Everyone had everything in by the end of Sunday! It's definitely appreciated. ********************************************************************* WEEK THREE/FOUR IN REVIEW: The Long Island Berserkers may not have lived up to their lofty undefeated Week 1/2 expectations, going "just" 4-3-0-1 in the last biweek. On the other hand, they did open up a seven-point lead in the Northeast Division, who collectively had a rough go of it. Where did all of those wins go? Across the conference to the Atlantic Division, where five teams are at or about the 0.500 mark. Leading the pack - and the conference - are the St. Michael's Privateers, with their lofty 13-3 mark. Also at 13-3, and leading the toughest division in hockey, are the Nevada Thunder, who are barely holding off Vancouver and Fort Garry. The Northwest isn't the tightest division, though - that honour goes to the Central, where two points separate first place from fourth place. St. Michael's' Duncan Keith did something rarely seen in an NSHL league game, scoring a defenseman hat trick on October 25th in Corner Creek. Keith scored the first goal and the last two goals in a 5-1 Privateer rout. Three days later, Sergei Gonchar of the Brooklyn Fourteenth didn't get a defenseman hat trick. He did, however, have a six-point game, with two power-play goals and four assists. Yes, Brooklyn defeated the hometown Florida Hellcats by a 7-1 margin. ********************************************************************* ROCK BOTTOM FOR RAINIERS? by Doug Norris, Seattle owner First, the good news - the Northwest Division is as good as ever. Now the bad news - the Seattle Rainiers aren't keeping up with the rest of the group. And since the Rainiers compete in the Northwest Division, the good news isn't really good news at all. At 4-10-1-1, the Rainiers are not only in last place in their division; they're already eight points out of *fifth* place. Shaky goaltending from Vesa Toskala (4-9, 89.3% sv) and Dwayne Roloson (0-3, 85.5% sv) have derailed a promising campaign and if the team doesn't get it together soon, it could be top draft pick time for Seattle. "I don't think it's any secret that we're looking for a better performance in net," club general manager Doug Norris said on Monday. "Whether we get that from Vesa, or from Dwayne, or from elsewhere, I really don't know." Rumours that the club has considered acquiring Dan Ellis from the Minneapolis Massasauga won't go away, despite the team's denials. The club may turn to third-stringer Jocelyn Thibault in the short-term; the long-time NSHL starter is tearing up the SCMHL for Tacoma and would welcome another chance in the bigs. What about first-rounder Jonathan Bernier? The club intends to leave him with his junior team in the QMJHL for the entire year. "He could play for us right now, but it's better to let him develop in Lewiston than to have him playing 15-20 games in Seattle," said Norris. "Of course, things can change in an instant around here. Our fans expect - and deserve - a winning team every year." There is some good news in Seattle - Jonathan Cheechoo already has ten goals on the young season. Chris Drury anad Ed Jovanovski are both averaging a point per game. Said Norris: "The offense is starting to click; we've had a lot of forty-plus shot games. Unfortunately, we've mainly made a lot of opposing goaltenders look really good, and that only magnifies our own problems in that area." ********************************************************************* WEEK THREE/FOUR RESULTS: Montreal 1, at Brooklyn 3 [played by Dale Ripley] BRK Brian Boucher -
