I will have sporadic e-mail access during this time. Look for the National Strat-o-Matic Hockey League on Facebook! Thanks to Scott Shigemi for setting up a league page. I put the address up in the newsletter header - hopefully we will see some exciting things going forward. Tell your friends! I believe that Week 13/14 featured our highest-volume trade deadline ever - thirty-one trades involving nineteen of the league's twenty-four teams. All in all, 76 players will have a new address beginning with the new biweek. St. Michael's had two players with five-point games; unfortunately for the Commish, Pavel Datsyuk and Martin St. Louis each had their two-goal, three-assist nights against the Rainiers. The Rainiers will be seeing a lot of Datsyuk soon, as he was swapped to the Sasquatch for Bobby Ryan at the deadline. Gulf Shores may be leading the Western Conference, but they proved to be no match for Long Island's Evgeni Nabokov. Nabby recorded a 33-save shutout against the Stingrays on January 13th, including all thirteen Goalie Ratings he faced. Fort Garry's Roberto Luongo had the other amazing performance of the biweek, stopping 34 of 34 shots (11/11 GR) against the Pittsburgh Sound Chasers, Thanks for the articles this week! Some intriguing ones! *************************************************************************** NSHL 2011 DRAFT CENTRAL SCOUTING REPORT by Chris Beddick, Pittsburgh Hornets owner Hey everybody...Hope all is well... Purely in the spirit of fun, and it if sparks some hockey talk, hey, that can't be bad right? LOL. Every year around this time, I put together a list of top players for the upcoming draft. Thought I would share with you all.. Please note, this list is subject to change and probably will. So with that, here we go: 2011 NSHL Draft Central Scouting Top 10 (As of 1/13/11) 1) f Taylor Hall, EDM - Reminds me alot of Patrick Kane. Explosive skater who makes spectacular plays look easy. He has superstar winger written all over him. 2) f Jeff Skinner, CAR - When you can score and not look out of place as an 18 year old, you are a special player. Can play any forward position. Is not afraid of the rough stuff. Has great hockey sense. 3) d Cam Fowler, ANA - There are 3 true, blue chip defensemen that are top 10 worthy, and Fowler currently leads the way. Has good size and great mobility. Have heard comparisons to a young Scott Niedermeyer. For a teenager to excel at the d position in the NHL just cannot be understated. 4) f Jordan Eberle, EDM - Was on a great scoring pace before an ankle injury put him on the shelf. Still worthy of a high pick, as he has great hands, goal scoring instincts, and a nose for the net. Has the potential to be a true sniper from the wing. 5) f Tyler Seguin, BOS - Should blossom into a complete center who makes others around him better. Adding some bulk and gaining experince will lead him to become a big time center long term. 6) d Oliver Ekman-Larsson, PHX - Great instincts, nice size, and is the smooth puck moving d man all teams covet. There will be some growing pains, but this kid has all the tools to be a great at both ends of the ice. 7) c Alexander Burmistrov, ATL - Classic profile as a two way center, consisting of puck creativity, great playmaking, and defensive responsibility. 8) d Kevin Shattenkirk, COL - Has a great shot from the point, which should translate into a PP threat for years. Another great puck mover who doesn't shy away from playing the body. 9) c Derek Stepan, NYR - Excellent playmaker who is also good in his own zone. Rarely gets caught out of position. Future number one center for the blue shirts. 10) g Anders Lindback, NSH - First off, this cat is 6'6, 212 pounds !!! Very little net given up with him. Rinne currently blocks him, but he could the number 1 right now on about 10 other NHL teams. Big time upside here. *************************************************************************** BIG HOPES AND TRADES FOR A STRUGGLING FRANCHISE by Scott Shigemi, Seattle Sasquatch owner Seattle (AP) - The Seattle Sasquatch started the season with hopes, but those hopes were dashed as they opened up with a single in eight games and eight after 24. Penalized time after time, Seattle couldn't find a way to dig themselves out of a growing hole. Have they mailed it in? With the latest trades they've made, it appears so. The retooling began in week 11 when the recent acquisition of Nik Antropov from St. Michael's was shipped away to the Stone Harbor Sound for defenseman Brian Campbell and Steve Begin. Antropov was supposed to stabilize Seattle's second line unit and be the playmaker for the likes of Bobby Ryan. Neither player was able to produce the way the team was hoping for, so the line was broken up in dramatic fashion. The blueline was lacking quality right defensemen, so Campbell will step into a top 4 role. Steve Begin's position is to fill in as a reserve forward. Next to depart the Emerald City was Mathieu Darche. Darche was selected by Seattle in the 2010 waiver draft as the 32nd pick in the second round. Vancouver will now be his home, where it appears he'll have the chance to get his name engraved on the Farley Cup. In return for Darche, Seattle obtains another centerman, Blair Betts. Betts had been with Vancouver since 2006. What he brings to Seattle is playoff experience and grit. A mainstay for the Sasquatch for several years, Alexei Ponikarovsky will find himself playing for the Houston Aeros. The left winger has fallen out of favor with the who has actively shopped him for some time. The move appears to be a salary dump as Houston returns a second round pick for the fairly consistent forward. Two big deals were announced on Sunday. The first was with division rival Nevada Thunder. Going to play in the desert are Marc Savard and Milan Hejduk. Savard has been with the team for the past two years. Injuries might be the cause for his departure. Fan favorite Hejduk will be missed. He has done nothing but be a solid point producer for the team for the past four years. However, Seattle brings in youthful talent. Nathan Horton has tremendous upside as a skilled winger to replace Hejduk. In addition, Nevada gives up a high second round pick. Saving the best for last, the Seattle Sasquatch are pleased to announce that they've obtained one of the league's perennial all-stars in Pavel Datsyuk. The cost was high as the team has to give away one of their cornerstone pieces in Bobby Ryan. Why would a team get ten years older and make such a deal? All isn't lost in terms of youth, Datsyuk also brings St. Michael's first round pick. Seattle is now much stronger up the middle with Datsyuk and Carter. On the wings the team still has Huselius, Neal and now Horton. On the blueline if the players can stay healthy are the likes of Markov, Martin and Campbell. The team has also stockpiled a number of high draft picks for next year. There's still hope that the other Seattle franchise will bring home a Farley Cup; it just won't happen this season. *************************************************************************** COMPLETE MAKE OVER FOR HELLCATS by Rob Ryan, Florida owner The Florida Hellcats have begun a new era. It's the biggest upheaval in the history of their organization. All season long they were hinting to other general managers that veterans were sure to be on the move. Nobody bit. Finally, after standing pat all season long, the Hellcats back office boardrooms were ablaze with ideas. The veteran era was over and the team had to get much younger. The trade deadline was knocking on the door so Brad Marsh and his coaching staff sat down with general manager/owner Rob Ryan and hammered things out and kept the phone lines buzzing. After three days, the dust settled. Gone were forwards Brad Boyes, Matt Stajan, Vinny Prospal and Daymond Langkow. All were traded for draft picks ranging from a late second rounder to three late third rounders. All went to contenders. A couple days later that second round pick from St. Michael's become right wing youngster Teddy Purcell. "We think Purcy is going to become a force for us on right wing and will bring more consistency than Boyes did.", Marsh said. "Plus he's much younger, many years left." Then the defense was addressed. Another third rounder was dealt for Ron Hainsey. Left defenseman Jay McKee was added to the largest deal of the week as an add-on to role forwards Matt D'Agostini and Chuck Kobasew and a fifth rounder. Leaving from Florida in that deal was defensive pillar Rob Scuderi. Another trade was Sami Salo leaving to Long Island for center Tom Pyatt and the Berzerkers 5th round pick in 2011. The rest of the team seems like it might stay intact for a few years. Jaroslav Halak is 25 and the goalie of the future. Lubomir Visnovsky and Christian Ehrhoff are stalwarts on the blueline. Trevor Daley and Johnny Boychuk had drawn the ire of the coaching staff but were spared from being dealt. Rookies forwards Tyler Ennis, Ryan O'Reilly and defenseman Ryan Wilson will be joined by a top pick this upcoming draft as the Hellcats are due to get a top ten pick in a deep draft. A high scoring center is desired. Wingers Chris Kunitz, David Booth, Ryan Clowe, Chad Larose and Blake Wheeler all were young and sturdy enough to stay. Brian Boyle and Dominic Moore will man the top two center spots until a playmaking center gets in there. Florida management has worked out a contract for holdout Anton Babchuk as he has agreed to skate the blueline next season. At the deadline, Florida released Ryan Johnson to pick up RW Jerome Samson. The Hellcats put in claims for Tim Jackman and Matt Halischuk, but were denied. *************************************************************************** RAINIERS BRASS MAKES MOVE TO "WARD" OFF PLAYOFF ABSENCE by Doug Norris, Seattle Rainiers owner The Seattle Rainiers, hindered by uneven goaltending all season long, made their "annual" trade move, picking up netminder Cam Ward from the Buffalo Bulldogs. With Dwayne Roloson going the other way, it's clearly a new era in the Emerald City. "We're very excited to get Cam," said Seattle general manager Doug Norris. "Since we traded [J-S] Giguere several years ago, we've been looking for a young franchise goaltender. Jonathan Bernier is coming along nicely in the minors, and we think that Cam and Jonathan will be an excellent tandem for years to come." Where does that leave Mike Smith, who has kept the Seattle playoff hopes alive while Roloson struggled? "I'm a little frustrated - I have to admit," said Smith. "All I can do is stop pucks, and I'm going to push Cam as hard as I can. It will make us both better." Leaving is 2007 Farley Cup champion Roloson, as well as young power forward Nikolai Kulemin. "You hate to lose these guys, but we've been outshooting teams all year, and if we're going to make a run, we have to do it now," spoke Norris. *************************************************************************** THEY SAID IT: as heard by Brooklyn owner Jeff Tsuruoka "I'm going in for WHO???" -Scott Parse on learning that he'd be taking Alex Ovechkin's roster spot for a game against Manayunk in Week 13/14 *************************************************************************** CALENDAR OF EVENTS: January 26 - Week 15-16, National Strat-o-Matic Hockey League 2010-11 January 28 - all computer managers must be sent to myself, Brian, Junu, and your road opponents February 6 - all results must be sent to NSHLgames, to the commissioner (10pm MST) and vice-commissioner, and to your opponents. *************************************************************************** WEEK THIRTEEN/FOURTEEN RESULTS AND INJURIES: Quebec City Patriotes 2, Brooklyn Fourteenth 5 BRK ALEXANDER OVECHKIN (2 goals, 2 assists, +2, 9 SOG) BRK STEVE DOWNIE (2 goals, 1 assist, +2) BRK DAVID KREJCI (2 assists, +2) INJURY: BRK BRENDAN MORRISON (1 gm) St. Michael's Privateers 0, Brooklyn Fourteenth 4 BRK PETER BUDAJ (33/33 shots, ShO, 5/5 GR) BRK ALEXANDER OVECHKIN (2 goals, +2, 6 SOG, 1 TA, 2 hits) STM TIM THOMAS (35/39 shots, 10/11 GR) INJURY: BRK MATT BRADLEY (0 gm) Pittsburgh Sound Chasers 3, Brooklyn Fourteenth 2 PIT R.J. It's been a long and winding road to respectability for the Stingrays, but now Gulf Shores stands atop the Western Conference with 76 points. And their catalyst has been Backstrom, who paced the team in Week 13/14, with nine goals and fifteen points. Backstrom was never a minus player in eight games, accumulating a plus-eight. Montreal's Jonathan Toews, Zach Parise of North Calgary, and Martin St. Louis of St. Michael's round out a solid cast of top Week 13/14 performers. Week 1/2: Steven Stamkos, North Calgary (10g 3a 5TA 48SOG) Week 3/4: Jeff Carter, Seattle Sasquatch (12g 4a 4H) Week 5/6: Patrick Marleau, Seattle Rainiers (4g 11a +10 6TA) Week 7/8: Marian Gaborik, Stone Harbor (10g 7a +5) Week 9/10: Sidney Crosby, Vancouver (4g 10a +6 4TA 6H 67% faceoffs) Week 11/12: Sidney Crosby, Vancouver (11g 7a +7 5TA 4H) Week 13/14: Nicklas Backstrom, Gulf Shores (9g 5a +9 4TA 3H) *************************************************************************** GOALTENDER OF THE WEEK: Jimmy Howard, Minneapolis. In six games for the Massasauga, Howard was spectacular, allowing just six goals in six games (0.99 GAA). Probably the best goaltender biweek of the season so far, Howard stopped 96.4% of shots, including an amazing 34 of 36 Goalie Ratings. Howard had shutouts of Vancouver and the Seattle Sasquatch, and a non-shutout against North Calgary where he stopped 10 of 10 Goalie Ratings. Other top netminders in Week 13/14 include Stone Harbor's Ilya Bryzgalov, Craig Anderson of the Vancouver Whitecaps, and Pittsburgh's Henrik Lundqvist.
