 GR's.........the subs faced a total of 15 and only stopped 7. Burns and Suter were a +5........their defensive counterparts (Meszaros and Whitney) were a -5. ********************************************************************* EASTERN CONFERENCE ALL-STARS VS. SEATTLE RAINIERS by Doug North Years ago, the defending Stanley Cup champs would play the NHL allstars. When I was selected to host the 2008 NSHL All Star Game, I thought it'd be fun to do the same. Tonight the Eastern Conference All Star took on the 2006-07 Farley Cup Champion Seattle Rainiers. I used the CM sent by Jeff for the All Star game and Doug Norris sent me a CM from his cup winning team from last year. While playing this game, one thing kept entering my mind.....the scene in Rocky IV when Ivan Drago (the Rainiers) took on Apollo Creed (the EC All Stars). Chris Drury opened the scoring on the power play (get used to this term). Dany Heatley scored a power play goal at the end of the first period to give Seattle a 2-0 lead. I could just see Jeff Tsuruoka yelling at Doug Norris from the bench........."WHAT'S THE MATTER WITH YOU!!!! THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE AN EXHIBITION!!!!!" just like Apollo's trainer did in the movie!!!!! Norris was unfazed and Heatley scored ANOTHER power play goal at the beginning of the second period to give the Rainiers a 3-0 lead. Drago was ready to land the knockout blow while Coach Tsuruoka was heard yelling to his assistant coach to "THROW THE DAMN TOWEL"!!!!!! Just like in the movie, the towel was not thrown. Unlike Apollo Creed, the EC AllStars came off the canvas and started throwing haymakers to get back into the game!!!!!! Marc Savard scored on a....you guessed it....power play to make it 3-1. Martin St. Louis scored 3 1/2 minutes later (the first even strength goal of the game) to make it 3-2 after two periods. After failing to convert on an early third period power play, the EC AllStars got another PP opportunity when Jaroslav Spacek was called for tripping. Mike Knuble took advantage and tied the game at 3. Spacek was sent to the box again at the end of regualtion but the AllStars could not convert and this exhibition was going to OT. A la Ivan Drago, it was Dany Heatley who said, "YOU WILL LOSE" as with just over 2 minutes to go in OT, he scored his third goal of the game to win it 4-3. Drury was credited with an assist giving him a four point night. Seventeen penalties called in this game including a 10 misconduct to Mike Commodore. There were 10 PP opportunities with 5 PP goals scored. Seattle will go for the sweep tomorrow night when they take on Brian Leahy's Western Conferecne All Stars. ********************************************************************* WESTERN CONFERENCE ALL-STARS VS. SEATTLE RAINIERS by Doug North It doesn't get more even than this. Not only did each team have 36 shots, they had the exact number of shots in each period!!!! Both teams went 0-5 on the power play and each team also had 8 GR's. The game winner was scored by Dany Heatley.......of the Western Conference All Stars in their 3-1 win over the 2007 Farley Cup winners, the Seattle Rainiers. Seattle split the series 1-1. Roberto Luongo was stellar stopping all 8 GRs and only allowed a shorthanded goal by Mike Fisher. Jason Spezza of the WC scored the first and third goals of the game. The AllStar Weekend concludes tomorrow night with the NSHL All Star Game. ********************************************************************* FORMER HAWKS HOLD PRESS CONFERENCE by Jason McCorrister, North Calgary owner Somehow Hawks fans caught wind of the press conference and marched on The Nest hours before even the media circus could get there. Moreover, they dressed in black, many with eyes full of tears. "This sucks," spat a young man whose black shirt had the #17 painted on the back. Brind'Amour sat in his familiar spot at center with Selanne to his right and Jagr to his left with both Zubov and Orpik playing the outside. Five skaters, and as good a line as one can find in the NSHL, their faces were a mixture of disappointment and frustration. All five were facing the media for the first time to answer questions about their trades out of North Calgary. Jagr's brow was lowered. He glared at the reporters and one could sensea tinge of annoyance in his voice. After all, how could a team trade a guy in the thick of the scoring race? The notoriously selfish and mercurial winger quipped, "I did my best and they still traded me. Life goes on." Selanne, the perennial gentleman, spoke sheepishly about wishing they could have won it all the year before. "It's tough when you miss your chance," said Selanne. Sadly, Teemu missed far too many chances this year. When the Hawks needed him most, he'd hit a crossbar or disappear completely. Then the Captain took the mic. His voice was shaky - no doubt he was fighting to hold down his emotions and trying not to break down as so many players do when they are told they are leaving the team they played so passionately for. "Well, what can I say?" said Brind'Amour. "We had a good run here in Calgary. Last year was amazing. We felt like we had a team that could win it all and we started out this season thinking we could get back there again." "It's simple, ya know. We wouldn't be sitting here today if we'd done our jobs right. We should be at the rink right now getting geared up for another run at the cup, but as it is the team is in a meeting getting introduced to the new guys. Mostly, I guess I feel bad for the fans. They've been great to us and they deserved better." The Hawks continue to battle for the final playoff spot in the west. However, with morale dipping to an all-time low and with the loss of its top veterans, especially the trading of the heart and soul of the team - captain Rod Brind'Amour, it is likely that it won't be until next season that the team regroups. "I talked to Spezz last night," says Brind'Amour. "I wanted to wish him luck and to let him know that Calgary will be a great city and a great team for him. He's a talented young player and he's got a chance to make a difference for this club." That's Brind'Amour: a class act to the end. ********************************************************************* COUGARS STAND PAT AT TRADE DEADLINE; FOCUS ON PLAYOFF PUSH by Brian Leahy, Capital City owner (AP) LINCOLN, NEBRASKA.....With just ten games remaining in the regular season schedule, the Cougars find themselves teetering on the line between making and missing the NSHL playoffs. Just a little over a month ago, Capital City sat atop the Western Conference standings, clinching the spot for Brian Leahy to coach at the All-Star Game. "We hit a rough patch recently, no doubt," said Leahy. "But, if you look at the standings for our conference, there isn't really too much that separates the 1st seed from the 8th seed. We've got to worry about the teams in front of us on the ice right now and not the teams in front of us in the standings. If we play like I know we're capable of playing, we'll be all right." With the trade deadline recently passing, the Cougars didn't make any noise. GM Brian Leahy said that there were a few inquiries and some minor discussion, but none close to any semblance of a deal. "I just didn't see a piece to the puzzle out there that I felt could put our team over the top without hurting our playoff push at the same time," Leahy said. "I really think this group of guys can go far and I didn't want to disrupt that too much." Leahy did make some minor moves a few weeks back, trading for original Cougars captain Eric Lindros, a key member of the 1997 Cup winning team. Though Lindros has been on injured reserve for some time, he is aiming to play in the regular season finale and be available to the team for the playoffs, provided they qualify. Forwards Andre Roy and Martin St. Pierre, as well as defenseman Dan Syvret also joined the team. They each played several games upon joining the roster before being sent down to Bridgeport (AHL). With this being trade deadline week, we thought we would re-visit the franchise's best and worst trades: BEST TRADE June 30, 2004: Traded forwards Justin Mapletoft, Mike LeClerc and CCC 2004 #5 (Todd Rohloff) to the Brooklyn Fourteenth in exchange for forward Vyacheslav Kozlov. Comment: Kozlov has been a mainstay on the Cougars offense, with 20+ goal seasons in each of his three seasons thus far with the club. May 9, 2006: Traded MAN 2006 #1 (Alex Steen) and CCC 2006 #2 (Andrew Ladd) to the Topeka Tarantulas in exchange for forwards Joe Sakic, Daniel Alfredsson, Eric Belanger and Martin Rucinsky. Comment: While the thought of having prospects Steen and Ladd on the roster is nice, Joe Sakic and Daniel Alfredsson have been 1-2 on the team in scoring over the past two seasons. Belanger and Rucinsky are solid contributors as well. WORST TRADE February 12, 2007: Traded CCC 2007 #1 (Ladislav Smid) to the Buffalo Bulldogs in exchange for forwards Mario Lemieux and Greg Johnson. Comment: With both Lemieux and Johnson retiring after the season last year, the deal was definitely made with the 2007 NSHL playoffs in mind. Unfortunately, after getting bounced in the 2nd round by the Seattle Rainiers, the Cougars found themselves idle during the 1st round of the draft. NEWS & NOTES Daniel Alfredsson eclipsed the 40 goal mark this past bi-week and Manny Legace captured his 20th win. Joe Sakic notched his 30th goal of the season and is just 2 points shy of 100 for the year. Pavol Demitra and Markus Naslund are both sitting one goal short of 20. ********************************************************************* AEROS STAND PAT by Michael Kuduk, Houston owner Despite some criticism from some fans, the Aeros have decided to stand pat with their lineup headed into the final 10 games of the season, even as the teams behind them in the standings were dealing furiously just before the trade deadline. "Our record since the first of the year is 26-6, and that includes a 4-4 performance over the past 8 games in which we totally forgot how to put the puck in the net on the road," said Houston GM Mike Kuduk. "My feeling is that if something isn't broken, then don't fix it. I'd like to think that our good play and level of talent is forcing our opposition to trade to try to match us. We have a good group of players now, and we will have a good group of players next year. Our succession plan is set, with talented youngsters set to take the reins from some of our older players when they retire. So no, I don't see us mortgaging our future for a few spare parts next year. I'll let our opponents do just that. Besides, mortgage rates are just too high in the NSHL." When asked if Coach Tippett had any requests, Mike said, "Yes, he wants his players healthy. Chris Pronger had been out a lot, and we miss his physical presence on the blueline, along with his prowess on the power play. The last time he was hurt, we were offered a big package to trade him, but we just can't do that. Shane Doan was out against Nevada, and that probably cost us the game, as plays a shutdown game against his opponent. We needed the Thunder to score one less goal then they did." And what on earth happened over the last bi-week? "We allowed our opponents to get us out of our rhythm, and we forgot what we were supposed to do with the puck. Getting shut out twice this past biweek was unpleasant, especially after averaging 5 goals a game on the road, but if we're going to get that sort of thing out of our system, it's best to do it now before the playoffs start." When I asked if there was any truth to the rumor that any more games would be played at the Astrodome, Mike snarled, "We're 0-2 there this year. This time of year, I'll leave that arena to the bronc riders and George Strait." ********************************************************************* HELLCATS POSSIBLY TRADE OUT OF PLAYOFFS by Robert Ryan, Florida owner The Florida Hellcats have taken a back seat in the playoff race by trading forwards Jason Williams, Chris Clark and Jochen Hecht. Hecht, probably the most consistent all-around player of the three, was traded to the Quebec City Patriotes for youngsters Matt Stajan and David Booth. Both players coming to South Florida will get lots of ice time in replacing the forwards that left. Williams was traded to the North Calgary Hawks for a 3rd and 4th round pick in the upcoming 2008 draft, and Clark was traded to the Vancouver Whitecaps for center Dan Fritsche. "Wow, just looking at it on paper it seems we lost a lot of experience, and we did, but the players we got in return should be with us for a long time and they are all highly respected in the NSHL. Plus, having the two picks to go along with it, that put us back in the draft. We had traded away some picks before," Rob Ryan, team president and general manager, said. Florida's new look for the future in 2008-2009 will boast a top line of Vaclav Prospal on left wing, Daymond Langkow at center and right winger Brad Boyes. The second line should be Chris Kunitz on left, Brandon Dubinsky at center and Booth at right. Gratton should be the 3rd pivot with Chad Larose and Eric Perrin manning the wings and Fritsche, Ryan Clowe, Brandon Bochenski, Matt Bradley and Ryan Callahan all will vie for spot duty on the top three lines or 4th line duty. On defense the Hellcats will be set with a good, solid nucleus of Lubomir Visnovsky, Jason Smith, Chris Phillips and Christian Ehrhoff. The 5th and 6th spots will be filled with the likes of Rob Scuderi, Doug Janik, Niclas Wallin, Jeff Woywitka and others. Goaltending will be the weak point with Ray Emery coming off his worst season ever and inexperienced Jason Bacashihua and Jaroslav Halak to back him up. A goaltender will be a priority in the draft and if there are none that fit the bill a trade will most likely happen. "Trading our number one pick for a proven goalie would not be out of the question," Ryan said. "It's funny, a few years ago we had some of the greatest goalies in Marty Turco, Dwayne Roloson, Henrik Lundqvist and others. Where are they now?" Ryan smiled. "They are all gone and we are stuck holding the bag. Hopefully some of the new draft picks we bring in can help us right away." Florida had 70 points and held fourth place in the Eastern Conference going into this bi-week but then lost every game except one (against Lyndonville) and only come away with 4 points. That is before they made the trades which would seem to weaken the team. "I hope we can somehow limp into the playoffs and surprise a team or two", Ryan beamed. "If not, I am happy with the trades we made and we feel like we improved the team for the long haul. I don't think we could have stood pat. I thought about trading our number one next year to get a player or two but I felt like it was an uphill battle to try and win the Farley Cup this year. It can always be done with heart but we need talent too and I just didn't think it was worth mortgaging the future for something iffy. That being said, I wish our team luck in the playoffs if we can get there." ********************************************************************* PANIC SESSION NETS HOLMSTROM by Doug Norris, Seattle Rainiers owner Ordinarily, Seattle Rainiers management are somewhat averse to trades. Although statistics of this type are not readily available, the team is surely near the bottom in terms of trade frequency, and they always conduct meticulous research beforehand. So when the St. Michael's Privateers contacted owner Norris a mere ten minutes before the deadline suggesting a deal for Holmstrom, obviously Norris said "no", right? "Yeah, I'm not sure what happened there," joked Norris. "We're very excited to add another power forward to our roster in Holmstrom, and we're hoping that it will get us pointed in the right direction." The defending Cup champion Rainiers have been in a months-long malaise, having trouble keeping the puck out of the net. The acquisition of Holmstrom - for a second-rounder in 2008 - instead of a star goaltender or defensemen signifies that Seattle will apparently attempt to outscore clubs. The efficacy of this strategy will be known in May and June. Practice lines for the club Wednesday: Alex Tanguay - Chris Drury - Dany Heatley Tomas Holmstrom - Patrick Marleau - Mike Fisher Andrew Brunette - Andy McDonald - Jonathan Cheechoo Wojtek Wolski - Stephen Weiss - Mark Parrish ********************************************************************* WEEK SEVENTEEN/EIGHTEEN RESULTS: St. Michael's 1, at Brooklyn 5 BRK Jocelyn Thibault - twenty-nine saves, 11/12 GR BRK Michael Nylander -
