Although technical difficulties hindered two owners, spirits were generally in good shape today. After taking a step back from the 2008-09 division championship, the Pittsburgh Hornets were looking to make a splash today, and make a splash they did. After a trade with Stone Harbor set the Hornets with the Sound's first three 2011 draft choices, Pittsburgh packaged all three choices, along with their own first-rounder (ninth overall) and Vancouver's second-rounder and defenseman Keith Yandle, sending all to the Brooklyn Fourteenth to receive Brooklyn's first-overall pick and star blueliner Sergei Gonchar. The Hornets then used the top pick to draft centre Matt Duchene of the OHL's Brampton Battalion. Opinions were split as to which of the "big four" would be taken number one, but you can't go wrong with Duchene. Quebec City then drafted the other consensus franchise centre in the draft, London (OHL)'s John Tavares. Depending on what the club does with pivot Daniel Briere, Tavares may step in as the club's first-line centre as early as training camp. Briere may be the best selection in NSHL entry draft history, falling to 182nd overall in the 2001 draft. Two franchise defensemen went next, with Long Island taking Kelowna (WHL) blueliner Tyler Myers, and Capital City drafting Modo (Sweden)'s Victor Hedman. Capital City had two picks in the first seven, taking Hedman and Boston University centre Colin Wilson. Tradtionally, the top goaltender in the entry draft goes quite early; however, this year's crop featured no strong prospects, and Long Island took AIK netminder Jonas Gustavsson twenty-second overall. Minneapolis then continued their annual tradition of taking a netminder in the first round, selecting Kamloops goaltender Devan Dubnyk. Overall, twelve defensemen were taken in the first round, with twelve forwards and two goaltenders. *************************************************************************** WHAT NEXT? Waiver draft lists are due by the end of Friday. Unless you tell us otherwise, we will draft for you until you have reached thirty-nine rostered players. I am looking for a volunteer to help with the 2010 waiver draft. Since everyone drafts via list in the waiver draft, I like to have two people process the lists and produce draft results - and then compare the results to greatly reduce the possibility of an error (as you know, there are many highly-coveted players in the annual waiver draft). If you are interested in helping, please let me know by Friday. The 2010 NSHL waiver draft will occur on Saturday, September 18 (although I'm climbing Mount Elbert that day, so my work will be done later in the evening). After the waiver draft, you will have until the season-opening newsletter to have your team at thirty-six rostered players or fewer. *************************************************************************** CALENDAR OF EVENTS: September 17 - all teams must submit waiver draft lists September 18 - 2010 NSHL Waiver Draft October 13 - Opening Day, 2010-11 NSHL regular season! *************************************************************************** ASSOCIATE LIST: SINCE GP Francois Lessard December 10, 2006 8 Steve Kramer December 13, 2004 0 Greg Ralls December 14, 2004 0 Andrew Smith November 19, 2005 0 J.J.
