A lot of good stuff in this edition, including some big playoff recaps. Dale Ripley joins us as our newest owner, and there are new enforcement rules for long-running playoff series listed below. After their loss to Nevada, please see the postseries press conference with Houston owner Mike Kuduk. Fiery stuff! ********************************************************************* CONFERENCE QUARTERFINAL REVIEW: The big upset of the first round finished in Las Vegas, where the hometown Thunder knocked off conference power Houston in six games. Miroslav Satan had two goals and an assist for Las Vegas, who stole the opening game of the series in Houston en route to the surprise win. The Thunder's reward are the Western Conference regular-season champions, the Vancouver Whitecaps, who defeated the Seattle Sasquatch in four straight. The plucky Sasquatch could manage just four goals on Vancouver's stingy defense, while the Whitecap offense contributed fifteen goals of their own. The other team in Seattle, the Rainiers, knocked off divisional rival Fort Garry in a prolonged seven-game tilt. The Jekyll-and-Hyde Rainiers overcame a three-games-to-one deficit on the heels of a goaltending switch, with Mike Smith coming in and curbing a potent Fort Garry offense. Smith's 36-save shutout performance in Game Seven will likely earn him the starting nod in the semifinals. Smith and the Rainiers will be facing a tough Topeka Tarantula squad, who shut down Kansas City in four consecutive matches in the league's first "all Kansas" playoff contest. Ilya Kovalchuk, as he often is, was the sparkplug for the Tarantulas, earning four assists in game one, scoring both goals in game two, and assisting on both goals in the overtime game four thriller. The Scouts' loss was tempered by rumours that the franchise will soon be leaving its new home after just one year. All four series in the Eastern Conference went chalk, although there was nearly a 7-beats-2 scenario here as well. In an all-Netplay series, the seventh-seeded Bulldogs stretched the Long Island Berserkers to a seventh game. The Berserkers brought their offense in the ultimate game, putting eight goals past an overwhelmed Cam Ward. Long Island now gets Montreal, who dispatched the Florida Hellcats in a surprisingly-short four games. None of the four contests were particularly close (with only a 4-2 game three win being within two goals) as the Wanderers rolled on all cylinders. Could Montreal be a darkhorse candidate to come out of the East? As good as the Wanderers performed in their conference quarterfinal series, they didn't score double digits in any game. In fact, no one did in 2010, with the exception of the Lyndonville Blades. Seemingly angry that the club couldn't finish off Corner Creek in game four, the Blades put up a 10-1 margin of victory in the deciding game five. Nine different Lyndonville players scored, and fifteen players tallied points. The Blades get top-seeded St. Michael's, who were taken to five games by the Pittsburgh Hornets. The only playoff team with a losing record, the 32-43-3-4 Hornets did all they could, but were turned back by an impressive offense led by Pavel Datsyuk. *************************************************************************** NEW SCOUT IN TOWN: Please welcome Dale Ripley to the fold as the newest owner of the Kansas City Scouts organization. Dale has been waiting in the wings since September of 2007, and has played countless games as an associate while biding his time. Actually, the number of games was counted, so the previous statement is a figure of speech. I think that this is the case, but I hope that Dale is as excited to join us as we are to have him. With all good news in this category comes a measure of bad news, as Dean Engemoen has decided to step down from his post for the second time in his long NSHL career. We hope that Dean will stick around in some capacity, although the particularities of the SOM game engine do not suit his tastes. *************************************************************************** NEW ENFORCEMENT: In the event that a playoff series runs long, the Commissioner may assign (up to) a number of incentive points equal to the number of days the series runs late. The Commissioner will assign these points in proportion equal to his interpretation of the causes of the delays. The Commissioner does not have to assign a full cohort of incentive points, and all points assigned may be petitioned to the Review Board. Comment and discuss, please. *************************************************************************** AEROS POSTSEASON PRESS CONFERENCE by Michael Kuduk, Houston owner We expected an earful from Houston Aeros GM Mike Kuduk after their first round upset by Nevada, but, even by his standards, he was in rare form. Some highlights: Q: After winning the final two games of the season to edge out Topeka for the division title, losing in the first round must be a disappointment. How do you feel about it? MK: This is probably one of the low moments of my career, as well as my staff's. To tell you the truth, it absolutely sucks. Probably the only thing I can think of which sucks more right now is having to answer more of your questions. Q: What happened? MK: Where do you want to start? Q: Er... MK: Boy, you all are so full of intelligent comments tonight... Q: What happened to the Houston goaltending? MK: We had no goaltending on the road in this series. I was half tempted to tell Shanny to strap on the pads and go out there, as Tomas was terrible. Tomas had a rough stretch mid season, and I challenged him publicly to play better, saying that he was bad when the chips were down and was letting our team down. He did nothing this series to disporve that. Q: So will Houston have a new goalie next season? MK: We'll see. I still like Tomas' potential, but we have some technique issues which need to be worked out. But our bad performance in the three road games was a total team effort. Q: How did a team like Nevada who finished almost 20 points behind you and whom you dominated during the regular season turn around and dominate you in the playoffs? MK: You tell me. Q: (microphones and tape recorders rattling) MK: This started in game 1 when we dominated for two periods and led 2-0, then allowed 3 third period goals. That turned the series around, and we never recovered. I can't blame Tomas for that one, Biron was spectacular and kept his team in it. Vokoun had no work in that game until the third period. Q: What about the Morrow major penalty? MK: I'l take the blame for that one. Brendan has been hurt all year, and Guerin made a play on him he couldn't counter, so Morrow hauled him down. The stick got in the way, but the ref had to call it. Morrow shouldn't have been out there in a tie game situation late with the game on the line. Q: And what happened on the road? MK: We stunk. Our team gave up five goals or more only nine times all year, and Vokoun was in net for only three of them. So we go on the road had give up five goals three games in a row? How? You tell me; I'm still trying to figure that one out. Q: What role did special teams play in the series? MK: Nobody could kill a penalty to save their life. And in game 3, we had four straight powerplay chances at the end of the game, and could not convert. Q: Are you planning any coaching changes? MK: We have made one already. And no, it's not Dave Tippett, though he may still want to leave after our last conversation. Nick Fotiu has agreed to step down as assistant coach, and I am pleased to introduce Brendan Shanahan as our new assistant coach. Brendan has been a part of some of our more sucessful seasons here in Houston, and we need his help in instilling a better work ethic in this team. Shanny knows how to win, and he will not tolerate underachievement, which we have plenty of right now. Chris Osgood has asked us about becoming our new goaltending coach, and we will be talking with him about the position at length later on this week. Q: Topeka made a lot of moves at the trade deadline to bolster their team for the playoffs, and you stood pat. Do you regret not making any moves yourself? MK: (silence....) This press conference is over. ********************************************************************* TOPEKA UP NEXT FOR RAINIERS by Doug Norris, Seattle owner Being divisional rivals, it was surprising to most that the Seattle Rainiers and Fort Garry Fiddler Crabs had never met in the Farley Cup tournament. After this series, the clubs can certainly say that their not-so-friendly relationship has been taking to the next level. The Rainiers were on the ropes early in Game Four, with the Crabs pelting Dwayne Roloson with quality scoring chance after quality scoring chance. Roloson notched a 6-0 shutout in Game Two, but otherwise had little answer for the Crabs' assault. Enter Mike Smith. Acquired from Lyndonville late in the 2008-09 campaign, Smith has been little more than secondary support for Roloson. And Smith's third period performance left little hint as to what was to come. Fort Garry came ten minutes away from eliminating Seattle in five games, before Ed Jovanovski and Dany Heatley sent the teams back to Canada for Game Six. But it was Smith who held the Rainiers in the contest (22 saves), before stopping 35 shots (6/8 GR) to even the series. Then Smith turned in the best performance of his career - a 2-0 shutout win to send the Rainiers to the conference semifinals. Smith stopped thirty-six shots, including all seven Goalie Ratings, as Fort Garry's all-star roster of Joe Thornton, Roberto Luongo, Marian Hossa and the rest went home disappointed once more. Smith will get the nod in Game One against the Tarantulas, after his strong finish to the Fort Garry series. Although Roloson would love the opportunity, he understands: "Mikey has it going right now, and the best thing I can do is to be here if and when the club needs me. I know what I'm capable of," said the man who backstopped the Rainiers to the 2007 Farley Cup. It is certain that Seattle will be without playmaking wing Alex Tanguay, who did not accompany the club on its charter flight to Topeka. "He has a hockey injury, and we expect him back shortly," told coach Norris to the Seattle media. ********************************************************************* TROPHY NOMINEES! I'm going to wait to process these until after my (April 30) exam, since there is no real pressure to get them done, and since some of you *still* have not sent me your nominees. Please do so! Brian and I will also handle overusage penalties at that time. I am happy to report that this year's instances are all minor (thank you!) *************************************************************************** 2010 EASTERN CONFERENCE SEMIFINALS: #4 LYNDONVILLE BLADES at #1 ST.
