Thank you to everyone for your patience this week with the newsletter delays. Please try and get your managers out by the end of Tuesday, and results are due January 26th. Also, thank you to everyone who chipped in with newsletter articles this biweek; there are some excellent works in this issue. One of those articles is on the resurgence of the Pittsburgh Hornets franchise. Since coming into the league in 2002, the once-New York/Empire State franchise has never finished out of the Northeast Division cellar. A benefit of this (the only benefit?) is consistent high draft choices, and those players have blossomed upon their arrival in the Steel City. The club now sports an eight-point lead on the rest of the division. Another article (two, actually!) concerns the trade of one of the cornerstones of the Houston franchise, captain Mats Sundin. Evidently, the Vancouver Whitecaps aren't just interested in winning the 2009 Farley Cup - they want to lap the field in the process. At 42-6, the Whitecaps hold a 22-point lead on the rest of the conference! The first double shutout of the season came in Seattle on December 23, with Dwayne Roloson and the Seattle Rainiers outlasting Ryan Miller and the Lyndonville Blades by a 1-0 shootout margin. Dany Heatley got the only goal of the shootout, preserving the win for Roloson (31 saves, 6/6 GR). Of course, this game continued the Rainiers' power outage, as the night before they were blanked by Rick DiPietro and the Buffalo Bulldogs. DiPietro stopped forty-seven Seattle shots - ten Goalie Ratings - in the 1-0 win. And almost as soon as there was one, there was two. The Topeka Tarantulas knocked off the hometown Stone Harbor Sound by a 1-0 shootout margin, as Wade Dubielewicz (26 saves, 4/4) thwarted an excellent effort from Henrik Lundqvist (41 saves, 7/7 GR). Since a lot of free agent were signed, please remember the rule that all newly-acquired free agents must play in a minimum of six games in the next biweek. Thanks! ********************************************************************* EVEN THE COMMISH IS NOT EXEMPT: In one of my home games this past biweek (against Lyndonville), an error in my computer manager resulted in Nick Boynton having a very long rest on the bench. So the lesson is this - check your computer managers very carefully! ********************************************************************* THE CAPTAIN SHEDS A TEAR by Michael Kuduk, Houston owner January 6, 2009 Mike Anderson Houston Post The news came to the locker room after the Aeros' 4-3 victory over Manyunk. We all know that the team has been struggling to regain its Western Conference championship form all season. We know all about the penalties, the poor defensive coverage, the missed opportunities, the shaky goaltending. And we know about the team's mediocre performance on the road. But we also know that it wasn't a problem with the team's leadership. The Captain led by example, day in and day out, up 6-3 or down 7-2. This season isn't, wasn't his fault. And now, he's gone. At least Aeros management was classy enough to call a press conference in Houston the next day. GM Mike Kuduk started off by saying, "I cannot begin to tell you all what a desperately difficult decision this has been for me. It took a special player to make me even consider trading our captain. While we will probably make the playoffs and may advance a few rounds, I do not think our current team has the chemistry to go all the way. Patrice and Mattias are two players with tremendous upside, who hopefully will be playing with us for a long time." Mike added, "And, probably more importantly, Mats needs to play for a team who has a legitimate shot at the Farley Cup. It would complete his NSHL career to hoist the trophy. We can't do it this year. I think with Mats, Vancouver will." Then, the great center stepped up to the podium, a tear already running down his left cheek. "I cannot truly express how great the Houston commmunity has been for me as a player, and a person. I have loved playing with my teammates, and our fans. You are all the best." That was all he could say, as he left the podium and the Toyota Center for the last time as an Aero. GM Mike Kuduk stayed around for questions, which turned ugly. But that's for another time and place. Mats Sundin, Houston record 04-05 41 g - 92 a - 133 pts - +71 06-07 32 g - 83 a - 115 pts - +35 07-08 40 g - 53 a - 93 pts - +46 08-09 24 g - 38 a - 62 pts - +8 - through 48 games Career NSHL: 785 games 332 goals 559 assists 891 points +262 44 GWG ********************************************************************* SO WHO'S NEXT? by Michael Kuduk, Houston owner Mike Anderson Houston Post With the trading of team captain and leading scorer Mats Sundin to Vancouver for an injury prone center and a raw prospect, one has to wonder what's next for the oragnization. If GM Mike Kuduk, wanted to shake things up, he certainly succeeded. So is there anyone else who's going to feel the wrath of management (or mismanagement - time will tell)? Chris Pronger - Chris is still one of the NSHL's leading defensemen, but is having a bad year. Especially galling have been his 107 penalty minutes, many of them 2 minute minors in key situations which has cost his team games. Chris has yet to figure out the way refs are calling games this year, perhaps once he does things will improve. He's still relatively young, and possesses the potential to once again dominate the league. Tomas Vokoun - Clearly having an off year. Coach Dave Tippett has been playing Chris Osgood more in key situations. Osgood has been up to the challenge, Tomas has not. Rob Blake - Another defenseman who is getting up there in years. Not as mobile, and has been getting beat to the net with regularity in recent games. Niklas Lidstrom - Don't even think it. 50 assists and +17 on a mediocre team are god-like numbers. Brendan Morrow - Several coaches have inquired about him, but his two-way play this year has been excellent. My guess is he stays, or it would take an awful lot to get him. Scott Gomez - Underperforming with only 9 goals, but he'll be expected to fill a big void at center. Brendan Shanahan - Another oldie-but goodie. With 14 goals and 17 assists he has bailed out the Aeros in some tight contests. Let's face it - after trading the Captain, anything is possible. ********************************************************************* A DOORMAT NO LONGER by Chris Beddick, Pittsburgh Hornets owner Until this season, the Pittsburgh Hornets (formally New York Lancers and Empire State Americans) were a perennial NSHL doormat. The franchise had never won more than 30 games in any season, and has never made the playoffs All of that is changing this season. The Hornets have now won their 30th game, coming before New Year's, and have the best shot at making the playoffs for the first time in franchise history. GM Chris Beddick has higher goals however. "We announced to our great fans when we took over, that our goal is to build a championship franchise, one that is set up to compete for the Farley Cup every season. Thirty wins is nice and exciting for our fans, but our goal is to not just make the playoffs, it is to win the Farley Cup." Beddick is quick to pay homage to the franchises previous management, headed by Steve Beren. "When you look at our team, yes, alot of pieces have been added in the last year or so, but the cupbard was not bare. Bryzgalov, Armstrong, Axelsson, Burrows, Vrbata, Johnson, Sarich, among others, were already here because of the prudent drafting under Steve's guidance." While the outcome of this season is yet to be determined, the Hornets franchise has turned the corner, and with that, expectations are raised. "We feel real good about our present, and are really excited about our future", says Beddick. He added "Patrick Kane, Sam Gagner, Milan Lucic provide a great foundation of youngsters to build around." Recent deals have brought Brian Campbell, Jason Arnott and Sheldon Souray on board, as the team gears up for hopefully a strong stretch drive. Captain Mike Modano is excited. "It is great to see the transformation of our franchise. These kids have come a long way is such a short period of time, it is amazing. I feel rejuvenated and am glad to be apart of what we are doing here." Whether this all translates into a Cup winner is an open question. However, one thing is certain, the Pittsburgh Hornets are an NSHL doormat no longer. ********************************************************************* BULLIES ANNOUNCE NEW CHARITY EVENT by Lee Yelshin, Manayunk owner Philadelphia Inquirer December 20, 2008 The Manayunk Bullies announced that a new charity event, "Gilping Crossing Day", will be held immediately following their December 29 home game against the Sound Chasers. The event is modeled on a tradition of the small town of Gilping Crossing in Cotswolds, England. After the holidays, villagers bring out a single unwanted gift to the town common, where it is thrown on a bonfire. For a $5 fee, anyone can bring an unwanted present to the Kate Smith Memorial RJR Reynolds American Cancer Society First Union Center Arena on the 29th, where it will be destroyed at the end of the game. Proceeds will be donated to several area charities. ********************************************************************* FLAMES FORCE EVACUATION AFTER BULLIES GAME by Lee Yelshin, Manayunk owner Philadelphia Inquirer December 30, 2008 Smoke and ash filled the Kate Smith Memorial RJR Reynolds American Cancer Society First Union Center Arena once again as yet another ill-conceived event caused thousands of nearly blinded hockey fans to stream out into the parking areas around the stadium. This time, the cause was the almost-tragic "Gilping Crossing Day" event. As numerous unwanted gifts accumulated at center ice after last night's loss to Pittsburgh, team owner Lee Yelshin's three year old son triggered the first flamethrower blast into the pile. Almost immediately, smoke, acrid fumes, and steam filled the seating area. Fire suppression systems were triggered above the seats and concourses. As fans fled the building, Alex Yelshin was heard to yell, "Swoggle me eyes! I'll fight him man-to-man with one hand tied behind my back!" Although no one was hurt during the incident and ensuing evacuation, tonight's game against Vancouver may need to be delayed until repairs are completed and the ice becomes firm enough for play. Fans remembered the last time this happened, caused by the indoor fireworks used during Mark Messier's retirement ceremony at the opening game of last season. ********************************************************************* HELLCATS WANT TO SHAKE IT UP by Robert Ryan, Florida owner The Florida Hellcats have seen enough. They have decided a little more than midway through the 2008-09 NSHL season that the team is average at best. "What we're looking for is a spark", said GM Rob Ryan. "A few players like David Booth have come on, but the extra effort is few and far between." The root of the problem seems to lie within the defense and goaltending. In the past, the Hellcats have had a very good defense coupled with above average goaltending. This year, it is marked by mediocrity. Ray Emery seems to be doing best with a .902 save percentage and a 3.13 GAA but his record is just 9-8. Jason LaBarbera was brought in to be the number one goalie but has been one of the worst starters in the league with a 13-14 record and just a .893 save percentage and a 3.38 GAA. One of the issues appears to be a lack of scoring as the Hellcats have only managed 2.86 goals per game on average which is a far cry from their offensive juggernauts of the past. Kind of like run support in baseball, the goalies on the Cats are just not getting it. One of surprises of the year happens to be the scoring of David Booth who leads the team through 44 games with 20 goals. Vinny Prospal and Daymond Langkow, his new linemates, have done well also with 52 and 53 points, respectively. But the rest of the offense has disappointed, especially the play of Brad Boyes. Not only does he have a weak 13 goals but he also "leads" the team with a horrid -21 plus/minus. A very poor showing considering the Hellcats play .500 hockey. Boyes has been relegated to the second line but is still upbeat on the team's outlook on his future. Brandon Dubinsky, Eric Perrin, Chris Gratton, Matt Stajan and Stu Barnes have all had a hand in the demise of the Florida offense. Another problem seems to be the weakening of the once proud Hellcat defense. Lubomir Visnovsky has fared well scoring-wise (6 goals, 18 assists), but the rest of the line is bare offensively with Trevor Daley and Chris Phillips with only three goals each and only two more goals from the rest of the rearguards. GM Ryan said that "This year's defense is the worst I can remember with only Phillips pulling his weight. All the others, like Ehrhoff, Jason Smith and Scuderi have all lacked smarts and aggressiveness. Even Visnovsky is a minus 13. Pretty sad if you ask me." Ryan also stated that "No one is untouchable. We need to shake things up. Players that might be able to give something to other teams in a Farley Cup run might be traded. We can no longer afford to stand pat. We are at a crossroads with the franchise again, mostly stemming from the lack of goaltending and defense." ********************************************************************* 2008-09 EASTERN ALL-STAR NOMINEES: Ballots are due 10pm MST, Sunday, January 25. Please vote for exactly one player from each position. I have added conventional statistics through forty games (it would have been forty-eight games, but I misloaded Brian's file and I just noticed it while I was doing the last team. It took about two hours to do, but if someone wants to update it, that would be fantastic). Each league owner is REQUIRED to vote. Each league associate is encouraged to vote. Please vote! All-star reserves will be selected by each conference's head coach. Also, if you're interested in hosting the 2008-09 All Star Game, please let me know by January 25. what may be most surprising isn't that Zetterberg captures the biweekly award, but that a 42-6 team hasn't had an "of the week" winner yet this season. So let's give credit where credit is due - Zets scored ten goals and twenty points in Week 11/12 with two hat tricks and six multiple-point contests. Now with 39 goals and 35 assists, the Swede is showing everyone why he was selected second overall in the 2003 draft. +/- SOG G A PIM PP SH FO-W AC IT TA HIT SP AS 12/17 vs BUF -1 3 0 0 0 0 0 11-9 46 25:59 1 1 0 1 12/19 vs SHS 0 4 1 0 0 0 0 12-6 44 24:28 1 0 1 1 12/20 at LYN 3 4 3 1 0 0 0 8-3 35 18:41 1 0 0 1 12/21 vs BRK 3 6 3 0 0 0 0 9-6 38 21:21 1 0 2 2 12/28 vs CGC 1 7 2 2 0 0 0 16-13 43 21:55 0 0 1 0 12/30 at MAN 3 3 0 3 0 0 0 8-5 38 22:18 1 0 1 2 12/31 at BUF 2 4 1 2 0 0 0 15-10 46 24:41 0 0 1 1 01/05 at LIB 1 2 0 2 0 0 0 11-7 41 22:48 3 0 0 2 Daniel Alfredsson of the Cougars, Marek Svatos in Minneapolis, and St. Michael's Pavel Datsyuk also deserve mention for their Week 11/12 performances. Freshly minted from Buffalo, the pint-sized backup chipped in with a spectacular helping for the Tarantulas. Although he only played three games in Week 11/12, Doobs didn't allow a single goal in three shutout victories. Stopping all 15 goalie ratings and all 83 shots on net, Dubielewicz had to work harder in his third blanking, besting Henrik Lundqvist in a shootout. Dubielewicz's shutout streak currently stands at 187:23 with Minneapolis' Antti Miettinen being the last to beat him, way back on December 1st.
