These games are due by the end of THIS Sunday (March 16), although the sooner the better. I leave for Phoenix the evening of the 16th, and will be gone through the following Thursday. I will be at a conference, so I will not have much time to work on newsletters during that period. And the playoffs don't start until the next newsletter is out! We've already had some people violate the 110% usage rule. Please keep an eye on it for your team - thanks. Enjoy the newsletter this week - a great article from Lee on the tight race in the Eastern Conference! ********************************************************************* WEEK NINETEEN/TWENTY IN REVIEW: And we're down to it! Two games left to play for everyone, with at least a few more games for sixteen franchises. And those sixteen know who they are now - all Farley Cup invitations have been mailed, and teams are printing tickets as we speak. The Buffalo Bulldogs put up a valiant fight, but will finish third in the Eastern Conference, falling short to the very impressive 126 points put up by Brooklyn. I don't know what the league records are for shots on goal in a single game, but the sixty-one by Houston against Minneapolis on March 2 has to be right up there. Eleven goals ain't so shabby, either, for the club who's in fifth gear for the playoff run. ********************************************************************* IT'S TOUGH TO BREAK FROM THE PACK by Lee Yelshin, Manayunk owner It happened again at the end of weeks 17-18. The last five playoff slots (and the identity of Brooklyn's first playoff vicitm) in the Eastern Conference were up for grabs. Long Island, Florida, and Manayunk were all tied with 74 points. St. Michaels was just two points ahead, and Corner Creek two points behind. The last full biweek of the season could present the last chance for one of these teams to make a move. And some of these games were going to be up close and personal. The Privateers and the Bullies had a home-and-home scheduled, as did the Berserkers and the Green Calves. The Hellcats also came up for a visit to Manayunk. It was the Hellcats who decided they had to have a home-ice berth in the first round, winning seven of their eight games, including the road game against the Bullies. Florida's only loss was to the Central Division's Capital City Cougars. The fourteen points gave them a total of 88 at the end of weeks 19-20. It is possible for the Privateers and the Berserkers to catch the Hellcats after the last two games of season, but the odds are looking rather long. For their part, St. Michaels ended up three points behind Florida at 85, thanks to a 4-3-1 biweek. The Privateers split a home-and-home with the Bullies and Quebec City. Just one point behind, at 84, is Long Island. The Berserkers were 5-3-0, and they also split two home-and-home series, with the Calves and Lyndonville. That brings me to my Bullies. Manayunk copied the Privateers 4-3-1 record, ending at 83 points. Against the other teams featured here, we were 1-1-1. The Bullies did sweep a home-and-home with Montreal, though. And that brings us to Corner Creek. Their 3-4-1 record was just below .500, and their 79 points gives them a just possible chance to tie Manayunk. So how did we wind up? Some extra checking shows that the #2 slot in the playoffs is up for grabs. Florida's 88 points is just four behind Quebec at the top of the Atlantic, who had a dismal 2-6-0 biweek. The Commish may need to check who has the advantage in a tiebreaker between these two teams. If both of these teams fail to win any of their last two games, the Privateers could steal the Atlantic from them. As for Long Island, in the Northeast, the best they can get is the #4 seed, if they edge out St. Michaels, Florida drops their last two, AND the Privateers beat the Hellcats in the tiebreaker. That's all? The Bullies wind up in the #7 spot, with a long shot at leaping over St. Michaels and Long Island. Can we consider the Green Calves a lock for the 8th spot? They, too, can wind up tied with Manayunk if the Calves win their last two, and the Bullies drop theirs. Did Empire State or Lyndonville make a grab for that last playoff spot? Each team needed almost perfect biweeks to catch up to the Calves. I don't think that happened. It looks like it's Florida, St. Michaels, Long Island, Manayunk, then Corner Creek. But the three teams in the middle are separated by one or two points with two games left. Who wants to set the odds for this one? ********************************************************************* RAINIERS SLOW TO CRAWL AS POSTSEASON NEARS by Doug Norris, Seattle Rainiers owner With the Farley Cup playoffs just a week away, the Seattle Rainiers fell back of the pack in the Western Conference and are now without home ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs. Not that that's a bad thing, because the Rainiers no longer seem able to win at the "friendly confines" of Key Arena. Of the eight clubs in the conference playoff mix, only Hampton Roads has fewer home points than the Rainiers, who are 24-15-0-1 on home ice. Things were not helped by dropping three consecutive home games in Week 19/20 before recovering somewhat against North Calgary. "Yeah, those points would help," said coach Doug Norris at the team's weekly press conference Monday. "Hopefully things even out over the course of the year, because if that's the case, then we're in for an exciting playoff." A large part of the problem - to be frank - is the Key Arena crowd. After taking home the Farley Cup last spring, many fans expected the team to roar out of the gates, and while the team has remained in contention all year, the faithful has been left wanting. The team's consecutive sellout streak still dates back to March of 2002, but some suggest that sponsors have been "helping" the streak along. Moreover, two of the club's top four defensemen - Ed Jovanovski and Chris Chelios - are down for the count; Jovanovski with a back injury and Chelios with a knee injury. Neither are expected back until late in the first round - if the team lasts that long. ********************************************************************* WEEK NINETEEN/TWENTY RESULTS: Fort Garry 0, at Brooklyn 6 BRK Brendan Morrison -
