Trade season came to the league over the past three weeks, and it came hard - both in terms of quality and in terms of quantity. Will this cause the other league leaders to react? Who's going to win the battle for Tavares/Hedman/Duchene? Thank you to Chris, Pat, and Mike for their excellent articles - there are some interesting thought topics in Mike's. Let's get to the articles! ********************************************************************* VIEW FROM THE CLIFF: FANS WELCOME GABORIK ADDITION by Chris Malitsky, Stone Harbor owner The Stone Harbor Sound have quietly been collecting additional draft picks. Because of that they were able to deal their own 1st, 2nd, and 3rd round picks along with TPK's 1st to acquire sniper Marian Gaborik from Long Island. The deal did not deplete the Sound's arsenal of picks as they still have PIH's #1 and VAW's #2 to draft younger players next season. The key to the deal for LIB was getting the Sound's 1st round pick, most assuredly a top ten pick as well as three additional picks in the first three rounds. The Sound fans are overwhelmingly excited about the addition of Gaborik. Despite a history of injuries, when healthy he is a force to be reckoned with. Gaborik joins another sniper in Tomas Vanek, to give the Sound a legitimate 1-2 punch in the scoring department. The team has been building around youth upfront, to include Sam Gagner, Patrik Berglund, Milan Michalek, David Jones, Kyle Turris, Chris Stewart, and quite a few others. On defense, the team has a solid threesome of young players in Jeff and Nick Schultz, and Brooks Orpik, as well as potential surprise Kyle Cumiskey. In net Ilya Bryzgalov will look to log most of the minutes afte rthe departure of Henrik Lundqvist. The team has moved two franchise goalies lately in Ludqvist and Ryan Miller, as they looked for talent in front of net after attempting to build around the net initially years ago after failed attempts with Marc Denis and Dan Blackburn. The Sound appear to be looking for the right combination to turn the corner and begin to field a team that can begin to show winning ways. The team has a history of trading in binges, but Sound GM Malitsky denied there are any other deals in the works. He must be hopeful the combination of two snipers leading a talented, but youthful bunch can change the team's direction. ********************************************************************* THE END OF A REBUILD by Alan Smithee (and by Patrick Shea, Long Island owner) Trading two-thirds of your top line for draft picks is risky business, especially considering the surprising success in Uniondale this season. Hopefully fans will recognize that after this year Hudler won't be back in the NSHL for at least two seasons and Gaborik, while enjoying a career season in the NHL, is very fragile this year and a ranger. In fact he was shopped almostimmediately after signing there in the NHL this summer. Pragmatically, as the offers were underwhelming at the time, LIB chose to wait and move Gaborik when his trade value was higher. Now, in what is the final stage of a rebuilding effort, Long Island is poised to go climb back to the top of the league. As rebuilds go this was fairly painless, only one season out of the playoffs, but now the cupboard is loaded for the future. It started the year after LIB won it's last Farley Cup. Long Island stalwarts like Steve Rucchin, Teppo Numminen, Jeremy Roenick and Markus Naslund were all traded in an attempt to get younger. It was a tough day for the fans of the defending champs, but one that is finally starting to pay dividends. Here is what went down.: - Traded LIB#2 to FLO for Todd Bertuzzi. - Traded Todd Bertuzzi to STM for Bruno Gervais and STM#3. - TRADE Kyle McLaren and Jeremy Roenick to BRK for Jiri Hudler and Tom Poti. - TRADE Markus Naslund, Teppo Numminen and Steve Rucchin to CCC for Marian Gaborik and Radek Martinek. - TRADE Mike Van Ryn, Glen Wesley and VAW#4 to HOU for Mike Komisarek and HOU#2. - TRADE Sergei Fedorov to NEV for NEV#3. While the draft picks acquired that day didn't really amount to much, with the exception of Todd Bertuzzi, who was a one week rental, all the players dealt that day are out of the NHL (Van Ryn is in fact injured and still has not retired.) What's left: Radek Martinek, injury prone but quality player Tom Poti, see above. Bruno Gervais, Young improving defenseman, likely a fixture on the LIB 3d pairing for years to come. Mike Komisarek, Tough crease clearer, a fan favorite for a long time. Marian Gaborik, well, now he's gone. In return, four picks in 2010. Jiri Hudler, fled to the KHL, now is BUF #2 in the 2010 draft. The single best move was a stroke of luck, when Commissioner Norris announced the results of the 2007 draft lottery which enabled Shea and the Berserkers to draft Evgeni Malkin first overall. Thankfully this almost makes you forget about how brutal the rest of that draft went that day. Despite the loss of Gaborik and Hudler and the uncertainty of Franzen's effectiveness, the stable will be even deeper up front next season with the NHL success of young players like Patric Hornqvist, Darrol Powe, Derek Dorsett, Matt Moulson and Gilbert Brule. With three picks in the first round and three in the second, in what is a very top heavy draft this year, Long Island stands likely to be able to draft a quality young player and some decent prospects. Guys like Tyler Myers, John Tavares, Matt Duchene, and James Van Riemsdyk would all be able to step right in next season and contribute. Last year's first rounder, Alex Pietrangelo, is not expected to provide any real impact for quite a few years, but with a fairly deep blue line there is no need to rush him, especially with the recent NHL play of young Jack Hillen. Despite the loss of scoring, Shea feels the team is equipped with enough firepower to take a good run at the Farley Cup. The biggest problem up until now this season has been bad penalties and poor penalty killing. Newly acquired Rob Niedermayer and Andy Hilbert should both be able to step right in to the lineup and play lots of quality minutes while improving the penalty killing. Neither are seen as long term solutions but team management feels that the team is now better equipped to go further in the playoffs. The flexibility that these veteran players provide up front will also keep LIB from having to rely so much on young players like Powe, Eager and Dorsett who have very high penalty ratings this season. ********************************************************************* THE NSHL PHILOSOPHER, vol. 1 by Mike Kuduk, Houston owner A rather grandiose title, I must admit. However, I'd like to start a series of articles reflecting on how we play our NSHL games, how we build our NSHL teams, parallels and dissimilarities between our world and the NHL's, and how Strat quite frequently imitates life, both on and off the ice. Qualifications? Pretty skimpy on my part, I must admit. This is my third year running the Aeros, and I was fortunate enough to inherit a well-built team. However, you all might remember I spent a year running the New York Lancers (nee Pittsburgh Hornets), and spent at least a year following the league from the outside as a non-member, trying to see if it lived up to its reputation as one of the best Strat leagues out there, in any sport. (It does. Big time.) And its newsletter is absolutely second to none, even if I still have no idea how Dr. Doug comes up with his power ratings. So, hopefully, if I am willing to contribute, you all will be willing to listen. And feel free to comment, either privately or publicly. I'll start with a quote from league guru, and all-around good guy, Junu Kim. When I was running the Lancers, I was having all sorts of issues winning games. Thinking it was my coaching or the way I set up my lines, I asked Junu for some advice as to how I could improve my coaching. His response was simple: "Get better players." Let's see....back to the Aeros. My first year in the league was three years ago, and I inherited an immediate Farley Cup contender. The team was deep at all positions, and my fourth line players were better than many other teams' third lines. After a sluggish start, Houston caught fire, and rifled through the regular season. We won the first two series before hitting a roadblock in a very strong Nevada team, and the only way we made it to the Farley Cup final was luck, as we overcame a 3-1 deficit to win the series in seven. That was it, as Brooklyn beat us handily in five games. That summer, when performing many of the mundane things a gentleman farmer has to do in the warmer weather, I reflected at length on what else I could have done to put us over the top. (I said this was philosophy. And it takes two hours on the tractor to cut the front field.) On paper, we had no holes, and at the trade deadline, we looked totally solid, so I didn't make any future-for-now moves. In retrospect, one more scorer or one more two-way forward might have made the difference. Then again, the Cup final was going to hinge strictly on the play of a certain Alex Ovechkin. If we contain him, we win. If we don't, we lose. And we had the defenders to do it in Richards, Nash and Doan. Alex was at the peak of his game, and Brooklyn was the champs. Last year, despite looking good on paper, our team had some chemistry issues. After whining about officiating and penalties against for several weeks, I decided to do the semi-intelligent thing and look at my team, thinking that perhaps there was a reason for all of the penalties against. Well, well - there's Doan, Richards and Nash again, defenders who can score and who get a lot of ice time - all B penalty rated. And as the powerplay chances against mounted, I realized our chances of going far in the playoffs were getting slimmer and slimmer. I traded Mats Sundin for an injured Patrice Bergeron, rolling the dice, but realizing I had little to lose. As for the playoffs - Topeka beat us in seven games in the first round, in a spirited series. Really spirited - and really close - as the series was decided in the waning moments of game seven on an outside shot split by Topeka's fourth line. This year, the penalty problem looked better, as all but Rick Nash were able to control their tempers. We had some players hurt, but we also had some players improve, and I could put three solid lines out, two excellent defensive pairs, and we had some good goaltending as well. After a snarky comment during last year's playoffs about "twenty game fruit loops" (good cards with limited playing time), I went out and got some in the (hated) waiver draft, one or two of whom may actually stick with the team. We started off well, and opened up a comfortable lead in our division. We were even starting to make the long climb up Dr. Doug's power chart. Then, the trade wires lit up. Two of the teams behind me were acquiring talent at a fierce pace - I mean serious saber rattling. I played one of the teams the next bi-week, and I didn't recognize half of the team. But - that team was suddenly a whole lot better than mine. Great, now what? Do I push the panic button and respond trade for trade? What am I going to have to give up to get scorer X, who also happens to be 38 years old? Should I start to dismantle the core of this team which had been so artfully built by my predecessor? What to do? I found the answer by asking a bigger question. It's one that relates to Strat leagues, and life in general. How do you measure your accomplishments? Is it by the number of league championships you win? Or is it by the overall level of excellence, playing well every year? That same question relates to life in general - would you rather have one or two high peaks of marked success and a few valleys, or would you rather have a steadily high level of achievement without ever making it to the top of the mountain? By now, you all know how I've chosen to answer the question as it pertains to this year's NSHL. We've stood pat. We will try our hardest in the playoffs, knowing our team is not the best. But we will be back next year, and the year after that. I've decided that being competitive year in and year out is the way I want to go, and our current core of players will allow us to do that. We may get lucky in a playoff series or two, and, perhaps, a few years down the line, all of the pieces may fall into place. But for now, I'm happy with a seat at the table. Comments are welcome. Take care, Mike ********************************************************************* RAINIERS BACK IN FIERCE DIVISION FIGHT by Doug Norris, Seattle Rainiers owner Now that the Seattle Rainiers are back in competition for a division title (and perhaps grander glories?), they find themselves in a familiar position - neck and neck in the toughest division in the league, the mighty Northwest. Seattle fell back a bit over Week 11/12, and now find themselves eight points back of the star-studded Vancouver Whitecaps, and five points back of the Fort Garry Fiddler Crabs. So will Seattle make a move over the next few weeks? It seems unlikely. Although it's undoubtable that the Rainiers could use another top-pairing blueliner, Seattle management has historically shown an unwillingness to trade from their stable of prospects for help now. "We trust what we do in the draft, and we don't like to react to short-term wants. We feel that this helps us be more consistent over the long haul," said general manager Doug Norris at least fall's entry draft. And which names would be on the move, either for a blueliner or for an additional goal scorer? Derick Brassard? Nikolai Kulemin? It could be an interesting month of February in the Enerald City. Or, it could be business as usual. ********************************************************************* WEEK ELEVEN/TWELVE RESULTS AND INJURIES: Nevada Thunder 2, Brooklyn Fourteenth 4 BRK DAVID
