With Rick Nash (12 goals, 9 assists) and Mike Richards (9 goals, 10 assists) pacing the way, the Aeros are now 17-5-2, and could seal the division with a strong Week 7/8. Out East, the two-time defending Cup champion St. Michael's Privateers are facing some stiff competition from Stone Harbor. Marian Gaborik is healthy, and his 32 points lead three players (Brandon Dubinsky, Lee Stempniak) who have ten or more goals. You'll find Player of the Week and Goalie of the Week in this newsletter - see below! Also the first return of the Norris Power Index (since I lost my UNIX account). I had to code it from scratch, and I'll make some improvements along the way, but it's a good start. Thank you to Jason, Michael, and Doug for their great newsletter articles this biweek - we've got a great mix of interesting stuff! *************************************************************************** HAWKS CONTINUE SHOPPING SPREE by Jason McCorrister, North Calgary owner "Hockey is fun again," says team captain Eric Staal. "It's been a tough few years here, but we are finally turning it around." The NC Hawks have continued their incredible rebound season by posting a 15-9-0 record after 24 games. Last bi-week management made a move to improve the Hawks' depth and penalty killing by swapping sniper Nathan Horton for Ryan Callahan and Dennis Wideman. This bi-week, the team went out and got the kind of veteran player who could really help push the team into the top group in the conference. The Hawks traded highly touted prospect and 26 overall pick in the 2009 draft, Michael Backlund along with three other prospects for the rights to Topeka's Daniel Alfredsson. You could see it coming. With Steven Stamkos' strong start to the season and the team's early success, the Hawks have been turned into buyers after re-tooling for four long years. Put Alfredsson alongside Stamkos and Staal and you've got a line that can skate with any other in the league. Even though Callahan was playing very well on that first line, adding the grit the Hawks have been lacking for a long time, what the team really needed was a guy who could carry the puck up ice and feed the other two. Alfredsson is just that kind of player and will fit in nicely on the top line. Look for him in the league leaders for assists in the coming months. Just when it looked like Stamkos was cooling off with only 12 points in the third bi-week, the Hawks have found him a new and talented linemate. Will Alfredsson help Steve pick up his goal totals in the next bi-week? Stay tuned! Stamkos Watch: 24GP 30-11-41 *************************************************************************** TIPPETT TIRADE STIRS AEROS by Michael Kuduk, Houston owner Last month, when the season was still young, the Areos faithful were treated to get another post-game public tantrum from their tempermental coach, Dave Tippett. After a second consecutive shootout loss to bitter rival Topeka at Topeka, Tippett went nuts. He cracked one stick, bent another, and threw out a few water bottles for good measure. He must have been pretty mad, becuase the boards in front of the Houston bench had to be repaired, and GM Mike Kuduk was none too pleased to receive the bill. That night, Tippett explained that he was not mad at his players, but for them. "Everyone - everyone - was out there working theis butts off tonight. The kind of work which wins hockey games. The kind of work which makes you an elite team. I haven't seen that from this team in the past two seasons, and I've seen it the past two games. We lost both, and we deserve to lose neither. I want this team to know that I appreciated what I saw the past two games, and that if they continue to play this way, they will be there at the end." The team listened. After a shaky 2-4 start (2-2 in shootouts), the team gelled on a four game road trip to the Aeros' traditional rivals - Cap City, Vancouver, Seattle, and Fort Garry, winning all four games by sizeable margins. Houston lost to Manayunk on home ice, then reeled off another 6 wins, and finished this bi-week both 3-1 at home and on the road. Goaltending, a big question mark last year, has solidified, as Tomas Vokoun has a lot more confidence. New blueliner Erik Karlsson has been a pleasant surprise. Rick Nash has refound his focus, and the special teams both ways are much improved. And coach Dave Tippett has been having much quieter press conferences. *************************************************************************** ALFIE MOVES ON by Doug North, Topeka owner TOPEKA - Despite a decent start to the 2010 NSHL season, GM Doug North knew a tough decision to make this early in the season. "We have injuries coming to some key players," North said. "We have guys like Brent Burns, Ales Hemsky, Sheldon Souray, and Andrei Kostitsyn are going to miss significant parts to the season. As an organization we had to decide if we wanted to try and tread water this season while our veteran roster gets another year older or start to replenish the cupboard." The answer came today as TPK swapped Daniel Alfredsson for 4 players. The players coming back to the Taranulas include wingers Mikael Backlund, Maksim Mayorov, and Jannik Hansen as well as defenseman Jonas Junland. "We are excited about the 4 players we were able to acquire," said North. "We know we are giving up a top talent in Alfie, but we were able to get a lot younger and added some depth to our roster." The Spiders indeed do get younger as Hansen (24) is the oldest player acquired in the trade. Junland (23) and Mayorov (21) will need time to develop as will the main piece in the deal for the Taranulas the 21 year old Backlund. For fans hoping this Swede will replace THE Swede right away, North had some advice. "We feel Mikael can be a great player here in time. For now we need to have a little bit of patience and let him develop." There will no doubt be some pressure on the youngster from the fans and from within. "Alfie was my idol growing up in Sweden," said Backlund who is scheduled to report to Kansas later this week. "I mean I had his poster on my wall and watched him whenever I could growing up. To be traded for him.......I really don't know what to think right now." Despite being traded again by Topeka, Alfredsson had nothing but good things to say about his second stint in with the Spiders. "I had some nice runs during my first stay here and to come back last season was something I'll never forget. We had a team I thought was able to win the Cup but we came up just short." Now he goes to North Calgary where.....you guessed it......another Cup run is expected. "I look at the team (Jason) McCorrister has put together and it's impressive," said Alfredsson. "I mean Parise, Staal and that kid Stamkos is tearing it up so far this year. Maybe this time I can help a team get over the hump." Here's hoping you do well, Alfie!!!! *************************************************************************** GIVING THANKS by Michael Kuduk, Houston owner It wouldn't be Thanksgiving without an article about what the NSHL coach/GM is thankful for: - The Rangers actually haven't traded all of their young talent away. Their games may actually be watchable in the near future. - The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, for doing hockey right, overly patriotic former Bruins coach notwithstanding. - Despite being surrounded by negativity, the Islanders are still playing in Nassau County. Hockey will not be the same for this fan if they leave. - Jacques Martin, for bringing quality hockey back to Montreal. - Mike Babcock, for keeping quality hockey in Hockeytown. - Pat Burns, for all he did for the game. - The 4th Winter Classic, as what was once a curiosity has become a major event. And for the NSHL: - The Norris power ratings are coming back. - The newsletter. Tell me you don't drop what your doing to read it when it shows up in your in box. - Playoff upsets which create big rivalries the next year. It makes the games a whole lot more fun to play. - Junu, who is always there to help if anyone needs it. - Doug and Brian, who run one of the best Strat leagues anywhere, any sport. *************************************************************************** SOMETHING OLD, SOMETHING NEW by Doug Norris, Seattle Rainiers owner The Seattle Rainiers knew going into the 2010-11 campaign that they would have trouble maintaining their defensive depth. With five blueliners (Cody Franson, Ed Jovanovski, Kyle Cumiskey, Adam Pardy, Bobby Sanguinetti) already having gone down to injury in this young season, things finally reached critical status. Enter Darryl Sydor. From 1997 to 1998, Sydor played 107 regular season games for the Rainiers, before being shuttled off to the expansion New Jersey River Rats in exchange for defensive forward Radek Dvorak. Sydor was a key cog in the (then-)Pirates' run to the 1998 Farley Cup Finals, and general manager Doug Norris was eager to welcome him back. "Darryl plays Rainier hockey," said Norris at today's press conference. "He's a bit older now, but he's not going to hurt you out there, and he'll provide the valuable depth we crave." The Rainiers also picked up defenseman Brett Lebda from the Minneapolis Massasauga today, in exchange for utilityman Scott Walker. Lebda and Sydor will both report immediately to the club as they face Stone Harbor before embarking upon a three-game divisional road trip. Languishing in ninth place in the Western Conference, the Rainiers need a solid Week 7/8, or they'll have to cash in their chips. *************************************************************************** CALENDAR OF EVENTS: November 24 - Week 7-8, National Strat-o-Matic Hockey League 2010-11 November 26 - all computer managers Marleau totalled four goals and fifteen points for the senior Emerald City squad, and the two-way forward was also plus-ten on the biweek. Seattle is still fighting for a playoff spot in a tough Western Conference, and they're going to need all the help from their alternate captain. Other top competitors this biweek include Mikko Koivu, Steven Stamkos, and Jarome Iginla. Week 1/2: Steven Stamkos, North Calgary (10g 3a 5TA 48SOG) Week 3/4: Jeff Carter, Seattle Sasquatch (12g 4a 4H) Week 5/6: Patrick Marleau, Seattle Rainiers (4g 11a +10 6TA) *************************************************************************** GOALTENDER OF THE WEEK: Craig Anderson, Vancouver Whitecaps. The Whitecaps have started slowly (relatively) during 2010-11, but you can't blame their netminder, Anderson. Andy stopped 93.9% of shots faced this biweek, including 43 of 53 Goalie Ratings, stopping 32 shots in a big shutout win over conference-leading Houston. Other top goaltenders in Week 5/6 include Marty Turco, Carey Price, and Tim Thomas.
