Is this finally the year where Kim's patience pays off? With Sidney Crosby and Henrik Zetterberg anchoring the offense and Nik Backstrom holding down the fort in goal, the Vancouver Whitecaps are now twenty games up and four games down after a perfect 8-0 Week 5/6. The Whitecaps are converting more than 29% with the man advantage, and already have eighty-nine goals on the season. More on the Whitecaps later in this newsletter. The Pittsburgh Hornets' Ilya Bryzgalov should file for hazard pay after the team's game of November 5th. Facing the St. Michael's Privateers, Bryzgalov had to stop fifty-three shots on net - including six in overtime - before Johnny Oduya won the game for the home team by a 2-1 margin. Bryzgalov's season has been remarkable as well, stopping 93.4% of shots against while leading the once-moribund Hornets to a 15-9 mark. The new team in Pittsburgh went 7-1 over Week 5/6. The Seattle Rainiers are also 7-1 over the past biweek, edging back to 0.500 after a horrible start. One of the great goaltending games came in the team's 5-4 overtime win over Capital City. Although Vesa Toskala allowed four Cougar goals, he stopped all four Goalie Ratings he faced *and* assisted on three Seattle goals including the overtime winner. With seven assists in nineteen games, Toskala now has more assists than eight Seattle skaters who have played more games than the Finn netminder. ********************************************************************* TESTING TO SEE IF ANYONE IS READING THIS: You need to be sending your results to your opponent directly (not just through the results list). And most of you are (yay!). And if you know that your opponent is on the results list, then it's okay to send it to the results list only. However... Since I've said this multiple times this year, and it's the same people doing it over and over again, here's a test to see if someone is reading this. If you do not receive your game results, please send me a note and the offending owner will be docked an IP for each game in violation. ********************************************************************* REMEMBER TO PLAY YOUR DEFENSEMEN! We've have quite a few situations over the past few weeks where owners are trying to "game" our rules. Just a quick reminder that the rules are designed for maximum flexibility and enjoyment, and not necessarily to squeeze out every single action card out of your two good players. While it is fun to win, keep the honor code in mind: "By being a member of the NSHL, all members realize that the purpose of the league is enjoyment for all members, and not necessarily individual glory. To those ends, all members agree not to overtly cheat or alter results to his own advantage (or disadvantage), and all members agree to play all games fairly and with the best of intentions for both teams. By accepting an invitation for team ownership, the new owner agrees to be bound by this honor code." One of the things most people like about this league is its realism, and if we need to create more restrictive usage rules because people are taking advantage of the existing rules, then we will. One specific thing which has come up recently is something that most of you should know (since we voted upon it last summer): "Defenseman may be scheduled for a maximum of six shifts (18 AC) total, but each defenseman must be scheduled to play one shift within the first three shifts." Please keep this in mind - I will be spot-checking CMs! Hopefully more than enough said. ********************************************************************* NO LAUGHING MATTER: HIGH-FLYING WHITECAPS PLAYING A TWO-WAY GAME by Junu Kim, Vancouver owner VANCOUVER (CP) - Brent Sopel grimaced and chuckled over the question he was asked. Sopel is one of two Vancouver Whitecap players who's seen every game in the team's six-year history in the NSHL. That includes the 2002-03 campaign, when the club turned in an abysmal 9-63-5-5 record in its inaugural season. Sopel was asked about his memories of that campaign, punctuated by a 21-game losing streak. Not only were the Whitecaps outscored 82-21 during this span, but none of these games went into overtime ~V meaning Vancouver went pointless for one-fourth of a season. But in Sopel's mind, that campaign turned out to be anything but pointless. He recognized how it started an organizationwide learning and development process. As a sign of the team's progress, Vancouver recorded its first-ever 8-0 biweek in franchise history in biweek 5/6 ~V and has ascended to be among the NSHL's premier clubs today. "That year, no one in that locker room hit the ice expecting to lose. But once we gave up a goal or coughed up a lead, you almost got the sense that we were waiting for the roof to cave in," said Sopel, who came to the franchise in the 2002 expansion draft. "In the years since then, we've added some great talent and bought into the idea of being a tenacious team that can create scoring chances." In the team's short history, Vancouver's steadily improved, turning in a 49-27-6 record in 2007-08. Yet so far in 2008-09, the Whitecaps have shifted into warp speed, recording a stellar 20-4 record. Not only have they outscored opponents 89-44, but they have yet to play an overtime game ~V meaning that opponents have had to beat them in 60 minutes in order to record a point in the standings. Ironically, despite a roster featuring young high-octane scorers such as Sidney Crosby (12-26-38) and Henrik Zetterberg (17-13-30), as well as developing players like forwards Joffrey Lupul (14-11-25), Dustin Brown (10-9-19) and Patrick Sharp (9-17-26), this year's Whitecap team is clicking because of defense and puck control. Through 24 games, not only has Vancouver has recorded 286 takeaways, but it's succeeded on a whopping 74 percent of its takeaway chances. In comparison, based on this year's stats partway through biweek 5/6, Capital City (69 percent) and St. Michael's (64 percent) are the only other NSHL clubs with a takeaway percentage above 62 percent. Also, Whitecap centermen have won a league-leading 62 percent of their faceoffs; Nevada is next at 57 percent. That's made life easier for Whitecap goalies Niklas Backstrom (17-3-0 record, 1.85 GAA and .929 save percentage) and Craig Anderson (3-1-0, 1.76, .943). In fact, on average Vancouver is outshooting opponents each game 37-27. "We have this image of playing a loose, wide-open game, but we're a better defensive team than people may realize," Zetterberg said. "Not only do we have some stubborn forecheckers up front, but we've got some savvy defensemen who cover the zone tightly." Certainly, the Whitecaps aren't taking anything for granted this year. There's plenty of hockey left to be played this season, and they're situated in the NSHL's toughest division: Last season, each of the six Northwest Division clubs registered at least 92 points. What's more, it remains to be seen if Vancouver can avoid sick bay, after having been relatively healthy in past seasons. Mike Cammalleri has spent time on the injured list, and banged-up forwards Patrice Bergeron and Chris Clark have yet to appear in a game this season. Last biweek, forward Brett McLean and wily veteran blueliner Aaron Ward sustained injuries that may affect their availability in biweek 7/8. Finally, there's the nagging question of whether this young squad has the fortitude to finish the deal in the playoffs. In its history, the franchise is 1-6 in games in which it could close out a playoff series. Last year's midseason addition of veterans such as Backstrom, Clark and Jamie Langenbrunner didn't help the Whitecaps escape the first round, in which they lost game 7 of their series against the Seattle Rainiers 1-0 in overtime. That memory also makes Sopel squirm. But unlike his recollections of 2002-03, this thought is no laughing matter. "Don't get me wrong, the Rainiers earned that win," Sopel said. "But that series is our motivation to do even better this year." ********************************************************************* RAINIER RECOVERY? THANK THE OFFENSE by Doug Norris, Seattle Rainiers owner The Seattle Rainiers are back in a familiar pace. After languishing to the Northwest Division basement over the season's first month, Seattle went 7-1 to get back to the 0.500 mark. Where they go from here will most likely depend on whether or not the team's goaltending performance improves. Incumbent Dwayne Roloson has been relegated to the backup's chair, as a poor preseason has transitioned into a 1-4, 85.5% save percentage start. Vesa Toskala hasn't exactly lit up the nighttime sky, either, although at least he's won more than he's lost. Couple that with rumours that two potential transactions for a new starter fell threw at the last minute. The team's goalscorers are still evoking memories of Cup days in 2004 and 2007, with Dany Heatley and Jonathan Cheechoo pacing the way with thirteen goals apiece. And yet rumours persist that the latter will be dealt to get that elusive number one. Said general manager Doug Norris: "Our policy is not to discuss players we are interested in, but we've got options we are considering." Could those options include recalling 2008 draftee Jonathan Bernier? "If it comes down to it," said Norris. ********************************************************************* WEEK FIVE/SIX RESULTS: Montreal 1, at Brooklyn 3 BRK Alexander Ovechkin - goal, assist, takeaway, hit BRK Sergei Gonchar - For the second consecutive biweek, the NSHL has awarded its Skater of the Week honours to Brooklyn's Alexander Ovechkin. While his goal-scoring streak ended at eight games in a home loss to Topeka, the Russian got right back on the horse with a four-goal game against Stone Harbor, and now has a new five-game goal streak. Overall, Ovy had eleven goals over Week 5/6 to reach a six-week total of twenty-nine. Although the winger likely won't maintain his current astromical pace (of 99 goals!), his performance will be key if the Fourteenth plan to be playing into June once again. If the current pattern holds, this won't be the only record broken. +/- SOG G A PIM PP SH FO-W AC IT TA HIT SP AS 11/05 vs MON 1 7 1 1 0 0 0 0-0 45 24:28 1 1 1 3 11/07 vs STM -1 3 1 0 0 1 0 0-0 36 20:34 0 0 1 3 11/08 vs TPK -2 4 0 0 0 0 0 0-0 36 19:19 1 2 1 4 11/10 vs SHS 3 9 4 0 0 1 0 0-0 34 18:51 1 0 0 6 11/12 at FLO -1 7 1 0 2 1 0 0-0 32 17:00 2 1 3 3 11/13 at STM -1 4 1 0 0 0 0 0-0 40 22:31 1 1 2 4 11/16 at SHS 2 6 2 1 0 0 0 0-0 38 20:57 1 1 2 3 11/17 at PIT 1 6 1 1 0 0 0 0-0 33 18:52 0 1 3 4 Manayunk's Marco Sturm, Vancouver's Henrik Zetterberg and Vincent Lecavalier of Long Island round out the nominees for Week 5/6. The town Dominik Hasek made famous in the late 1990s had the biweek's top two goaltenders in Week 5/6. And the goaltender of the week winner, by a nose? Ilya Bryzgalov. Bryzgalov has suffered with the Lancers/Americans/Hornets franchise since coming over via trade in the summer of 2003, but the netminder - and the team - have come into their own in 2008-09. Bryzgalov was a perfect 6-0 in Week 5/6, stopping 84.6% of Goalie Ratings and 96.6% of all shots despite facing 6.5 goalie ratings per game. Bryzgalov's magnum opus was a 53-shot, 2-1 overtime victory over Eastern Conference power St. Michael's, a performance he followed up admirably with a 43-save, 6-2 win over Florida.
