I saw a lot of enthusiasm out there; with the number of good young players entering the league it's easy to get excited, because every team has a few of them. Thanks to Lee and Jeff for their newsletter contributions this week! The Long Island Berserkers were Farley Cup contenders year-in and year-out prior to the 2005-06 lockout; ever since the work stoppage, the club has been trying to regain their footing. Has it happened? Long Island stormed out of the games with a perfect 8-0 mark in Week 1/2, being led by the dangerous top line of Vincent Lecavalier (5-13-18), Evgeni Malkin (6-10-16) and Marian Gaborik (8-7-15). On the other side of the coin, the defending champs struggled to start the new year; the Brooklyn Fourteenth went just 1-5-1-1 and are firmly resting in the basement of the Northeast Division after eight games. Something I'm not sure has ever happened in NSHL history - every single team in the league won at least one road game! Yes, including Minneapolis. The overall "home ice advantage" is actually slightly below zero at this point in the year; I'm sure it will return to form once the sample size increases, but I found it interesting nonetheless. An impressive twenty-two shot shootout in Buffalo, as the Sasquatch defeated the hometown Bulldogs on October 11. Petr Prucha finally snapped the deadlock on the eleventh shot, and Ty Conklin stopped Dion Phaneuf to seal the win for the visitors. ********************************************************************* INTERLUDE (AN OPEN LETTER FROM THE COMMISSIONER): My apologies for the rant, first of all. Don't take it personally. This applies to more people than will think it applies to them, so when reading this assume that it (or part of it) applies to you. Because it might. Over the summer, you voted me the ability to assign additional IP points as necessary. This doesn't really fall into that category, but it does in a way, and I want to mention it here. Those of you who habitually play games at the last minute really frustrate the heck out of me. I don't understand why you wait until the last minute to do anything, and then (invariably) you quick-sim your games all at once on Monday evening - or later. If you're going to do that - and yes, it's plainly obvious that some of you are doing exactly this - then I still can't figure out why you don't just pretend that the games are due on an earlier date. It's just as easy to quick-sim on an earlier date, right? (As an interlude to the interlude, DON'T QUICK-SIM YOUR GAMES. It's in the Constitution.) I play competitive league hockey on Tuesday nights and Wednesday nights - if I don't have every single result by 10pm Mountain Time on Monday night, then the newsletter doesn't get done until Thursday. On the other hand, if I have all results in time, then the newsletter can come out on Monday night or Tuesday morning. Which would you prefer? I can punish everyone by moving the deadline earlier, or I can punish those who deserve it. And I choose to do the latter: Effective immediately, any repeat offenders for late results will be infracted two incentive points per game late for the rest of the season. We're going to solve this one way or another. Thank you. ********************************************************************* 2008-09 NSHL CAPTAINS: Thanks to all who helped with this! Instead of last year's six players rated 4 or better for defense (and only short a total of 13 games for full seasons), only Pahlsson can make that claim (and only for 61 NSHL games). It's the same for passing: six rated L last year, only one this year. Determined to make the best go of it, the Bullies announced their "top twenty" skaters for the season (Shannon and Jaffray share a fourth line position, while Wagner and Johansson share the last defense slot). Even with the extended set of skaters, Manayunk is short 125 games for forwards, 43 for defensemen. While the Bullies have plenty of nearly-identical subs for forwards (expect to see a lot of Deveraux, Mair, and Johnson), White and Kukkonen will be needed to "sub for the subs" if any defenseman is injured beyond the number of games he's expected to miss. But why more hockey for your buck? Five of the Bullies' first eight games continued past the 60 minute mark. In their first two home games of the season, Manayunk beat Montreal in overtime, but lost to Stone Harbor. They triumphed in shootouts at Topeka and Stone Harbor, but lost one at Florida. The rest of the biweek was a season-opening win at Quebec, and losses at home against Topeka and St. Michael's. It seems like once again, the Bullies are tougher on the road. The net result is a better than expected 4-2-2 record. Highlights and lowlights: Dominik Hasek saving 13 of 14 ratings at Florida, saving 6 of 7 hosting Montreal, saving 5 of 11 hosting St. Michaels. For his two games, Dany Sabourin saved 12 of 14 ratings, including a 5 for 5 showing. Shot count range: Manayunk: 36 at Stone Harbor, 17 at Topeka. Opponents: 50 from Stone Harbor (two more games at 41 and 42), 25 for Quebec. This could be an interesting season! ********************************************************************* CHAMPIONSHIP TO REBUILD - BROOKLYN STARTS OVER by Jeff Tsuruoka, Brooklyn owner After winning the Farley Cup for the 2007-2008 NSHL season the Brooklyn Fourteenth find themselves firmly in rebuilding mode for 2008-2009. "It's always tough to see guys go," said Brooklyn forward Scott Walker, "especially when you've gone through so much together, but that's how this business works." Beliveau Trophy-winner John Madden is gone, as is the energetic Matt Pettinger, and team captain defenceman Kyle McLaren. In their places are new players - young players with much to prove and much to learn. In a few years fans in Brooklyn can look forward to monster hits from hulking defenceman Boris Valabik (22), steady defence from Mark Fistric (22) and Tom Gilbert (25), and the playmaking ability of Nicklas Bergfors (21). Anthony Stewart (23) may yet develop into the power forward he's got the potential to be, and hard-working forwards Brooks Laich (24), Boyd Gordon (24), Tomas Plihal (25), and Dave Steckel (26) all have their best days ahead of them. And, of course, Alexander Ovechkin is only 23 himself. "We did this three years ago," said team owner and head coach Jeff Tsuruoka. "The fans understand what we're doing, the players understand what we're doing. Judging from that new banner we've got hanging up in the rafters here at Konstantinov Hall I'd say we did the right thing." Still, this figures to be a long season for the team and its fans. "We're under no illusions here," said new team captain Ian LaPerriere. "We know what's up and we know we're up against it. The veterans left here have to stay strong for the kids, you know, show 'em the way we play in the NSHL. That's the important thing." Defenceman Barret Jackman summed it up this way: "We may not win many games this year but we're going to bust our asses trying - that I can guarantee you. Our opponents are going to be spending a lot of time with ice packs after they play us - win or lose." Brooklyn Notes - Peter Bondra's #12 will be retired this season. The date for the ceremony has not yet been determined. Bondra's number will join Dale Hunter's #32, Vladimir Konstantinov's #16, and Calle Johansson's #6 in the rafters at Konstantinov Hall. ********************************************************************* STUTTER OF IGNITION "LAUNCHES" OFFENSE-STARVED RAINIERS INTO 2008-09: by Doug Norris, Seattle Rainiers owner Thank heavens for the defending champs. Without the slow start of their Eastern Conference rivals, the Seattle Rainiers might have experienced a winless biweek to start the 2008-09 campaign. In fact, ignoring the two games against the Fourteenth, Seattle's record is 0-5-1, with 14 goals scored and 23 goals against. Pundits predicted goaltending troubles in the Emerald City, with Dwayne Roloson getting older and Vesa Toskala still trying to find his role as a starter. What no one predicted was that this star-studded offense would struggle to put the puck in the opponent's net. "Ed [Jovanovski]'s actually been our most consistent point producer," said a frustrated coach Doug Norris. "Heatley and Drury lead the team, but if you take out their five-point games, even they have been frustrated. It may be time to shake things up." Rumours abounded that the club might be dealing a defenseman - either Ed Jovanovski or Brian Rafalski - and retool for 2009-10. Norris denied those rumours. "We wouldn't think about insulting our fans by doing something like that. They know the product we can produce - now it's time for our players to prove it." The club may get their chance as their six-game homestand continues at Key Arena. Said Norris: "Now's the time to stake your claim to your spot in the standings, because our conference is just too loaded to make a push late." ********************************************************************* COACHES CORNER: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sExSTLqpNoU ********************************************************************* WEEK ONE/TWO RESULTS: Seattle Rainiers 6, at Brooklyn 2 [played by Dale Ripley] SEA Chris Drury -
