Their latest injured player is the man they brought in last season to help make a run at the Farley Cup, Teemu Selanne. The goal scoring sniper was body checked into the boards against the Vancouver Whitecaps. It was a clean check, but in trying to avoid the hit, Selanne tried to reposition his body. The result was his leg caught the brunt of the collision and the knee became a twisted mess. He was helped off the ice and seen by team doctors. An MRI showed a partial tear of the meniscus. He's expected to miss the rest of the season and the playoff. If by a miracle the Sasquatch make it to the conference finals, he may be eligible to play in that series. Selanne isn't the only Sasquatch to see time on the disabled list. Kyle Calder started the season off with a dislocated shoulder. Colin White's aggressive game caused him to miss 20 games after he lost his footing and slid into the boards feet first. A broken ankle forced him from the line-up when the team needed his defensive presence on the penalty kill. At the same time, Jay Pandolfo went down with a concussion after blocking a shot with his head. Rookie Bobby Ryan, who was selected as Seattle's first pick in the 2008 draft, has a fractured wrist that should keep him out the rest of the season. He's expected to make a full recovery and be ready for next year where he'll probably be a major component to the franchise's future. The blueline has seen a tremendous number of games lost due to injury. Kurt Sauer, Colin White, Brett Clark and even Sean Hill have all spent significant time as injury scratches. What may be the most amusing, Sean Hill was claimed off waivers to help fill games for the team's injured defense. With all these games lost to injury, the bigger question is will the Sasquatch have enough fortitude to retain one of the eight playoff spots? They decided to stand pat when it came to the trade deadline, while across town the Rainiers traded youth for veteran players. One thing seems certain, Nevada sold off a number of quality players in order to get younger. Seattle may be in a position to gain on the Thunder and take the third or fourth place in the Northwest. Will limping into the playoffs be enough to sate the fans' need for winning? The bandwagon jumpers have done it in the past, leaping from one Seattle franchise to the other. Unfortunately the Sasquatch truck is mostly empty by the time the finals begin. ********************************************************************* THE GREAT ICE STORM by Michael Kuduk, Houston owner Occasionally, reality intrudes harshly into our fantasy sports worlds, and this was certainly the case three weeks ago. The weather forecast predicted a major winter storm, however the type of precipitation which was going to fall was up in the air. On the initial Monday night, we had our answer, as it started with sleet and changed over to rain. With the air temperature on the ground a brisk 24 degrees, and with the ground still cold from recent cold snaps, everything froze quickly. We lost power while outside in the barn tending to horses, which we anticipated, as we were out for three days with the last ice storm from 2003. Our house is all electric, including heat, so we were relying on a wood-burning stove for warmth. The first night wasn't too bad. However, during evening trips to stoke the fire, we noticed repeated flashes of light outside. Some of that was thunder and lightning, as heavy rain continued to fall. However, most of it was live power lines hitting the ground in surrounding areas. The second day of no power and the third day of the storm saw an end to the precipitation as snow. The crust on my car told the story - 1/2 inch of sleet, 1 to 1 1/2 inches of rain, and 2 inches of snow. We cleared off the driveway during daylight, ate, and went to bed early....only to be awakened by the smoke alarm at 4:15 AM. A quick check of the house found no smoke, no flames, no heat, and no warm walls, and only a small fire in the stove. However, my wife and I agreed that this was an ideal recipe for a burn-the-house-down fire, so we hustled the "kids" (3 dogs, a kitten, and a rabbit) into my car with all of our important papers, called the fire department, and drove a bit down the driveway, awaiting help. The fire department came, checked out the situation, confirmed that everything was OK, the result of a faulty smoke alarm. However, when they went to leave, the front wheels were stuck in mud and snow, and the back wheels had no traction on the icy driveway. Stuck! It would be another hour before the county road department sent out a backhoe to pull the mired truck from its location. Thankfully, there were no other fires to fight. That was enough for us. We packed up and moved into my office, where we lived for seven more days. My wife took the air mattress out of her horse trailer, and with some sheets and blankets it was certainly livable. No TV, so no Roger Federer, no Super Bowl, no Bruce Springsteen, and no Adam Graves. But it was warm, dry, and safe, and you couldn't beat the commute. I thought I was going to have all sorts of time to catch up on work, but three trips a day back home to stoke the fire and help with the horses ate my days up. Unfortunately, after the storm ended, we had very cold weather for several days, and with minimal heat at home, we had to work to keep the temperature in the house above freezing. During the colder days, the temperature in the kitchen was getting to 36 degrees, 42 in the living room. We had windshield washer fluid in all of the toilets, and left every faucet running at a good trickle (and no, I haven't seen the water bill yet). After a two day thaw, we got 4 inches of snow, and even colder temperatures. The night the power came on, the low was close to 0, and the shower of ice when we turned the heat pump on outside was a sight. We lost no trees, but Mother Nature ended up doing some heavy pruning, so I have been using the warmer weather we have been having to prune out the damaged parts, and to get rid of the widow-makers as best as I can. Nothing like getting in touch with your inner chain-saw. We ended up making it without having any pipes freeze (as far as I can tell). It all makes missing those 1-16 splits look small in comparison. Things must be getting back to normal, however, as when playing this past set of games, I did find myself getting a bit upset at pulling a 17. ********************************************************************* WEEK FIFTEEN/SIXTEEN RESULTS: Buffalo 3, at Brooklyn 4 BRK Sergei Gonchar -
