And having said that, it's going to be a short one because I need to get the meat-and-potatoes to the people! So have at it, people! Just a note that I will be opening up a special election this week regarding the waiver draft. The reason I'm doing this now instead of waiting until the summer - and the only reason I'm doing this now - is because after the straw poll I took earlier this year, I believe that it will pass during a summer ballot, and don't want people making roster manoeuvres based on the current system if it's going to change right before the next draft(s). Stay tuned for this. I'm currently hiring for an NSHL Compliance Officer, someone whose role would be to check computer managers and usage by owners. This person would need to have a solid understanding of the usage rules, and be able to check out a few complaints per biweek as well as spot-checking computer managers if and when they felt like it. If you're interested, please contact me. Buffalo transitioned towards the future, with three big trades - the biggest one being a swap with Topeka. Thanks to Tom and Doug both for great newsletter articles! ********************************************************************* TOPEKA BLOCKBUSTER by Doug North, Topeka owner The Topeka Tarantulas made a blockbuster deal today with the Buffalo Bulldogs that netted them one of the top snipers in the game. Ilya Kovalchuk is coming to America's Heartland in a 8 player deal. The Spiders gave up alot of youth as they sent Andrew Cogliano, Sergei Kostitsyn, Alex Goligoski, and Rusty Olesz. Topeka also traded their first and second round picks in the 2009 draft to Buffalo. Along with Kovalchuk, the Spiders recieved RW Viktor Kozlov, center Gregory Campbell and goalie Wade Dubielewicz. The Tarantulas have made some strides during the 2008-09 NSHL season. After four straight 100+ point seasons, management felt it was time to rebuild. The result has been seasons of 62 and 54 points. At press time, the Spiders have 35 points after 31 games. GM Doug North thought the time was right to pull the trigger on bringing Kovalchuk to Topeka. "As an orgainzation, we felt like we've done a good job of stockpiling good prospects through the draft and trades the past few years," said North. "We could either wait a few more years for these guys to mature or another option was the one we chose.....to bring in one of the premiere players in the league." It came at a cost as North traded two former first round picks in Cogliano and S. Kostitsyn and two former second round picks in Olesz and Goligoski to go along with first and second round picks in 2009. "It's the old adage that you gotta give up something to get something," said North. "However, we feel good that we were able to do this deal without touching our top three lines. We also thing that we were able to upgrade in goal with Dubi." Preliminary reports say that Kovalchuk will play on the Tarantuals first line with Henrik Sedin and Corey Perry. Dubielewicz will replace Antero Nittymaki as the backup to Kari Lehtonen. "We're not saying that we're gonna win the cup this year, but we'll be extremely disappointed if this team doesn't make the playoffs and contend for the Central Division title." One thing is for sure.......there's hockey excitement back in Topeka!!! ********************************************************************* A MESSAGE OF HOPE ... AND CHANGE By President-Elect Barack Hussein Obama (and Tom Vinacci, Buffalo owner) People of Berlin - people of the world - this is Buffalo's moment. This is their time. A time of hope and for change. There's an Ayers of change in Buffalo as the Bulldogs have made some bold changes in the hope that change will bring new hope, and with that hope a change that will bring more wins to the good people of Buffalo. Since raising the Farley Cup in 2002, the following 6 years under the Bush administration have yet to yield positive results for the Buffalo organization. It took a lot of blood, sweat and tears for the Bulldogs get to where they are today, but they have just begun. Today Buffalo begins in earnest the work of making sure that the team they leave our children is just a little bit better than the one they exhibit today. Several building blocks already exist, and these blocks provide a solid foundation for future success. Rick DiPietro and Cam Ward are fine young men who can guard the nets from unfriendly invading forces; Dion Phaneuf, Braydon Coburn and Marc-Edouard Vlasic can keep the borders safe for years; and Mike Ribeiro and Jordan Staal can provide the offense this countr ..errr ... team needs in the coming years. But change will need to occur to ensure prosperity, and change is what is happening. Long-time NSHL-insider Martin St. Louis was shipped off to St. Michaels in exchange for the promise and hope that is defenseman Jack Johnson who should round out a solid foursome of blue-liners with Phaneuf, Vlasic and Coburn. Enigmatic winger Miro Satan was then sent off to investigate voting irregularities in Nevada in exchange for Nevada's first-round pick in the upcoming election. Does the change end here, or is there hope for more? Said team owner Tom Vinacci, "Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we've been waiting for. We are the change that we seek. What we seek is a blockbuster trade, one that holds the promise of change for a better future. We hope." In order to become better in touch with middle America, Buffalo shipped off Ilya Kovlachuk, Viktor Kozlov, Wade Dubielewicz and Gregory Campbell to the Heartland (Topeka, Kansas) in exchange for promising youngsters Andrew Cogliano, Alex Goligoski, Rustislav Olesz, and Sergei Kostitsyn, along with Topeka's first two picks in the upcoming election. In all, Buffalo sent away six players and brought in five, but they also got the promise of hope in adding two first-round picks and two second-round picks. The Buffalo team is now like a strong young tree, not an old dying one, and the draft picks are like ACORNs. They will grow into something big and strong, we hope, and will withstand the scrutiny of further investigation. "We believe in an America where hard-work is rewarded," Vinacci said, "and the five young players we brought in - defensemen Johnson and Goligoski plus forwards Cogliano, Olesz and Kostitsyn - are known for the enthusiasm and effort they bring to the ice every night. Change does not always come quickly, but within two years we should be contending for the Farley Cup once again." This is the moment when Buffalo must build on the wealth that open markets have created, and share its benefits more equitably. Trade has been a cornerstone of their growth and global development. But they will not be able to sustain this growth if it favors the few, and not the many. Hence, the trades were made, are more may be forthcoming. For the Buffalo Bulldogs are about hope ... and change. ********************************************************************* WEEK SEVEN/EIGHT RESULTS: Minneapolis 0, at Brooklyn 7 BRK Jeremy Roenick -
