Congratulations to the St. Michael's Privateers, who just became the first team in NSHL history to capture back-to-back Farley Cup championship titles. After defeating Topeka in five games in 2009, the Privateers knocked off powerful Vancouver in five games, finishing their season on home ice with a 4-2 win over the Whitecaps. Home ice was St. Michael's' forte in the 2010 playoffs, going a perfect 13-0 at their home rink. In the deciding Game Five, the Privateers had to overcome a great game by Whitecap centre Henrik Zetterberg (goal, assist, four takeaways), with Nikolai Antropov pacing the victors with a goal and an assist of his own. The Privateers join Long Island, the Seattle Rainiers, and Brooklyn as the NSHL's two-time champions. Andy, enjoy the spotlight (and the target on your back) for the next twelve months! *************************************************************************** MINOR NOTES: Trading is now open. Have at it! Thank you to Andy and Jeff for their articles this issue! A good combination of retrospective (Cup parade) and prospective (draft talk). I still owe the league trophy nominees (on the other hand, more than one owner still owes me their nominees), overusage penalties, draft order, and draft lists - those will be coming in the next few weeks (aside from work trips, I am still attempting to catch up on my goaltender web page). The 2010 NSHL entry draft will occur on Saturday, September 11. Please get your Constitutional proposals in to Patrick and myself as soon as possible. *************************************************************************** PRIVATEERS PARADE EXTRA by Andy Bartalone, St. Michael's owner June 17 Yesterday was the last day of school for most youngsters in Talbot County and just about everyone in Easton, Wye Mills, Tilghmann Island and St. Michaels are here for the parade for thier Farley Cup Champion St. Michael's Privateers. Banners can be seen everywhere here that read, "We are keeping the Cup". They are expecting folks from everywhere in Maryland and Delaware, as well as the District cf Columbia, Virginia and West Virginia. The atmosphere is a steady stream of excitement, the parade had originally been planned for tomorrow morning, but the planning committee was reminded that the U.S plays Slovenia in South Africa at the World Cup, so rather than wait until next week, they moved it up a day. The parade finished about noon and the players and staff have been mingling with the fans all afternoon. A good time has been had by all. Next comes the off-season and some contracts are ending, the front office has to make some decisions about some players. But today is a day to enjoy. *************************************************************************** TYLER MYERS VISITS BROOKLYN AHEAD OF DRAFT by Jeff Tsuruoka, Brooklyn owner Defenceman Tyler Myers knew he was in for a wild ride when Brooklyn Fourteenth players Steve Downie and Brooks Laich met him at Kennedy Airport. "They said they were there to show me around and stuff. I was pretty honored -I mean, Brooksy flew in from Alberta for the occasion. I don't know where Downer came in from. First thing we did was throw my gear in the car and race over to Coney Island to check out the girls there. It just went downhill from there." Myers grinned and added, "In a good way." "We just wanted him to get to know the area a little," said Laich. "There's so much to do and see. We figured we'd just throw him to the wolves and see how it went." According to Myers it went just fine. "An absolute blast," were his exact words. Things got even crazier when the trio drove out to Long Beach to meet Alex Ovechkin for some wind surfing. "That was insane. Insane," said Myers. "I think he had fun," said Ovechkin. "He never did the wind surfing before. Me either. It was crazy, man. He's a good kid." Ovechkin then sprung for new clothes for all four of the crew and drove them into Manhattan for a night on the town. When asked about Myers' underage status Ovechkin was ambivalent. "He's big guy. Guy that big has to be at least twenty one." When asked what he thought about having three of his most important players and the kid the team is all but certain to take with the first overall pick in September in one car hurtling towards the city team owner Jeff Tsuruoka just shook his head. "I think Downie's the designated driver. That alone scares the crap out of me." He also said that he made sure to have some team employees along for the ride (they had quite a time keeping up with Ovechkin on the way into the city) to make sure that everyone got home in one piece without any police involvement. Said an exhausted-looking Tyler Myers awaiting his flight home, "This is going to be fun." *************************************************************************** 2010 FARLEY CUP FINAL RESULTS: #1 VANCOUVER WHITECAPS at #1 ST.
