A quick note that this week is a scheduled triweek, as I'll be in Barbados for work between February 5 and February 10. I should have *some* access to e-mail but you never really know with these things. A reminder from Junu, who's been doing a phenomenal job checking computer managers over the past weeks - when you make transactions on your roster, the computer manager seems to automatically randomize things such as shot order and any player order. Remember to check these, taking particular note that all Offense-4 players should be shooting prior to any other players (and so forth). Thanks mucho to Junu and Lee for their excellent article contributions this biweek! A lot of "meat" in this issue so make sure to read things carefully. ********************************************************************* TRADE DEADLINE PASSES; WEEK THIRTEEN/FOURTEEN IN REVIEW: The Vancouver Whitecaps continue to pace the entire league, going "only" 6-2 this biweek to now stand at a commanding 48-8. With a 25-3 home mark and a 23-5 road mark, it doesn't really matter where they play you. Can the 'Caps become the first member of the expansion era to take home the Farley Cup? All signs point to "yes". But there are a few teams who geared up at this week's trade deadline in an attempt to catch the 'Caps - the first being Quebec City, who consummated a trade with Nevada where they received the league's all-time leading scorer (Jaromir Jagr), one of the league's top defensemen (Sergei Zubov), one of the league's best defensive forwards (Brian Rolston) and one of the league's top netminders (Jean-Sebastien Giguere). In return, the Thunder netted prospects, prospects and prospects, confirming a direction that was emphasized when they traded newly-acquired Martin Havlat to Stone Harbor for Paul Ranger and Niklas Hagman. Out West, the big move was from the Seattle Rainiers, who traded most of their future potential in a move to acquire what they need now - scoring (Alexei Kovalev), defense (Brendan Witt) and goaltending (Mike Smith). The Rainiers, who traded Kovalev to Lyndonville nearly ten full years ago (for Adam Deadmarsh), has watched the Russian develop into a star and they are hoping that his return will help them win their third Farley Cup. ********************************************************************* 2008-09 ALL-STAR GAME STARTING LINEUPS ANNOUNCED: Junu Kim and Andy Bartalone will be leading their squads into the annual National Strat-o-Matic Hockey League All-Star Game, to be held in February at Seattle's Key Arena. Neither coach was especially challenged for the role, with Vancouver and St. Michael's coasting to 21- and 9-point leads over their respective conferences. Joining Jim will be two of his own in the starting lineup - centre Henrik Zetterberg and goaltender Niklas Backstrom. Zetterberg already has 44 goals and 87 points while providing stifling defense, while Backstrom is an incredible 38-6 in net for the Whitecaps this season. Other starters for the West will be Topeka's Ilya Kovalchuk, Nicklas Lidstrom of the Aeros, and the Pittsburgh Sound Chaser duo of Jarome Iginla and Scott Niedermayer. The league's leading point scorer Pavel Datsyuk (42-60-102) will be on the flight to Seattle with Bartalone, but he will be joined by teammate Martin St. Louis after one of the tightest votes in league history. St. Louis finished in a three-way-tie with Long Island's Marian Gaborik and Lyndonville's Alexei Kovalev, and commissioner Doug Norris decreed that both Gaborik and St. Louis will be on the team. Kovalev made things a bit easier when he was traded out of the conference at the trade deadline, but Norris said that Kim could select Kovalev if he wanted to. Two defending Cup champion Brooklyn skaters - Alexander Ovechkin and Sergei Gonchar - will join the East, as will Long Island defenseman Zdeno Chara and Pittsburgh Hornets' netminder Ilya Bryzgalov. All star reserves will be selected by Kim and Bartalone, and announced shortly. Although that game resulted in a 5-0 drubbing, the news over the past two weeks was generally positive. The team is 6-2-0 in their past eight games, which includes three shootout victories and one more in overtime (and the regulation victory in Brooklyn was 75 seconds from overtime itself). This doubles the number of OT or shootout victories for the team this season. Other highlights for the last eight games: New addition David Backes tallied three goals and one assist over the eight games. The opponents in both losses each scored five goals, both caused the goalie to be fatigued, and both games were at home. The team will no doubt be working on their power play during the off season, as the Bullies gave up four shorthanded goals in the past eight. The Bullies have decided to end their season as a series of injuries would make any remaining games a particularly hard slog. Sami Pahlsson will be out the rest of the season, joining Joel Kwiatkowski in the suit and tie section of the rink. Peter Schaefer, Ryan Shannon, and Greg de Vries all start multiple game injuries (4 each for the forwards, and 5 for de Vries). The feeling among team management is that there doesn't seem to be a good reason to continue. Manayunk ends its season 27-26-3, 57 points for 56 games. Of course, any players honored with an invitation to the all-star game would be available to play. Tickets sold for games beyond this point will be reimbursed at face value plus tax and service charge. Opponents who were expecting to visit Manayunk or expecting the Bullies to come by can either reschedule for next season, or follow suit and declare their season over. ********************************************************************* OUCH, THAT HURTS! Whitecaps' Crosby, Lupul sprain ankles, could be out until playoffs by Junu Kim, Vancouver owner The Vancouver Whitecaps have spent the first two-thirds of this season getting a leg up on the rest of the NSHL. But ankle injuries to two of its top scorers could hobble the club through at least the rest of the regular season. Center Sidney Crosby and right wing Joffrey Lupul have sustained ankle sprains that Whitecap officials said could put them on ice through the rest of the regular season. Team officials emphasized, though, that they were confident the duo would be available when the playoffs start. While Vancouver hasn't officially qualified for the post-season, it would take a stunning collapse for the team, currently at a sparkling 48-8, to miss out on it. Crosby leads the team in scoring, with 28 goals and 61 assists. His 89 points places him second in the NSHL. Lupul, meanwhile, has tallied 27 goals and 38 assists skating on the Whitecaps' top line. His production marks a major turnaround from his disappointing 2007-08 season, when he scored only three goals in 68 games. Expected to help pick up the offensive slack are two recent arrivals. Veteran center Mats Sundin, acquired from Houston for Patrice Bergeron and Mattias Ritola, is expected to take Crosby's position on the second line and on the main power-play unit. And to further bolster the Whitecaps' power play, Vancouver imported defenseman Mark Streit from Hampton Roads in exchange for Sami Salo and their first round pick in this fall's draft. In addition, winger Chris Clark, who's recovering from a groin injury and has yet to play a game this campaign, is expected to crack the lineup within the next two biweeks. "It's time for us to show we can handle the adversity," said forward Patrick Sharp. "The front office has helped us by bringing in Mats and Mark, but the players are the ones who have to step up without Sid and Joffrey." (Author's note: In the interest of full disclosure, neither Crosby nor Lupul were injured this biweek. But they're about at their max for games played, and my playoff spot seems relatively safe. So I'm not risking them getting hurt until the playoffs.) ********************************************************************* SOMETHING OLD, SOMETHING NEW, SOMETHING BLUE, ALL BORROWED? by Doug Norris, Seattle owner In the powerful Western Conference, the Seattle Rainiers currently sit eighth in the standings at 33-21-0-2. Many think that the Farley Cup has been all but ceded to the Vancouver Whitecaps, currently 31 points higher in the standings than Seattle (and sixteen points ahead of anyone!). But are the Rainiers making their move for their third Cup? All signs point to yes, as the Rainiers dealt most of their future talent to Lyndonville in exchange for something old (former Rainier Alexei Kovalev), something new (new goaltender Mike Smith) and something blue (defenseman Brendan Witt, who played for the WHL Seattle Thunderbirds in his junior days). Kovalev, still one of the league's premier snipers, will immediately join Dany Heatley and Patrick Marleau on the starboard side of the top line. Mike Smith will join a trio of netminders (including Vesa Toskala and Dwayne Roloson) battling over the top job until wonder prospect Jonathan Bernier is ready. Brendan Witt is the question mark, as he seems to bring a lot of what the club already has - tough defensemen, including Chris Chelios, Bryan Allen, Ed Jovanovski and Nick Boynton. Said coach Doug Norris at today's press conference: "Brendan brings his leadership to the club, and his desire to win is hopefully going to infect the rest of us. It's no secret that we haven't shown the fire necessary to win consistently." Their first challenge, of course, is to get out of the first round of the playoffs, and that's where Kovalev, Witt and Smith will make their immediate impact. "Obviously, we don't want to face Vancouver in the conference quarterfinals," said Norris, "and that's where we would start today. Since they're surely going to finish first, that means that we can't finish eighth." ********************************************************************* WEEK THIRTEEN/FOURTEEN RESULTS: Florida 0, at Brooklyn 4 BRK Martin Biron -
