The defending Farley Cup champion Brooklyn Fourteenth will begin the year in Sweden, playing a matinee at Corner Creek before flying to Buffalo for a game the following night against the Bulldogs. "Might as well get this trip out of the way early," joked forward Scott Walker. The Fourteenth play three consecutive road games before raising their banner on October 12 in a game against the previous Cup champions, the Seattle Rainiers. Says Olaf Kolzig - "We had to watch them win it [when the Rainiers beat Brooklyn in the 2007 Finals], so turnabout is fair play, I guess." The newly-relocated Pittsburgh Hornets welcome the Long Island Berserkers to the Steel City on opening night. The Hornets play their new crosstown rivals, the Sound Chasers, twice in 2008-89, first on November 21 and then on February 9. The Sound Chasers just might open their season against this September's first-overall draft choice, Minneapolis goaltender Carey Price. Price has wowed in training camp and shows every indication that he'll be the Massasauga's messiah as soon as next week. He will have to beat out #1 waiver draft choice Dan Ellis, who has also played well. ********************************************************************* REMINDERS: Don't forget that you must be at a maximum of thirty-six players by the end of this coming Monday. The remainder of these reminders will be repeated in next week's newsletter. If you have any questions about how to handle things, the easiest thing to do is ASK. (Actually, the easiest thing to do is just to do whatever it is you want to do anyhow, but I'd prefer that you ASK instead.) I'm online probably 14 hours per day. Also, the New Owner/Associate FAQ is a good reference; it is mentioned later in this section of the newsletter, so please read it. Strategy files are due by the end of the first Thursday of each biweek, or thirty-six hours after the newsletter release (whichever is later). Incentive Points will be applied if necessary. Don't forget to tell me your 2008-09 lock code if you're planning on using one. This is also an IPable offense, and since I won't find out about your non-compliance until it's an emergency (the only reason I need your lock code), I probably won't be in the best of moods. Not a good time to be in a position to receive IP, as you might imagine. Forwards rated "Point **" are allowed to play the point on either the first power-play unit or the second power-play unit (but not both). Forwards rated "Point *" are allowed to play the point on the second power-play unit only. Also, forwards may not play the point on one power-play unit and forward on the other. Don't forget the new usage rules as passed in this summer's constitutional balloting! The amendment involves third-period defenseman usage, and states that all defensemen must play one shift within the first three scheduled shifts. Also, don't forget that I can now apply incentive points pretty much whenever I want to apply them. So be a good owner, por favor! I do spot-check computer managers to make sure that things are being done within the rules, but this is mainly in case you need assistance with something. Thank you for helping me to help you! Also, READ THIS ENTIRE DOCUMENT: http://math.colorado.edu/~norrisdt/newownerfaq.html If you have suggestions for how to improve this document, please contact me directly. Thank you! ********************************************************************* 2008 CAPITAL CITY CLASSIC TOURNEY A SUCCESS by Brian Leahy, Capital City owner (AP) LINCOLN, NEBRASKA.....This past Saturday, the 7th annual Capital City Classic Invitational Tournament came to a close. Once again, it proved to be a successful pre-season event and a good measuring stick for those teams involved. In the tournament finale, the St. Michael's Privateers edged the host Capital City Cougars by a 3-2 score in overtime. Privateers pivot Pavel Datsyuk was named tournament MVP and the event saw yet another squad win it all for the first time. Almost a complete sweep in post-tournament awards, Datsyuk also took home the Mike Bossy Award for best forward; netminder Tim Thomas won the Billy Smith Award for best goaltender. Joe Corvo, defensive stalwart for the runner-up Cougars took home the Denis Potvin Award for best defenseman. For a complete tournament summary, including box scores, statistics and All-Tournament teams, please visit the 2008 CCCI Tournament web site at http://capcity.tripod.com/CCCI/index08.html. Previous tournament results: 2007 - Champion: Vancouver Whitecaps, Runner-up: Seattle Rainiers 2006 - Champion: North Calgary Hawks, Runner-up: Seattle Rainiers 2004 - Champion: Quebec City Patriotes, Runner-up: Capital City Cougars 2003 - Champion: Buffalo Bulldogs, Runner-up: Toms River Lightning 2002 - Champion: Toms River Lightning, Runner-up: Seattle Rainiers 1999 - Champion: Seattle Rainiers, Runner-up: Lyndonville Blades ********************************************************************* PRIVATEERS BRING 2008 CCCI CUP TO ST. MICHAEL'S by Andy Bartalone, St. Michael's owner On a September afternoon in the Fur, Feathers and Fins Tavern on Light Street, a common conversation between Privateers fans goes something like this; Fan #1; Well, they are out in the Midwest; are they going to blow it again? Fan #2: *blank stare* Of course they are, they never come out of the gate strong and this is just our warning as to how bad its going to be. When St. Michaels went 6-2 and beat hosts Cap City in the final, in overtime, noone was more surprised than the hometown fans. Newly acquired Pavel Datsyuk did not disapoint, 7 goals and 2 points per game and long-time Privateer JP Dumont, 13 assists and 2 points per game. Fourth line Dan Hinote, Derek Armstrong and Scott Thornton kicked in thier part going +3 for the tournament, best on the team for forwards. On the defense, Andrej Meszaros and newly acquired Mike Mottau chipped in 3 goals each, and the defense supplied 17 assists. Tim Thomas was stellar in net posting a 2.99 GAA. The rumblings going on in grocery stores and Home Depot, in gas stations and corner bars, between Bankers and Longshoremen are strong, it feels like March in St. Michaels, there is a buzz going on everywhere. If you have a spare 20.00 on a game night, I suggest you find a seat at The Cove, where the things will certainly be fun. ********************************************************************* COUGARS CORE GETTING OLDER, BUT STILL DETERMINED by Brian Leahy, Capital City owner (AP) LINCOLN, NEBRASKA.....While the average age of the Cougars roster heading into training camp, at 31 years old, was the same as this time last year, the core group is another year older. Nevertheless, they are hoping to improve upon a 48-win season in 2007-08 that saw them exit the playoffs early in a 4-1 series loss to Nevada. Forwards Daniel Alfredsson, Joe Sakic, Pavol Demitra, Markus Naslund, Slava Kozlov and Daniel Cleary are back and expected to provide a bulk of the offense for the team this year. Added to the mix is draft day acquisition John Madden from the Brooklyn Fourteenth. Madden, who Capital City had been interested in acquiring previously, should add good balance - most likely as the team's 2nd line center. A few other entry and waiver draft pickups are hoping to crack the regular lineup as training camp winds down. On defense, Joe Corvo, Mathieu Schneider, Andy Sutton and Jan Hedja are expected to play key roles for the club. Greg Zanon is coming into his own and a few others should help provide depth for the team and keep the defense strong and the puck out of the Cougars zone. Between the pipes, it appears that Manny Legace, back for his 4th season with the club, has won the starting job out of training camp. While Marty Turco is expected to be his more-than-capable backup, rookie Jonas Hiller is also expected to get his share of games in the upcoming season. Hiller, a 2008 NSHL entry draft 1st round selection (17th overall) for the Cougars, performed well in the recently completed CCCI pre-season tournament. The young netminder played in two of the team's six round-robin games, winning both and coming away with a 2.00 goals against average and a .931 save percentage. NEWS & NOTES The Cougars play will hold their annual training camp Black and Gold scrimmage this Sunday, October 5th at Cougar Coliseum starting at 1 PM.....In addition to the average age of those in training camp being 31 years of age, the average height is 6'0" and average weight is 197 lbs.....Of the players in camp, there are 20 Canadians, 11 Americans, 3 Swedes, 2 Czechs, 1 Russian, 1 Slovak and 1 Swiss. ********************************************************************* RAINIERS' CAMP NEARS A CLOSE, "TOUGH" ROSTER CUTS AHEAD by Doug Norris, Seattle Rainiers owner The annual highlight of the Rainiers' training camp turned into a disaster, as the team took last place at the 2008 Capital City Classic Invitational. Presumptive starter Vesa Toskala sported a dismal 87.2% save percentage as the club was outscored 26-15 in six games. "Our defensive play simply has to get better if we want to skate at the NSHL level," said coach Doug Norris. Not a single Rainier finished higher than plus-one in the tournament. On the bright side, winger Jonathan Cheechoo erupted for five goals in the six games, giving hope that his troubled 2007-08 season is behind him. Competition is particularly fierce up front for the Rainiers, with J-F Jacques, Colin Fraser, Connor James and Rob Globke trying to stick with the big club. "We've got some tough decisions ahead," said Norris. Defenseman Tim Conboy reportedly has been shopped around by the club. Rumours that the team would acquire North Calgary goaltender Andrew Raycroft appear to be just that - rumours. ********************************************************************* 2007 DRAFT REVISITED by Dean Engemoen, associate (Dean hasn't reviewed the 2008 draft, but here's a revisit of his 2007 work) 2007 DRAFT REVIEW - A YEAR LATER by "Mean" Dean Engemoen Before anyone gets upset, keep in mind that I may or may not know what the hell I am talking about. LIB - 1. Evgeni Malkin 44. Shawn Belle 47. Nikita Alexeev 53. Vojtek Polak 56. Michael Blunden 77. Jussi Timonen 124. Raitis Ivanans 148. Brian Finley I hear this Malkin kid might be OK one day. Interesting to see some once-highly touted prospects such as Belle and Finley not getting much love anymore, although it seems as if Belle is going to get another chance to finally stick this season. The rest of this draft features longshots (Polak) and no-shots (Blunden, Timonen, Ivanans). Still, any draft where you add a bona-find superstar can't be all bad. GRADE: B- New Grade: Still B- No changes necessary here, my comments seem to be right on the money. BUF - 2. Jordan Staal 11. Marc-Edouard Vlasic 35. Ryan Parent 80. Bryan Berard 83. Patrick Kaleta 106. Mike Card 130. Duncan Milroy 154. Martin Houle Well Staal wouldn't have been my choice at #2 but there is no denying he's a young stud and I guess it just comes down to personal preference. Love this draft, a young stud on the blueline in Vlasic and a young stud in waiting in Parent (how the hell did he fall to 35?). Even the later picks have some promise, if Berard makes the team he could have an impact for another season or two, and Milroy still has a bit of a chance as well. It pains me to say it, but Tommy did it again. GRADE: A New Grade: Still A See above. No changes to this one either. MIN - 3. Anze Kopitar 6. Phil Kessel 21. Ladislav Smid 25. David Backes 34. Alex Edler 49. Andy Greene 120. Nate Guenin 144. Brandon Prust 147. Brian Boucher 167. Andreas Karlsson 168. Nick Tarnasky 169. Garth Murray 177. Tommi Santala 185. Steve Montador 188. Janne Niinimaa 190. George Parros Wow, wow, WOW. Anyone who doesn't like Kopitar has obviously never seen the kid play. The first 6 picks here are absolutely fantastic and all will have an impact in the NSHL in the next few years. The bottom of the draft isn't much to look at but when you get Kopitar, Kessel and Smid in the same draft it really doesn't matter. GRADE: A+ New Grade: A+++++ I guess I can't really give a higher grade than A+, but it's difficult to find a Even got a nice surprise with Boucher's good card for a few games. PIT - 4. Paul Stastny 31. Daniel Girardi 55. David Moss 79. Glen Metropolit 102. Antti Laaksonen 126. Alain Nasreddine 150. Barry Brust 180. Rod Pelley 191. Danny Bois 196. Byron Ritchie Stastny was an obvious choice at #4 and Moss, although lightly regarded, looked great in his half-season in Calgary last year; he wouldn't be the first low level prospect to make an impact. Getting a potentially full-time 4th line contributor in Ritchie at pick 196 is also good, but the lack of useful depth or high end prospects in this draft makes it tough to rate highly. GRADE: C+ New Grade: B- Girardi looks better than I expected and Metropolit has become useful. Pelley looks like he could be a useful checking centre as well. NYL - 5. Niklas Backstrom 18. Patrick O'Sullivan 42. Mark Eaton 43. Petteri Nummelin 52. Joel Lundqvist 76. Toby Petersen Well nobody can accuse the Lancers of going for "quantity over quality".....however, considering the players available after the top 60 or so, that's not necessarily a bad thing. I'm not sold on Backstrom as a long-term fix, although at least there will be one great season from him. O'Sullivan, Eaton and Lundqvist are excellent picks. GRADE: B New Grade: B- Backstrom slipped a bit, just a bit, and Eaton suffered through another injury p Lundqvist hasn't become a regular contributor just yet but still might. TPK - 7. Alexander Radulov 20. Dustin Boyd 27. Clarke MacArthur 51. Alexei Kaigorodov 68. Johnny Oduya 75. Jonas Holmqvist 98. Patrick Fischer 99. Bret Hedican 107. Roman Polak 122. Brad Isbister 146. David Hale Two top prospects (Radulov, Boyd) and a couple of potential top 6 defensemen (Oduya, Hale) highlight an otherwise average draft. Who knows if Kaigorodov will ever come back from Russia and I doubt MacArthur or Holmqvist will ever make any kind of NSHL impact. GRADE: C+ New Grade: C Well the KHL has possibly taken the best player in this draft out of the equatio but it's tough to fault Topeka for that unforseen circumstance. Oduya has steppe almost everyone else in this draft is out of the NHL. MON - 8. Travis Zajac 23. Benoit Pouliot 32. Petr Kalus 45. Mike Green 54. Loui Eriksson 67. Fredrik Norrena 73. Maxim Lapierre 78. Jonathan Sigalet 101. Daniel Carcillo There is a lot to like at the top (Zajac) and the bottom (Eriksson, Norrena, Lapierre, Sigalet) as Guy maximized what he could get at those picks. I'm not sold at all on Pouliot or Kalus. Green could be a useable 6th D-man. GRADE: B- New Grade: A "Green could be a useable 6th D-man". Or he might score 18 goals and 56 points. Wow. Eriksson took a big step forward last year and Lapierre appears to be the real deal. And if Carcillo can control himself a bit, he'll be a solid forward too. Great job. QCP - 9. Drew Stafford 33. Josh Hennessy 57. Niklas Grossman 81. Kyle Comisky 104. David Booth 128. Rich Peverley 152. Jonas Nordqvist 171. Aaron Rome 182. Joel Kwiatkowski Love the Grossman pick, hate the rest. Stafford will never be an impact player and I doubt any of the others will ever play an NSHL game. Heck I've never heard of most of them. GRADE: D New Grade: C+ Booth had 22 goals and I've still never heard of him. :-) STM - 10. Jack Johnson 15. Kris Letang 16. Troy Brouwer 59. Brian Bickell 115. Joe Piskula 160. Fredric Cassivi Andy must have wet himself to see Johnson slip to #10; amazing. Letang and Brouwer should both contribute as well; 3 impact players is pretty good for any draft. GRADE: A- New Grade: Still A- No changes here. SES - 12. Rob Schremp 37. Kyle Quincey 60. Frans Nielsen 85. Kurt Sauer 132. Mikko Lehtonen 155. Tomas Mojzis 174. David Printz 184. Nathan McIver Oh wow, there must have been 10 better picks at #12 than that guy. Quincey might be a serviceable 5th/6th defenseman but it's highly unlikely any of the other guys will ever play in the NSHL. Sorry Scott. GRADE: F New Grade: D- Sauer improved his game quite a bit and Mojzis and McIver look to be guys who might play a bit. Still not very good but not a total disaster anymore. CGC - 13. Guillaume Latendresse 36. Blair Jones 61. Sebastien Bisaillon 84. Marc Methot 108. Mark Fraser 131. Drew Larman 156. Janis Sprukts 173. Yanick Lehoux See my comments for the Sasquatch. This is a disaster. Lehoux might be a 3rd liner someday but other than that, this is a complete bust. GRADE: F New Grade: Still F Latendresse found himself in the press box a bit last year and the next step is back to the AHL. Methot has some moderate potential. LYN - 14. Mike Smith 38. Keith Yandle 50. Nigel Dawes 62. Ville Peltonen 72. Michael Funk 86. Dustin Byfuglien 96. Jeremy Williams 109. Mathieu Roy 133. Michael Ryan I presume Peltonen has a useable card for this year, and Mark certainly cornered the market on Sabres who will never play in the NSHL.......I like the Smith pick, he looks to be the heir apparent in Dallas, and Yandle and Byfuglien could add defensive depth. Dawes is intriguing. GRADE: B- New Grade: B The trade to Tampa made Smith a bonafide #1 goalie and who could have seen Byfuglien scoring like that? HRH - 17. Joe Pavelski 41. Mikhail Grabovsky 65. Tom Gilbert 89. David Clarkson 103. Mark Mancari 112. Martin Lojek 136. Martin St. Pierre Not much to get excited about here after the top pick; Pavelski has upside AND a very useable card for this season ( I assume). He's the only impact player here. GRADE: C New Grade: B- Grabovsky can't play for the Habs so he's the #1 centre in Toronto? That just shows how horrible the Leafs will be. Pavelski is as advertised and Gilbert looked like he might turn into a solid defenseman; Clarkson also showed some flashes of a useful player in Jersey. FGF - 19. Luc Bourdon 58. Shane O'Brien 91. Jason York Um.....did Mo forget what day the draft was? One day the Canucks are going to succeed with a high draft pick not named "Sedin". >From what I've seen so far, this isn't the one. Bourdon was AWFUL last year and hasn't looked any better at camp so far this year. He's young and has talent, but I predict that O'Brien will have a bigger NSHL impact than Bourdon. GRADE: F New Grade: D- Bourdon's tragic death probably covers up the fact that he wasn't very likely to be an impact player anyway. Having said that, O'Brien looks like he co play a little more than I anticipated. SEA - 22. Marek Schwarz 46. Blake Comeau 66. Dave Bolland 70. Enver Lisin 94. Tony Salmalainen 117. Derrick Walser 141. Mattias Weinhandl 162. Oleg Tverdovsky 175. Timo Helbling 186. Philippe Sauve 193. Petr Tenkrat I'll ignore the game fillers at the bottom and focus on the top picks......well, it doesn't much matter as they all suck J Sorry commish, but there is probably not a single player here that will ever make any kind of impact, including Schwarz, who seriously needs to work on his technique. Bolland is my favorite pick in this group and he's no slam dunk NSHLer. GRADE: D- New Grade: Still D- Lisin might be the only guy to ever play more than 10 NSHL games from this point on. FLO - 24. Ryan Callahan 26. Matt Lashoff 29. Jaroslav Halak 39. David Krejci 63. Andrej Sekera 69. Brandon Dubinsky 74. Eric Perrin 82. Doug Janik 105. Alexei Mikhov 116. Kevyn Adams 123. Junior Lessard 153. Bobby Allen 172. Mark Hartigan 183. Noah Clarke I've used the term "impact players" many times in this review and I'm not sure there are any of those here either, but at least there are PLAYERS.......it looks like Rob took the safe route rather than going for the home run hits and I like that strategy. Most of these guys will likely spend some decent time in Hellcats colours. The lack of any star power keeps this from being a great draft but it's a good one. GRADE: B New Grade: B+ Krejci already looked good and the others are still on track; Halak looks good enough to start for some NHL teams. MAN - 40. Ben Guite 64. Lasse Kukkonen 88. Joey MacDonald 111. Alexei Semenov 113. Ramzi Abid 135. Lars Jonsson 158. Brad Moran The lack of a high pick is devastating and there isn't a lot to make up for it, but Jonsson looked pretty good in the games he played in Philly and that's probably an excellent pick at 135. Kukkonen is serviceable, at the very least. GRADE: C New Grade: C- Guite has become a solid checking forward and MacDonald is going to finally get a chance on Long Island, but Kukkonen has had little impact and the rest are out of the league. NCH - 48. Kamil Kreps 143. Tomas Malec 159. Yukuta Fukufuji 164. Matt Keith 176. Michael Leighton 187. Jamie Hunt 194. Colin Fraser It says here that none of these guys will ever play 10 NSHL games. At least, the Hawks owner better hope not....... GRADE: F New Grade: D Kreps will prove my above statement to be incorrect, but there isn't anything else. HOU - 71. Tomas Popperle 87. Patrick Thoresen 95. Bryan Young 97. Peter Harrold 118. David Liffiton 142. Chris Conner 157. Gabe Gauthier 163. Barry Tallackson Wow, Tallackson at 163 is the best pick (by FAR) of this bunch. I'd rather have Gabe Kaplan than Gabe Gauthier. Welcome Back, career minor leaguer. GRADE: D- New Grade: Still D- No changes from above. Tallackson is still the only hope for this draft to be saved. CCC - 93. Jan Hedja 114. Michael Wall 137. Drew Fata 138. Adam Burish 140. Micki Dupont 161. Jeff Taffe The less said about this group, the better. You would think a goalie named "Wall" would be a good omen, but not when it's a wall of swiss cheese. Drew Fata will have less of an NSHL impact than his namesake Rico, and that's not setting the bar real high. GRADE: F New Grade: D Hejda turned into a guy who might play in the NSHL for a couple years. Not much else has changed. VAW - 100. Craig Anderson 110. John Zeiler 121. Derek Meech 125. Kent Huskins 129. Tim Brent 134. Lawrence Nycholat How many games does Anderson play this year? That's how many decent games the Whitecaps will get from this motley crew.......call him Dr. Feelgood...... GRADE: D- New Grade: D Anderson turned in another solid card, albeit still limited. Huskins put in a full season and might be a useable utility defenseman. NEV- 119. Kris Newbury 127. Pierre Turgeon 151. Bryan Muir 170. Yannick Tremblay 181. Eric Meloche 192. Pierre Parenteau 197. Carsen Germyn 198. Niko Dimitrakos Well.....Turgeon is the best prospect here and he's retired....but at least there are some half decent game fillers. Muir looked good last year before getting injured, could be a dark horse. GRADE: C- New Grade: F Any of these guys still in the league? SHS - 166. Darryl Bootland 178. Patrick Coulombe 189. Matt Ellis 195. Curtis Glencross Coulombe has some interesting PP ability, could contribute as a part time injury filler for the Canucks.
