The National Strat-O-Matic Hockey League Newsletter League Established May 1, 1997 Volume #12, Issue #20 - August 12, 2009 ********************************************************************* Current League Officers: Commissioner: Doug Norris Vice-Commissioner: Brian Leahy (7/15/07 to present) Email the whole league: mailto:nshl at yahoogroups dot com NSHL Chat List: mailto:nshlchat at yahoogroups dot com Web Page Administrator: Guy Caron League Web Site: http://nshl.org Files Adminstrator: Brian Leahy / Tom Vinacci League Files Site: http://www.highrantdistrict.com/SOM/NSHL Team Websites: Capital City Cougars: http://members.tripod.com/~CapCity/ Seattle Rainiers: http://math.colorado.edu/~norrisdt/rainiers/rainiers.html ********************************************************************* THANKS! Brian, Chris, and Rob put forth some excellent articles for this edition of the newsletter - it's much appreciated, and I always love to see these pieces that help to flesh out the league and make it seem real. Also in this newsletter - cutdowns, a job posting, a calendar for the next month-plus, and (finally) voting for the 2008-09 trophies. Thank you all! I'm back with a computer now at home, although am still trying to get data from my damaged original hard drive. This includes my Strat-o-Matic game, although I'll probably just order the new game without an upgrade and worry about recovering the older seasons (if possible) at a later date. ********************************************************************* LOOKING FOR! At the end of the 2008-09 season, I've started thinking about several ways in which my life needs to change. This changed significantly when my hard drive crashed, and also when I failed my spring actuarial exam. And now I'm starting to get friendly with the ladies (okay, one lady). My goal is to keep things running smooth with me staying on as Commissioner. To accomplish this, I've been trying to think of (1) things that I currently do that no longer need to be done, (2) things that I currently do that could be done by someone else, and (3) things that aren't really done by anyone but would make the league feel more like a real league. In that third category, I'm now looking for at least two people to be newsletter Article Czars. What they would do is wrangle articles from league owners, so that each newsletter would have more fun pieces, and the league experience would grow as a result. Ideally, it would be one for each conference, but more would certainly be better. Please let me know if you are interested. Thank you! Oh, and just in case you think that I'm a square or something, you should know that I was once a proud participant in two-thirds of a threesome. ********************************************************************* CALENDAR OF EVENTS: Here's the schedule for what will happen over the next month-plus. Today, August 12th, all teams are now at twenty-six players (or less). Between now and September 19th, teams may trade as many players as they would like, and their roster size can be as large or as small as they desire. Teams may *not* release players. On September 12th, at 11:00am EDT, the 2009 NSHL Entry Draft will begin. This will be a live draft - additional details will follow in the next few weeks. Teams may stop drafting at any time if they desire, and are required to stop drafted upon achieving a 39-player roster. On September 19th, the 2009 NSHL Waiver Draft will take place. This will be a draft via list, and lists must be submitted to the Commissioner no later than September 18th. Teams without a list will not draft, and the Commissioner will draft until a team is at 39 players (unless specifically instructed to the contrary). Beginning September 20th, teams may release and trade players. By the Opening Day of the 2009-2010 NSHL season (tentatively scheduled for either October 7th or October 21st), all teams must have no more than 36 players on their roster. Please let me know if you have any questions! ********************************************************************* TROPHY FINALISTS: Here are this year's finalists for the league's annual end-of-season awards. In order to be on the final ballot, a candidate must have received a number of votes which would place him in the top N (including ties), where N was the maximum one voter was allowed to select. Please return your final ballot to me by the end of August 28th. Although not required to vote, I would love to see everyone vote. All finalists are listed alphabetically. Please e-mail me with any questions or comments. The squad stayed intact the entire season and the chemistry that developed over time was seen as a contributor to Capital City's success getting to the 2nd round of the playoffs. Over the summer, it was clear that the team was getting older and something had to happen in order to reverse the trend. With the Cougars making the playoffs each of the past five seasons, they tended to draft mid-round or lower each time. In addition to that, only a small handful of picks over the years have panned out and could be considered successful so far in their careers. So, Leahy decided to enter trade talks with several teams, hoping that perhaps one or two would result in a favorable offer to improve the team. Within a span of approximately 24 hours, the Cougars GM was able to negotiate four trades. Two of the trades involved a player just acquired in one of the other two deals. In the first trade, the Cougars gave up veteran forwards Pavol Demitra and Todd White. In return, The Nevada sent forwards Drew Stafford and Kyle Wellwood. "This was tough personally because of the many years both Pavol and Todd have been with the club," said Leahy. "But again, we realized we needed to get younger and Nevada showed interest in them and we liked the guys they were offering in return." As that deal was getting finalized, Leahy reached out to Lyndonville to inquire about whether or not they had interest in Stafford. The Cougars and Blades had been discussing a deal, but could not come to the right terms. "Once the Stafford trade was going to happen, we felt we had something that might bridge that gap in talks," said Leahy. Capital City ended up sending Stafford, along with goalie Manny Legace to Lyndonville in exchange for forwards Andy Hilbert, T.J. Hensick and goaltending prospect Ondrej Pavelec. Another deal that took place after a lot of haggling saw the Cougars send center Eric Belanger and their 2nd round pick in the upcoming rookie draft to the St. Michael's Privateers for for center Mikael Grabovski. The interesting tidbit about this deal is that a second trade with Grabovski as the centerpiece was actually finalized the night before the deal was done with St. Michael's. "We came to agreement with (the Pittsburgh Hornets) fairly quickly. Once we did, we were more enthusiastic about working to get a deal done for Grabovski," said Leahy. "It would have been nice to keep him, as well as Stafford in the other deal, but we knew that, at the end of the day, these deals sending them back out helped us acquire more talent to fill more needs." In sending Grabovski to the Hornets, the Cougars got back defenseman Andrew Alberts and wingers Colby Armstrong and Sean Avery. With these trades, the Cougars certainly set out what they were hoping to do in getting younger. The average age of the players departing - 33.75 years. The average age of the incoming players - 25.8 years. NEWS & NOTES With Manny Legace having been traded to Lyndonville, goalies Jonas Hiller and Marty Turco are expected to battle it out for the starting job in training camp. While most think that Hiller has the inside edge due to his playoff heroics last season, Head coach Brian Leahy said that camp and pre-season exhibition games will carry a good amount of weight. While Hiller had a spectacular playoff, Leahy said that both he and Turco had less than stellar records during regular season play. ********************************************************************* THE VIEW by Chris Malitsky, Stone Harbor owner The Stone Harbor Sound announced they have moved franchise goalie, Henrik Lundqvist to the Pittsburgh Hornets. Moving the valued netminder was a tough call, but when a very attractive offer came in to the Sound GM he had to consider the deal. Gone from the team along with Martin Erat and Steve Montador, went the franchise netminder, but in return came a very interesting crop of players, headlined by young center, Sam Gagner. Also in the deal was goalie Ilya Bryzgalov, and solid defensemen Brian Campbell and returning player Derek Morris. The Sound also received the Hornet's second round pick in the upcoming NSHL entry draft. Sound GM Malitsky was intrigued by the offer initiated by the Hornets and pulled the trigger on the deal stating the team needs to take a new direction after many seasons of sub-.500 hockey. He feels the depth of talent introduced by this trade will help the team develop a young basis to moce forward. Looking forward, the team can now build around a lot of youth to go with studs Tomas Vanek, Kyle Turris, Martin Havlat, and Milan Michalek and others as well as a very deep and young defensive core anchored by Campbell and Morris and complimented by Nick Schultz, Jeff Schultz, Brooks Orpik, and Jay McKee. The team also has a dearth of draft picks this year: 2 first rounders, three seconds, and two thirds as well as the first overall pick in the free agent draft to add to their expanding depth. Maybe the team is finally turning the tide. ********************************************************************* NEW LOOK IN SOUTH BEACH by Robert Ryan, Florida owner The Florida Hellcats enter the 2009-10 NSHL season with a fresh, streamlined look and ready to add important prospects at the draft September 12th. Gone are players such as Stu Barnes (retired), Brandon Bochenski (management has given up on him), Chris Gratton, Todd Fedoruk , Staffan Kronwall, David Hale and a fan favorite, George Parros, along with a few others. Brandon Dubinsky, an up and coming center, was traded for a slightly more defensive-minded one in Dominic Moore. Moore will pivot the checking line with scoring ability along with Ryan Callahan and Chris Kunitz. David Booth is expected to man the top left wing spot along with center Matt Stajan and right wing Brad Boyes. Anton Babchuk was added to the roster to bolster the point but it was costly as Topeka wanted defensive stalwart Chris Phillips in return. However, the hidden part of the trade for Florida was the acquisition of goaltender Antero Nittymaki who brings a .912 save percentage with him and will split time with Jaroslav Halak. Also, strong rumors are that Ray Emery has an interest in coming back to the States after his season is over in Russia. Emery had left in a contract dispute with the Cats but wants to make amends as he hates the food over there and never liked Vodka anyway. He also ran out of deodorant and couldn't find any over there. On defense the Hellcats have Christian Ehrhoff and Anton Babchuk on the first pairing with Rob Scuderi and Lubomir Visnovsky on the second. Trevor Daley and Jason Smith will serve as the third pair with Jeff Woywitka and Kevin Klein filling in. Florida is strongly rumored to be taking a defenseman with the 9th overall pick in the upcoming draft, however, if a forward they covet falls to them, they will change gears and go with the defensemen they have. Scoring should be up with the forwards Florida has such as Ryan Clowe and Daymond Langkow and the goaltending should do well, but the defense is still lacking a presence. A trade might be needed but it would most likely happen later in the season as the new defensemen need the work early on. Parros is expected to be re-signed. All in all, the management of the Hellcats is expecting a better season than last year, which was a surprise as Florida finished .500, better than expected. Florida has 8 picks in the draft, only requiring them to sign one player from the waiver draft who will be a good player at the #9 pick. ********************************************************************* OVERUSAGE PENALTIES: Here are the 2008-09 overusage penalties as sent to the mailing list on August 4th. You may wish to protest these penalties to the Review Board, but please do so as soon as possible.
